- Inspect the databases and family trees listed on the Research Page
- Search the website with a search engine. If you are using Google, enter xxxx site:trease.org.uk where xxxx is what you are looking for : e.g. william site:trease.org.uk will find all pages with occurrences of 'William'. If the website page is lengthy, use the page search facilities of your computer to take you to the occurrences found on that page (eg CTRL F on PCs, CMD F on MACs etc.).
- Use the incomplete and discontinued Name Index shown below. This lists a few of the people on the main family tree but is no longer updated and is confusing to use.
People | Introduction | Family Tree | Name Index |
The Name Index is restricted to persons appearing on the Trease Family Tree. Its usefulness has been largely overtaken by Web Search Technology so it is no longer updated and lacks recent additions or changes made to the Family Tree. To use it, click the appropriate letter of the alphabet (above right) as follows: -
- For surname Trease (and alternative spellings such as Treays, Traies etc.) use first initial of forename/christian name e.g. "G" for "George".
- For other surnames use first character of surname. You can find female "Treases", who married, indexed both under their married surnames, and under their forenames (as Treases).
- Please also try alternative forenames and spellings where applicable, as explained below.
When you click a person shown in the index, you are taken to a narrative about either their family and children, or about their parents' family and children, as appropriate. Click the links in the narrative to take you back to their "Trease" ancestors and forward to their "Trease" descendants. To see the relationships between "Trease" families, click the "Family Tree" link at top right of the narrative. This takes you to the appropriate section of the Trease family tree or branch of that tree. From there you can browse up and down the family tree and its branches and discover how the families relate to each other.
Alternative forenames
Normally a person is indexed under the formal version of their forename. For example, Bill is indexed under W (for William), Ted is indexed under E (for Edward), Bob is indexed under R (for Robert), Jinny under V (for Virginia) and so on. In some cases, a person may have been known under a different name altogether.
Alternative spellings of surnames
Until modern times, surnames were spelt inconsistently. In general, the index uses the modern version of the surname. In some cases, it is not possible to do this with any certainty (for example - Is Smeeth now Smith or Smythe?). Do therefore try alternative spellings of the surname.
