1895 - Edward and Clement Freeland

Edward and brother Clement

This is an unmarked 3.25"x2" sepia photograph on a dark green mount with a gold edge.

It is of Edward and Clement Freeland. Clem is standing at the back with his face directly facing the camera and Edward is sitting in the foreground with his face looking to the right of him. It is thought to have been taken about 1901 when Clem was aged about 7 and Claude was aged about 11.

When Edward was a small boy he had decided to chop some wood on a concrete floor and a chip of concrete flew into his right eye and he lost the sight in it. It must have caused his parents dreadful consternation. As a result Edward, was deliberately seated at an angle to the camera rather than have his face directly facing the camera and showing his right eye. All photos taken of him subsequently show the left hand side of his face only.
