NOTE1
Those parts of the left hand side of the document which are missing are shown enclosed in angle '[ ]' brackets and the words and letters
shown in such brackets have been deduced by the context and do not appear on the document.
Words and letters shown in curved brackets '( ?)' are where the transcriber is uncertain of the details.
The words (NOTEn) identify a reference to a transcriber note where the symbol 'n' indicates the note number
NOTE2
A small fragment of the document is missing here sufficient for three letters only. Parts of the very first letter can
be seen both above and below the gap and are consistent with the letter 'J'. Parts of the third letter can also be seen
above the gap and possibly a tiny part below that touches the final flourish of the 'e' on the line below. The fourth
letter can be clearly seen past the gap and is an 'n' but part of a loop in front could make it an 'm'. The above is
consistent with the word being 'John' but it must be emphasized that this interpretation may be incorrect.
NOTE3
The forename is spelt as shown but there is a loop shaped like a shepherd's crook lying on its side with the handle pointing upwards shown
above the 'ma'. Such a loop normally signifies an abbreviation but it is not known what the abbreviation could be. One possibility
is that the name is 'Ama(n)da' but it is felt to be an unusual name in the Cornwall of the period.
The final letter of the surname could be a 't' or a 'k' but it is felt more likely to be a 'k' as the name Streek
or Strike appears in other related wills.
NOTE4
The letters 'ET' appear in a long gap between 'Frances' and 'Trease' and are written like Roman capital letters
in a larger script than the words on either side. Underneath the upright of the 'T' there appears to be a
curl possibly indicating an earlier Ampersand (&). It is a mystery why these apparent initials should appear there.
They could signify the Latin word 'et' and be added to join the gap between the word 'Frances' and the word 'Trease'
(which also is not in alignment with Frances but lower in the document) or they may be a sign for say 'FT' made by Frances
on the document and around which her name was then added.

Note 1
The surname appears to read Hoop but the final symbol 'p' ends in a big swirl underneath to the right and is identical to
first symbol in the word 'pformed' earlier in the text that manifestly represents the syllable 'per'.
Note 2
The signatures of the witnesses are shown in the same hand as the will itself whereas the footnote is definitely in different hands.
The first line of the footnote appears to have been written by William Hooper. The writing before his name is assumed to
be some form of Latin abbreviation to be interpreted as signifying that he confirms that the document is a true copy.
Richard Couch's signature underneath is presumably a second signature to back up William Hooper's sgnature.

in Penrose being customary of Manor of Blisland and purchased there in name of my brother William T. to go to my son Christopher T.
NOTES:
(a)Kestle, a hamlet near Trevallet. Hill and Hoblens have not been identified with certainty. Maybe Hill represents Athill, just
across the River Kensey from Trevallet, just over ½ mile to the north.
(b) John's brother William also had sons called William and Leonard and these two Christian names indicate a close relationship to
John Treise. Later in the will he mentions as one of his two executors and trustees "John Smalecombe my brother-in-law". No record of a
Treise-Smalecombe marriage has been found but the children mentioned here were presumably children of the John Smalecombe mentioned,
thought to be the J.S. who was Town Clerk of Launceston in 1651 when Leonard held the Recordership and who, it is deduced, had married
John's sister Joanna.
(c) John and Cecilia's son Christopher would only have been about 3 years old at the time of the will because he was born on 10th
August 1656.
(d) 'Uncle Walter' has not been positively identified. This reference refers to him 'my wife's (uncle)' but, in the codicil to the
will, John refers to himself as 'executor of my uncle Walter'. There appear to be several possibilities which are discussed further in Note
4.5 but by far the most probable seems to be Christopher Walker.
(e) John and Cecilia's daughter Cecilia would have been only about 4 years old at the time of the will because she was born on 21st
August 1655.
(f) John's mother, Radigund, was a Squire before her marriage. A Joseph Squire, probably the same one, was a witness to John's father
Leonard's will only some 8 years earlier during 1651.
(g) All these properties are thought to be ones John's wife Cecilia inherited from her uncle, Christopher Walker.

NOTE 1. The copy is unusually clear to read but a small section of the right hand side of the document is missing
NOTE 2. Per (CRO FET167 Russell Ash website)
c. 22Aug1630. North Petherwin. Degory Doubte father of baptised child
If the above refers to a child of Dorothy's baptised close to their birth then Dorothy could not be over 45 in 1630. This together with her
marriage date of 1611 indicates she was born from 1585 to 1595 and was aged from about 68 to 78 when she died.
NOTE 3. The Jane Galsworthy appears to be the same Jane Gallsery in Dorothy's husband's Will. The marriage of Jane Galfery to Thomas Goode
recorded on the Cornwall OPC database on 06Jun1663 at North Petherwin (two months before the will was made) may refer to a daughter of the same person.
The following parish register entries are thought to be connected.
m. 06Jun1663 North Petherwin. Thomas Goode and Jane Galfrey (COD)
i. 11Mar1673/74 North Petherwin. Jacob Goode (COD) - possibly the father of Thomas Goode and the witness to the Will.
(in the 1641 Protestation Returns for North Petherwin Jacob Goode is living in the hamlet of Whitley)
i. 12Aug1684 North Petherwin. Jane Goode (COD)
i. 15Aug1696 North Petherwin. Thomas Goode (COD)
i. 04Jul1703 North Petherwin. Jane Goode (COD)
NOTE 4. Michael Treise, father of Michael the beneficiary, appears to be the Michael Trease christened in 1618, son of Michael who
died in 1645, and would thus be Dorothy's cousin assuming his late father was Dorothy's brother (probable but not proven).
If Michael, the beneficiary, is the son of her cousin Michael, then for him to be of age at the time of the will, he would have
to have been born on or before 1643. Michael his father was probably born after his father married on 11Jul1616 and certainly before his
christening on 01Jan1618/19. Assuming Michael his son was born after his marriage and he was of age when he married then his marriage would
have been between 1639 and 1643.
If Michael, the beneficiary, was born between 1639 and 1643, then he would have been 60+ when he married Ruth Winter and 70+ when Ruth
gave birth to their youngest son Peter.

Note 1
A John Badcock was Rector of Whitstone from at least Michaelmas 1664 because his name is given in the Hearth Tax returns of that
date 'John Badcocke clerk 6 ex'. The John Badcock who carried out the inventory of William Treise's goods cannot be he because the
Whitstone register records during 1684/5 'John Badcock parson of Whitstone was buried ye 13th of January'. Maybe the John Badcock of the
inventory was his son.
Note 2
A 'tenement called Nethacot with appurtenances in the tenure of one Horrell and John Sleeman' is mentioned in
a 1665 marriage settlement for Thomas Phillips and Susanna Gayer.

Note 1
The word transcribed as 'latten' is difficult to decipher. The word following it is almost certainly maker. The letters seem to be
??tten?.
Note 2
The word transcribed as 'worshipful' is difficult to decipher. The letters 'Worsh.' seem to be followed by 'E?' above the line.
It is possible that the 'E?' belongs to the previous line. and may follow the last word Yeoman and may represent say 'Esq.'
Note 3
Charles' signature may have been done hesitantly. The 'e' appears before the 'r'. He is almost certainly the same Charles of
the 1777 will where the signature also appears fudged.
Note 4
The letters 'cl' are very clear but not understood. The second letter is 'L' but is sized in lower case. The first letter
appears to be a lower case 'e' or 'c'
Note 5
John HAYE senior was the father of Mary HAYE, the wife of Charles TREISE.

Anthony Horndon Daniel Rogers
Note 1
The word transcribed as 'interpassion' seems to say exactly that. This part of the will follows a standard format and the word
normally used here is 'passion'.
Note 2
The word 'housal' is not in the Oxford dictionary but does appear in other West Country Wills. It is actually spelt in the
document as 'housall'. It could conceivably be a local dialect abbreviation of 'household'.
