RESEARCH - WILLIAM and ANN TRAYS nee CLEAVE (Tree 2 of 4)

This page has been created to assist this web forum. Please post any comments you may have to the forum.

The page is the second tree of a set of 4 trees. It excludes references to living persons and includes descendants up to the name change,
where known. For example, it is intended that it should include details of the husband and children of a TRAYS daughter but not their
grandchildren (although such information may be included in summary form, where known).

The source information is grouped by family and the document from which it is derived is appended in italics but PLEASE NOTE: -
1. Different interpretations of the information could place the person to whom it refers in another family.
2. The information shown may be inaccurate:-
   - It may have been transcribed incorrectly.
   - The information on the source document itself may simply be wrong.

Family of John and Jane TRAYS nee ROWE John Trays was the son of William and Ann. The following poignant recollection of his family, possibly referring to him or more possibly to his son John is recorded:- 'There was a family of TRAYS living at Rashford Gate in the centre of East Moors in this parish. Mr Trays had a small-holding under the Rodds of Trebartha Hall. Mr Trays was a great bell-ringer and regularly came in twice a Sunday to ring. This would be 50 to 60 years ago. Now alas Trebartha Hall and the house at Rashford Gate are no more.' (letter from Rev. Family of William John and Fanny/Annie MASTERS nee TRAYS Fanny Trays is the daughter of John and Jane. She almost certainly married William John Masters who emigrated with his family to Canada but a record of the marriage has not yet been found. His wife's death registration in Canada completed by William Masters in 1929 shows his wife as Annie Masters born on 19th February 1861 the daughter of John Trays. In 1888 the birth of their daughter was registered as Jane Trays Masters and this is taken to corroborate that the wife's maiden name was Trays. However no appropriate MASTERS/TRAYS (or TRAYS name variant) marriage registration can be found nor can an appropriate birth registration for an Annie TRAYS in 1861. Without a definitive marriage certificate it is impossible to state with absolute certainty who William Masters' wife really is. However it appears that she is this Fanny TRAYS. The reasoning goes as follows:-
  1. Although Fanny's name is given as Annie at the time of her death, she is recorded as Fanny in both the 1891 and the 1901 census returns. If only one census return showed 'Fanny' it could be simply an error for Annie but as both census returns show 'Fanny' it seems more likely that the person recorded was also known as 'Fanny'. On both the 1911 census return and 1913 passenger list William's wife is called Annie. It may be that some time after 1901, as her family grew up, the name Fanny was dropped completely.
  2. The birth year given by William appears incorrect but the day and month tally. It is thought unlikely that he would get his wife's birthday wrong but he may have got the year of birth wrong if he was working from memory. He was born in the 3rd Quarter of 1862, and if his wife was Fanny born in 1st Quarter of 1862, she would be a year older for much of the time and he may have thought, as she was a year older than him, she was born 1861 - or he may have simply got the year wrong.
  3. Fanny's father was called John - tallies with the death registration.
  4. Fanny's mother was called Jane Trays - tallies with name given to first daughter - often the wife's mother's forename is used.
  5. The place of birth given on the 1901 census correctly states Launceston - the Registration District for Altarnun where Fanny Trays was born.
  6. The place of birth given on the 1891 census gives Liskeard - the Registration District for St Cleer where William was born. The parish of st Cleer is next to the parish of Altarnun so Fanny/Annie may have assumed that Altarnun was in the same Registration district.
