Treys families of Stoke Climsland

Treys families are recorded at Stoke Climsland for around 400 years from the late 14th century through to about 1770 and their presence in the area seems continuous throughout this period. We can produce a tentative tree of the family from Sampson Trease who married in 1567 through to Charles Treise who married in 1751 and before that we have a record of William Treys of Downhouse about 1350 - 1400 followed nearly 250 years later by the marriage of William Trees of Downhouse in 1611.

The early Trease references found so far are insufficient to produce a family tree. The later tree of Sampson Trease was very speculative when first produced but recent information finds have confirmed some of the original speculation. Although Stoke Climsland baptism and burial records exist for the period following his marriage, they were in too bad a condition for transcripts to be made so the tree was originally constructed from the limited information in Wills and marriage transcripts. The current haul of Trease references is shown here. The tree will be changed as further information comes to light but for the time being you should note that different interpretations of the information could place the person to whom it refers in another family and the information shown may be inaccurate e.g. it may have been transcribed incorrectly or the source document itself may simply be wrong.

New information will be added to these pages from time to time and a record of changes made will be recorded in the Change History.

Dates and abbreviations are explained in Codes & Conventions.

TO INTRODUCTION     TO TREE

TENTATIVE TREE OF ONE OF THE STOKE CLIMSLAND TREASE FAMILIES

This tree is mainly constructed from Wills and Marriage Register transcripts. Although earlier baptism and burial records exist for Stoke Climsland no baptism transcripts prior to 1675 (IGI) have been found. This tree has and is being revised and corrected as more data is recovered from the Parish Registers which are in poor condition, many pages being illegible but perhaps capable of being reconstructed one day with the help of intelligent computer OCR software. Key areas of contention are: -
1. The ... Treise and Alice Whetley who married in 1555 may not be the same John and Alice Treise whose Wills were proved in 1612 and 1618.
2. Although we know that John Treise whose will was proved in 1612 had a brother Sampson, with a son Sampson and a grandson Sampson, we do not know for sure that this brother Sampson was the Sampson who married the widow Elizabeth Trehane at South Hill in 1567.
3. No marriage record has been found for the Sampson who is shown as the son of Sampson and Julian Roberts who married in 1625. The reasoning that his wife was called Rebecca, whilst originally speculative, is now supported by subsequently finding the baptismal records of Sampson, Joan, and Ann, children of Sampson & Rebecka in the Parish Register.

Professor G.E. Trease: a transcript of which is shown below)
NOTE: 250 years later William Trees of Downehouse married Wilmot Symons. Same name - same location.

'However, I can be of help with regards to the Trease family in Stoke Climsland, which I am certain can be traced back on this manor a further two hundred years. According to my files, in the later fourteenth century a John Treys held a messuage and twenty-eight acres in Kenston, and a William Treys held a messuage and thirty-two acres in in Donnhouse (sometimes called Boradon). Both appear to have been unfree conventionaries or villeins. You will appreciate my notes do not lend themselves to absolutely precise information on all tenants (there were well over a thousand tenants on the Duchy manors, holdings often changed hands more than once every seven years, and I have studied a two hundred year period), however you should certainly be able to find the Treys mentioned above in the assession rolls of the later fourteenth century; most of which are available in the Duchy of Corwall office. You should try D.C.O. Rolls 473 onwards. There is no trace of Treys in Climsland on the Caption of Seisin of 1337.' See also the property analysis.

FAMILY OF SAMPSON TREASE and ELIZABETH TREHANE

This Sampson may be the father of Sampson and Edward. His employer, Sampson Mannington (Manaton), appears to have been a major landholder in the parish. Descendants of his employer appear to have married into the Carew family of Antony who employed his descendant John Treis in the 17th century. It seems possible that other descendants/relatives between Sampson and John may have been similarly employed.
Some time before 1567, his wife had been married to Edward TREHANE who had died. An Edward TREHAYN (with goods value £1 appears in the 1544 South Hill lay subsidy). Also a Stephen Trehayn and a William TR?????. Six years after her marriage to Sampson a Mary Trehane daughter of Edward dec'd got married in South Hill. This child may be hers in which case she may have been married to Edward for quite some time or it may be a daughter from an earlier marriage of her husband. The former situation could have an implication on the age of Sampson and reduce the possibility of him still being alive when John Treise died in 1612.

Family of JOHN and ALICE TREISE of STOKE CLIMSLAND

A marriage of ...? TRAYES and Alse WHETLY is recorded at Stoke Climsland in 1555. It is possible that this refers to this John who has a wife called Alice. Assuming they married in their early twenties this would have made John around 80 and Alice around 85 when they died.
From John's will drawn up in May 1611, it is apparent that John has a brother Sampson who was then still alive and that there were two other Sampsons - Sampson Junior and his son. Sampson Junior fits the Sampson who married Jane Allin in 1589 and who had in 1611 an unmarrried son Sampson who went on to marry Julian Roberts in 1625. The Edward Treis of Linkinhorne also mentioned in the Will must be related but the Will does not state the relationship.

No children are directly mentioned in either John's will of 1611 nor his wife's will of 1618 and it is thought they had no surviving children. Alice makes many bequests to both the individually named children of Mary Geedy (including Jane Cutty who is already married and Thomas Geedy who is old enough to be made executor of her Will) and to the individually named children of Thomas Dingle. These children must have been very close to her and their age indicates that their parents must have married 20 + years previously. It seems likely that they were Alice's relatives rather than her husband's and possibly nephews or nieces :-
1. Mary Geedy may be a niece whose husband had died by 1614.
2. Another niece who had died by 1614, had married Thomas Dingle.
3. These nieces had been born long enough ago for two of their children, Jane Cutty and Jane Bound to reach marriageable age and at least one of the children to be old enough to be appointed executor.
4. The two nieces are likely to have been born at least 40 years before 1614 ie before 1574.

The inventory for John's will was done by Sampson Mannington which suggests a link with Sampson Trease who was servant to Sampson Mannington.

When John draws up his Will on the 26th May 1611, he states that he lives at Pitt Farm in Stoke Climsland. 30 years later, on the 9th October 1641, the burial of Sampson TREES of Pitt is recorded at Stoke Climsland. The Sampson who is buried is thought to be one of the three Sampsons mentioned in the Will. If John is the TRAYES who married Alice in 1555 then the Sampson who died is thought unlikely to be his brother on the grounds of age.

Family of SAMPSON and ?JANE TREASE nee ?

This Sampson seems to be Sampson the Elder mentioned in the will of daughter Frances Trease made in 1634 whose will tells us :-
1. Her father was Sampson Trease the elder.
2. She had a brother Sampson Trease who had sons Sampson and William.
3. She had another brother.
4. She had a sister Elizabeth.
5. She had an illegitimate son Andrew.
We also know from the will of Uncle Edward Trease of Linkinhorne made in 1644 that he had a nephew Sampson who was alive in 1644 who had a son Sampson and a second son William - this matches the description of Frances's brother Sampson.
The references to a will by this Sampson proved on 3rd April 1635 are from notes of earlier research that can no longer be found. The Will is not listed by CRO and it is thought that the reference is actually a misindexed reference to the Will of his daughter Frances. However the references are being retained until this discrepancy can be resolved.
It is thought more likely that Sampson died in January 1643/4 and that his death prompted son Sampson and Uncle Edward to see to their Wills which were both drafted at the beginning of February 1644. Sampson should have had a Will but if he did, it no longer appears to exist. It is of course possible that there was no Will and his property was handled by means of Administration Bond copies of which have also been lost. The recent find of a burial of Sampson TREES of Treovis in 1641 may possibly be of this Sampson.
The Duchy of Cornwall survey shows Bartholomew TREES at Trealbis aka Treoris which may be the same farm but by 1660 Bartholomew appears to have moved to Hampt farm.

Family of SAMPSON and JULIAN ROBERTS

"Nephew" Sampson is mentioned in Uncle Edward's will which, like Sampson's will, was drawn up in February 1644 and appears to refer to this Sampson to whom Edward bequeathes the residue of his estate but should he die, then his son Sampson should take his place but if his son Sampson were also to die then his second son William should take his place.
Edward appoints another nephew John Treise, as one of the overseers of the Will.
Although Sampson had three sons, one of them, John, did not marry and another, William had three daughters, leaving only one son, Sampson, to continue the family name.

Family of SAMPSON and REBECCA ---

Sampson is the son of Sampson and Julian nee Roberts and is referred to in his brother John's will.
When this tree was first constructed his baptism, marriage, and burial records had not been found neither had the baptismal records of any of his children, but his family could be deduced from other records. Parish register entries subsequently found have so far confirmed the original deductions to be correct.

bef1696	He died before his brother John made his will on 25August 1696.

Sp. Rebecca ---?
Although Sampson's marriage has, so far, not been found, the following circumstantial evidence indicates his wife was called Rebecca: -
1. Brother John refers in his Will to his "sister-in-law Rebecca".
2. The Stoke Climsland parish register contains the baptisms of the children of Sampson and Rebecca TREISE.
3. One of Sampson's daughters appears to be the Rebecca Treise who married Thomas Keene in 1680.
4. Also following entry fits with the premise that his widow Rebecca was alive in 1696 : -

Family of Edward TREISE and Thomazin

Edward is almost certainly the Edward Treis of Linkinhorne mentioned in John Treis's will of 1612 and the uncle of Sampson who married Julian Roberts. The inventories for both Sampson's and Edward's wills were done on the same day by John Deacon and Edward Couch. Also both their wills were drawn up within days of each other.
From Edward's will, the following can be surmised:-
1. He had a nephew Sampson who had an older son Sampson and a younger son William all of whom were alive on 6th February 1644/45.
2. He had another nephew John who is almost certainly the 'brother' John referred to in Sampson's will
3. He probably had no surviving children nor wife as they are not mentioned in his will.
This is compatible with him being the Edward who married THOMASINE in Linkinhorne in 1608 and his wife being the Thomasine, wife of Edward, who was buried in Linkinhorne in 1636.
In her will of 1634, Frances Treise mentions her brother Sampson and his two sons Sampson and William - the profile of her brother Sampson matches that of Edward's nephew Sampson described in his will above.
It therefore seems probable that Edward was brother to Frances's father Sampson and that the Andrew Treise he mentions in his will is Frances's illegitimate son Andrew.
Edward's wife Thomazin died only 28 years after they married and Edward himself died 10 years later. A possible reason for there being no surviving children is that Edward and Thomazin married late in life.

FAMILY of WILLIAM TREIS and WILLMOTH SIMONES of STOKE CLIMSLAND

In 1639 Dorothy is buried and is described as daughter of her mother Wilmot. It is thought likely that Wilmot was the wife of William and this indicates that Dorothy's father, William, had predeceased her. However there remains the possibility that the mother referred to is a different Wilmot.

RETURN TO TREASE REFERERENCES

FAMILY of Arthur TREIS and Elizabeth POLLMER

In 1691 John and Philippa Treise of Stoke Climsland christened one of their sons "Arthur". Descendants of this son are the only Treases known to use the christian name Arthur as an ancestral name. Prior to that, only four references to an Arthur Treis, (including all known alternative spellings), have been found : -

It is surmised that the 1609 and 1612 marriages and the subsequent christenings possibly relate to the same Arthur who lived in Stoke Climsand and moved to Launceston after his second marriage, possibly around 1615. The two brothers referenced in the 1689 Bond were sons or grandsons of this Arthur (it is unlikely to relate to Arthur himself as he married 77 years earlier and would have close to 100 years old).

The John Treise who married Philippa in Stoke Climsland in 1683 and named a son Arthur in 1691 was the son of the John Treise referenced in 1689 Bond.

The inability to trace records of any children from the first marriage or the death of a first wife are compatible with them living in Stoke Climsland as there are no reliable or complete transcripts of the Stoke Climsland parish registers for the period concerned. The original registers have been inspected but are so badly damaged as to be almost completely illegible in many parts. The availability of BTs for the period is unknown.

1689	03Jul1689 Administration of Arthur TREISE of Stoke Climsland
As administration was granted to Arthur's brother, it appears that he did not have a surviving wife nor children. It may be that
he never married. Certainly no marriage record at Stoke Climsland has been found in the transcripts for this period.
The relationship of Arthur to the other surety for the bond, Christopher Taprell of St Neot, is unknown.
Sometimes the lack of a Will indicates an unexpected or early death.

	John TREISE
?We know that the Arthur who died in 1689 had a brother, John.
As surmised above, this John may possibly be the
John Treise of Stoke Climsland who christens one of his sons "Arthur".

FAMILY of John TREISE and ?

This John is the son of Sampson and Julian Treise nee Roberts who married in Stoke Climsland on the 24th October 1625. He is thought to be the brother, whose name is not completely readable, mentioned in his sister Frances's Will made in 1634. and the brother John who had a son John mentioned in his brother Sampson's Will made in 1644.
He also appears as the nephew John mentioned in his uncle Edward's Will made in 1644. His father Sampson married in 1589 and as John was the youngest surviving son he was possibly born after 1595. To have a son who was in his majority when Uncle Edward made his will in 1644, John would need to have married by about 1620. Two John Treases are listed on the 1641 Protestation return for Stoke Climsland. These may relate to this John Trease and his son John.

Susanna can't be Thomas Phillips' widow as both he and his wife are mentioned in the 1695 marriage settlement (see below).
She can't be his daughter Susannah as she marries Nicholas Rowland (see 1700 Will details below).
Edmund Phillips' Will of 1696 (CRO AP/P/1992) might throw some light on the matter.

FAMILY of CHARLES and ELIZABETH TRIES nee DEACON and FORTUNE TRIES nee COLLING

Charles may be the son of Sampson and Elizabeth TREISE nee Smith. Unlike the Charles who marries Mary Haye in Callington in 1734, he uses Rebecca as a daughter's name.
It seems probable that the 1750 burial of Elizabeth at Stoke Climsland is that of Charles's first wife and that the marriage of Charles and Fortune in 1751 is Charles's second marriage.

William is the son of Sampson and Julian nee Roberts. In his will of 1708, he makes bequests to three daughters but no sons and so the family name dies out in this branch. William fits the description "my brother William and his three daughters" in the will of John Treise.

One of them may relate to the John who married Flower Maister in Stoke Climsland in 1642 and who brought up his family in Callington parish. No TREASES are recorded in the Callington Protestation return of 1641 so he possibly moved from Stoke Cimsland to Callington parish after the marriage.

The other John is almost certainly this one. The March 1650 the burial of Honor TREES the daughter of Honor, widow, indicates that this John had died by then. We also know that Honour herself died in 1653. Currently we don't know if there were surviving children. You would expect them to call one son John and one daughter Honour. A Dorothy TREES baptised her illegitimate child Honour in 1678 - it is possible that Dorothy may have been a surviving daughter from this marriage but it looks as though she herself may have been the Dorothy who died in April 1696.

RETURN TO TREASE REFERNCES

Family of WILLIAM and JANE TREISE nee WHALE

The identity of this William is unknown. There is only one William listed on the 1641 protestation return and one on the 1660 Poll tax return. The William of Downehouse who married in 1611 could have remarried and be the same person appearing in all the subsequent references or he may have died and all the references relate to a different William or this William only married here but lived elsewhere.

The William who died in 1672 and the Jane who died in 1683 may be references to this couple.

More data is needed to reduce the number of possibilities.
