Photograph of "Fairholme", 10 Malvern Road, Acocks Green taken about 1900

Letter from William

This is a copy of a photograph which was in the possession of the late Marjorie Mitchell. The original was a sepia photograph measuring 4.25" x 6" and mounted on a plain beige card measuring 9.25" x 6.75" with no marking or identification.

The house matches that currently (2013) at No 10 Malvern Road, Acocks Green which is next door but one to the pair of semis once owned by William Trease.

In 1901 Annie & Fred Whitehouse lived at "Fairholme", Malvern Road, which was, like No. 10 now is, next door but one to William's semis. It is therefore concluded that the house shown is "Fairholme", now 10 Malvern Road. The house name on the gate in the photograph was illegible on this copy (and the original) but probably should read "Fairholme".

In 1902, Fred changed his job and moved to Alcester, so the photograph was almost certainly taken before then. Fred and Annie probably owned the house as they were unlikely to photograph one they didn't. The fact that it appears be one of the first houses of that period to be built in Malvern Road poses some questions. Were Annie and Fred already established in Acocks Green before William Trease decided to retire there? Were Annie and Fred the first occupants of the house?

At the bottom left just above the fence and behind the house appears what looks like scaffolding and perhaps a house being erected behind "Fairholme" in a road to the North of Malvern Road.
