Page from William's handwriting exercise book dated 1846

Schoolbook page - sloth

This is the front page of a schoolbook in the possession of the late Marjorie Mitchell. It reads :-

Progressive Specimens
of
Penmanship
Written by
Mast: W: Trease
at
Mr. Dunwell's
Academy
From Xmas to Mids 1847

Much of the page is pre-printed. Only the words printed in bold above have been inserted.

It seems that William Dunwell's commercial and mathematical academy at Burton on Trent flourished from the early 1840s until the late 1880s. Bagshaw's 1846 Trade Directory has an entry "Dunwell Wm. Academy (commercial boarding and day) High St Burton-upon-Trent".

White's Derbyshire 1857 Directory gives the same location for the school and also states that it takes boarders.
