Eliza Jane was, according to the 1871 Census return, born in Bromley, Kent sometime during the year 1856/7 the daughter of Peter and Catherine nee Buchan, and granddaughter of Peter and Margaret nee Olver.

During 1878 when she was about 21 years old she was married on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent where the family had lived from about 1857/8 onwards. Her husband was Robert Evans who appears to have been a Shipwright, later becoming a ‘Recorder of Works’. Robert was born at Sheerness on the Isle of Sheppey and was about two years older than Eliza.

After their marriage they lived in Minster on the Isle of Sheppey. Three children of their marriage have been traced, two sons and a daughter, but there was a gap of more than a decade between two of the births. Sadly Robert died young during 1897 at only 42 years old leaving Eliza a widow: in the 1901 Census Eliza is recorded as a Dressmaker and living with her was widowed mother Catherine.

No further details of Eliza’s life have yet been sought or obtained.

• Daughter Eliza J Evans was, according to the Census returns, born sometime during 1879/80 in Sheerness/Minster in the Isle of Sheppey, Kent. The 1891 Census return records that she was ‘Blind in one eye from Childhood’. She was not recorded as living with her widowed mother in the 1901 Census return.
  
  
• Son Robert? W Evans was, according to the Census returns, born sometime during 1881/2 in Sheerness/Minster in the Isle of Sheppey, Kent. At the time of the 1901 Census he was an Apprentice Joiner in the Dockyard, unmarried, living at home with his widowed mother.
  
  
• Son George Evans was, according to the 1901 Census return, born sometime during the year 1894/5 in Sheerness/Minster in the Isle of Sheppey, Kent. At that time he too was living with his widowed mother.
