Mary was born during 1790 at Quethiock, Cornwall the daughter of
Samuel and Mary nee Souther
and the granddaughter of
Peter and Joan nee Sharp.
In the Baptismal record her surname was spelt Trese.
As yet nothing more is known about her until 1813, when aged 22, she was married in Quethiock Church to John Wood.
(She was married as Mary Treays and the marriage was witnessed by Samuel Treays and Peter Treays, probably her next elder and younger brothers.)
John was also born in Quethiock and appears to have been about a year younger than Mary.
In later life, from the time of the 1851 Census, John’s occupation was recorded as Timber Dealer.
John and Mary had at least four children, two sons and two daughters. It is possible that there may also have been other children who have not been identified so far.
John and Mary were still living in Quethiock about 1815 when their son Thomas was born but about 7 years later when their
daughter Elizabeth was born, they had moved to Tideford in St Germans parish, Cornwall.
Sometime after that and before the early 1830s
when their son John was born they had moved to East Stonehouse, Plymouth, Devon where they finally settled. In 1841 they were living at Providence Place
Plymouth with their children Mary, aged 20, Elizabeth, aged 15, and John, aged 9 where they remained until after the 1851 census. By 1861
they had moved to 62 Fore Street. John died in East Stonehouse during 1870 age 78. During 1871, after John’s death, Mary was recorded as living at 63 Fore
Street.
The business appears to have been carried on by Mary, recorded in 1871, age 80,
Timber Merchant. Mary died during 1879 in East Stonehouse, age 88.
- son Thomas Wood was born sometime during 1814/5 in Quethiock, Cornwall. Probably by the early 1830s he had moved with his
parents to East Stonehouse, Plymouth, Devon and about a decade later, when he would have been in his mid-20s he married Eliza? who
had been born in Plymouth, Devon. During 1841 he was living at Providence Place East Stonehouse with his wife, and children Charles aged 5
Emma aged 2 and Thomas aged 6 months. During 1851 Thomas and his family were living at 11 Providence Row whereas his parents John and Mary
were living at 2 Providence Place. During 1861 they were living at the same address as his parents but as a separate household.
His occupation was ‘Timber Dealer’, the same as his father and at a later date following the deaths of his father and mother he appears to
have taken over the business. Thomas and Eliza had at least seven children, 5 sons and two daughters during the next two decades, namely:-
- Son Charles born 1836/7 and recorded on the 1851 census as born East Stonehouse aged 14 and living with parents

- daughter Clara Wood born 1855/6 in East Stonehouse, Devon. In 1881 Census unmarried living with parents. Later that year Clara married
George Frederick Penwarn a nurseryman in Plymouth who had been born in Lezant Cornwall about 1855 (Marriage Plymouth 1881 Q4 vol 5b p551).
His parents appear to have been Richard Penwarn, also a nurseryman, who had been born in Tamerton Foliott Devon around 1828 and Sarah born
in Slapton, Devon around 1820. At the time of the 1891 census George, his wife and three children, George aged 8, Ethel aged 6, and William
aged 2 months were living at 76 Belgrave Rd., Charles, Plymouth next door to George’s parents and his unmarried sister Ann aged 36. In the
1901 census George (transcribed Penvarn) appears at 14 Belgrave Rd with his wife and children George aged 18 (by then a solicitor’s clerk),
William aged 10, and another daughter Eliza.

family had moved to 6 Brook Down Terrace, St Stephen, Saltash, St. Germans, and John had become an Accountant.
- Daughter Mary Wood born about 1820/21. She is recorded as living with her parents at the time of the 1841 census but apart from that

- daughter Elizabeth Wood was born sometime during 1821/2 at Tideford, St Germans, Cornwall. During 1842 a marriage of Elizabeth
Wood is recorded in the Stoke Damerel, Devon Registration District but at present the identity of her husband is unknown. During the period
1851 to 1871 she is recorded as Elizabeth McEwen living with her parents and her son George but not her husband.
[The marriage of a George McEwen is recorded during 1844 in Plymouth, Devon.] In 1881 census she is recorded as ‘Widow’ living alone.
- son George McEwen was born sometime 1845/6 in East Stonehouse, Devon. He became an ‘Engineer’ in the Royal Navy and in 1881 was aboard ‘HMS Dryad’
- son John Wood was born sometime during 1832/3 in East Stonehouse, Devon. His occupation was as a ‘Joiner H.M. Service’ and in
the 1881 Census he was recorded as living at 117 North Road, Plymouth St Andrews, Devon. In about 1852 when he was about 20 years old he married
Elizabeth A Edwards. John and Elizabeth had at least two children, a son and a daughter. As they were born about 10 years apart it appears possible that there were other children as yet unidentified.
- daughter Emma J Wood was born sometime during 1854/5. No further information obtained so far after 1861 Census when she was recorded as
‘Scholar’.
- son John F Wood was born sometime during 1864/5 in East Stonehouse, Devon. At the time of the 1881 Census he was recorded as a
