FAMILY of JOHN and PHILLIPPA TREIS nee BARNARD

John TREIS married Phillippa BARNARD in Stoke Climsland in January 1683 and appears to have had three surviving sons.

His son Thomas is thought to have gone to live in the Camelford area following the death of his first wife. A younger son, John, is thought to have followed his older brother Thomas to the same area a few years later.

Another son, Arthur, is the only Trease found so far whose wife shared the same surname. This is an uncommon surname and it seems almost certain that her father, Joseph Treise of Milton Abbot is related in some way to Arthur's father John. Marriage of first cousins was not illegal then nor indeed now so the relationship could even be as close as brother. Mary's family can be traced with some degree of certainty back to her paternal grandparents, Robert and Joan nee Ham, but the family connection seems further back than this. The christian name Robert is uncommon in the Treise family and it seems likely that Robert Treise of Milton Abbot is related to the other Robert Treises appearing in Launceston from 1575 - 1645.

John's ancestry is currently not known but the Treise family of Stoke Climsland appears to date back to the 14th Century and it is thought he may be one of Stoke Climsland family. The christian names, he chose for his children, of Thomas and Arthur are rarely used in the Trease family and probably offer the best clues to his ancestry.

The only surviving entry that we can find for a Thomas Trease in the area is :-

1664	c. Stoke Climsland. 14Feb1664	Hannah TRIYES d/o Mr Thomas & Mrs Marie (COD)
The naming of John's first son, Thomas, would be compatible with him being an older child of Mr Thomas TRIYES of Stoke Climsland. The naming of his third son Arthur would be compatible with his grandfather being an Arthur Trease and his being related to the family of
Arthur TREIS & Elizabeth Pollmer, but further research needs to be carried out on this.

Family of MARY TREISE and EDWARD CRUETT of MENHENIOT Mary Treise is the daughter of Joseph and Charity Treise. Although the record of her marriage to Edward Cruet has yet to be found, there are two other compelling pieces of evidence to support this marriage:- 1. Mary Cruet, daughter, is given as the informant on Joseph Treise's death certificate of 11th August 1837. 2. Mary Cruet, wife of Edward Cruet, is recorded in the 1851 census return as having been born in Quethioc in 1800 and this exactly matches her birth details. TENTATIVE FAMILY TREE OF TREASE FAMILY OF MILTON ABBOT

Arthur Traise and Mary Trease, whom he married on the 10th November 1720 in Milton Abbot, are thought to be related. Mary was the daughter of Joseph Trease of Milton Abbot and her family can be traced back using the Milton Abbot registers which start in 1653/4.

The Milton Abbot Protestation Return of 1640/41 records no Treises. The first Trease entry found in the Milton Abbot registers relates to the banns preceding the marriage of Mary Traise's grandfather, Robert Trease to Joan Ham in July 1658. It seems fairly certain that Robert's family came from elsewhere and this is explored in a section covering the ancestry of Robert TREASE of Milton Abbot.

The last Trease entry found in these registers is the burial of Elizabeth TRAISE on 11Oct1771. After she died, her husband Robert moved to nearby Tavistock parish where he himself died in 1777. About the time of his death, his son Robert junior and his wife, Hannah, who had christened two of their children in Tavistock, moved to Calstock parish, where baptismal records of five more of their children are found.

Currently we do not know whether the family died out in the male line. For four Treise sons we have so far only traced their baptismal records, the last being of Robert Traise in Calstock in 1784.

Prior to 1653 the only reference found so far linking the name Treise to Milton Abbot is : -

The name Robert is unusual for Treise families of the period. The following baptisms have been found so far: -

Launceston, Stoke Climsland, and Tavistock are all about 5 to 6 miles from Milton Abbot. The most references to Robert appear in Launceston and using the very patchy records, efforts have been made to assemble parts of a Launceston Trease family tree. However there are many problems with it due to the limited information. The 1633 baptism of Robert son of Robert and Joan gives an appropriate age for Robert's 1658 marriage in Milton Abbot but there is no other supporting evidence. If this was our Robert then his father died during the Civil War when Robert was about ten years old and his mother Joan died in 1660 in Milton Abbot. Early Trease research records a Robert Treas and wife in St Stephens by Launceston parish in 1660, which is the same parish in which Robert's mother died in March 1660/61.

Family of ROBERT and JOANNE TREASE nee HAM

We know that Robert was a resident of Milton Abbot, and not a sojourner, when he married and that he was a shoemaker. So far we have not traced Robert's baptism. Robert most certainly was born before 1641 but his father does not appear in the 1641 Protestation Return for Milton Abbot nor indeed does any other TREASE. It is therefore thought that he was born elsewhere. A 1633 baptism in St Stephens by Launceston gives an appropriate age for his marriage in 1658 but there are several other Robert TREASEs around and so far no supporting evidence to support this proposal.

Tristram Trease, labourer, buried in Milton Abbot on 7th January 1694, is possibly related but we have no other record of him anywhere. Tristram died 6 years after Robert so may have been a similar age to Robert. He may even have been his brother.

Family of JOSEPH and REBECCA TRAYS nee KELLAND

Joseph is the son of Robert and Joanne Trays nee Ham. The widow Rebecca who was buried on 01Jul1743 is thought to be his wife. If so, he must have died sometime before then and the 1722 burial of Joseph appears probable. This burial does not state he is Joseph the elder and may imply that his son Joseph had already died or no longer lived in the area.

			RETURN TO FAMILY TREE

Family of ROBERT and WILMOT TREISE nee GENDLE

This Robert is most probably the son of Robert and Joanne Trays nee Ham.

In 1696 he married Wilmot GENDLE in the neighbouring parish of Dunterton. Around the same time the marriages of three other GENDLEs are recorded in Dunterton and it is thought they may be her sisters, in which case she would be the daughter of John and Honour GENDLE, but so far her baptism has not been found.

			RETURN TO FAMILY TREE

Family of ROBERT & HENRIETTA nee HILL, & ELIZABETH nee TOOKER

Robert is the son of Robert and Wilmot Treise nee GENDLE and grandson of Robert and Joanne Trays nee Ham. The father of Robert's second wife is a Mr Tooker - the Mr. implying a slightly higher social status and wealth than the norm.

The death of Robert's wife, Elizabeth, in 1771 is the last recorded Trease event in Milton Abbot. It is thought that sometime after Elizabeth's death, Robert moved to the Tavistock area where he died in 1777 and was buried In St Eustachius Church. A Robert TREISE, believed to be their son, was also living at that time in the Tavistock area with his wife Hannah.

In 1774 the Will of a Sarah TREIS of Tavistock was proved. She is thought to be Sarah, the daughter of Charles TRIES & Elizabeth DEACON of Stoke Climsland, who was buried in Stoke Climsland on 30th November 1773. The Will appears to have not survived the Exeter Blitz. Sarah may have been related to Robert in some way.

				RETURN TO FAMILY TREE

Family of ROBERT and HANNAH TREISE nee ?

Robert appears to be the son of Robert and Elizabeth Treise nee Tooker. His age at death is a good match, and there is supporting information : -

After his father died in 1777, Robert moved with his wife to nearby Calstock, while his brother John, who appears to have remained unmarried, stayed in Tavistock.

Robert appears to have died in Calstock in March 1818 aged 73 and his wife Ann died just over a month later. Robert and Hannah's three oldest children all died young. So far no further records have not been found of the four younger children. The death of the youngest, Ann, may have been located but original records need to be examined.
