John & Ann Smeeth

John was born in St Gennys, Cornwall during 1741 the son of Peter and Joan Sharp and the grandson of Michael and Ruth Winter.

In 1765 when he was 23, John married Ann Smeeth of St Gennys in St Gennys Parish Church. Ann was aged about 22, the daughter of a John Smeeth and his second wife Ann nee Harry(s) who had married in St Gennys early during 1744. The Smeeths were one of the oldest and most important St Gennys families and are recorded there during the 1500s. Unlike his brothers Michael and Samuel, John could not sign his name in the Parish Register although his wife Ann was able to do so.

To date no references have been found to John's occupation or where they lived in St Gennys. John and Ann had four children, three sons (one of whom died in infancy) and one daughter.

John and Ann's marriage lasted less than 10 years: John died during late 1774 and he was buried early in 1775 in St Gennys Churchyard. Ann re-married just over a year later in the adjacent parish of Poundstock to John Saunders, a yeoman farmer, and they baptised a son John Saunders in September 1776. They appear to have had no other children and their son John Saunders junior appears to have died leaving no surviving children as John Saunders senior bequeathed his farm at Tregole and other possessions to his sister's family. Ann died at Tregole in 1822 aged 77 and was buried in Poundstock churchyard. Just before he died in Poughill in 1838, her husband John had moved from Poundstock possibly to be looked after by relatives of his sister's family but he too was buried in Poundstock where his wife Ann had been buried 16 years earlier.

'Hoop' is West Country dialect for 'Bullfinch'. ('Glossary of Words in use in Cornwall', Miss M A Courtney & Thomas Q Couch, Trubner & Co. London, 1880)
1794paid John Trease for a badger £0. 1s. 0d. (St. Gennys Church Warden Accounts)

No further entries for John appear at St Gennys and it is surmised that he left the area. This was thought to be the next reference to John: -
1801m. 30Jul1801 Tresmeer. John Tracy of Egloskerry and Nancy Pawlin (COD)
but investigation shows that the surname is actually Facey and that John and Nancy Facey lived in Egloskerry after they married.
Currently it is thought likely that the following entry may refer to our John : -
?1806 m. 03Sep1806 Plymouth St Andrew. (FMP image)
John TRAYES Mariner (marks) & Margaret WILKEY of this parish (marks) Married by Banns No 677
In the presence of Francis CORNISH (marks), James BOULTER (signs - churchman)
NOTE
This family is currently being investigated. John is exactly the same age as the John of this marriage and his children's lives are closely intertwined with Thomas TRAYES, son of William TREAYS of Wiveliscombe, who like the John of the marriage joins the Royal Navy and would have been John's cousin. Also this John gives his children the same christian names as his father's brothers - William, Peter, Richard, Samuel.
