Ann Trease and John Stacy and John Broad | see Data | see Family Tree | (generation 18) | (Added October 2011) |
Ann was christened in
St Gennys, Cornwall on the 20th April 1766, the daughter of
John and Ann Smeeth
and granddaughter of
Peter and Joan Sharp.
When she was 11 years old, her father died and a year later her mother remarried to John Saunders a farmer of Tregole in the neighbouring parish of Poundstock to the north of St Gennys.
It seems likely that, as the oldest child, she would have helped her mother run the young family for a while at their new home in Tregole but
but by the time of her marriage she had moved to the hamlet of Rosecare in St Gennys parish.
She married on the 15th May 1792, when she was 26, to John Stacy in St Gennys Parish Church.
John was in his late thirties and came from another of the old St Gennys families.
He was a farmer at Roscare in St Gennys where his father had held land before him.
His father, John Stacy, had married Grace Wolcott 40 years earlier and John appears to have been their only surviving son.
His marriage to Ann was witnessed by Stephen Stacy, William Jewell, and John Smeeth. Stephen Stacy was the son of William Stacy, possibly John's uncle,
and had been born in St Gennys a few months before John. Stephen now lived in Poundstock where he had married Jane Broad, and it is
surmised that John and Stephen Stacy may have been childhood friends and John may have met Ann through Stephen.
Stephen was to die 18 months later aged only 39. The witness, John Smeeth, was almost certainly a relative of Ann's mother, Ann, possibly a brother. The connections with
the other witness, William Jewell, are currently not known.
On the 29th April 1794 Ann and John's son, John, apparently their first and only child, was baptised in St. Gennys church.
A few months later Ann's husband died aged only 39, the same age as Stephen Stacy, and was buried in St Gennys churchyard on 6th August 1794.
Ann's brother, William, and her step-father, John Saunders, acted as sureties for her when she was apponted Administratrix of her late husband's
estate.
On the 25th July 1796 Ann remarried to John Broad, a yeoman farmer of St Gennys who appears to have farmed at Treworgie Barton certainly from
1805 and possibly earlier. The marriage was witnessed by her brother William Trease, her step-father John Saunders, and
William Bray.
Ann's second husband was also fairly young, only 52, when he died in 1809. He was buried in St Gennys churchyard on the 26th April 1809.
Like John Stacy, her first husband, his death appears to have been sudden and he left no will. Ann was granted administration of her husband's estate on the 9th
of September 1809. This time, her sureties were William Bray, schoolmaster, and Thomas Coppin, yeoman. William Bray's name frequently appears in Trease family affairs of the period but his relationship with the family is unknown. Maybe he was just
a good friend. The connection with Thomas Coppin is also unknown.
When Ann died in 1840, she was living in Launcells, probably with or close to her youngest daughter Ann who had married a carpenter of Launcells
and whose family were living at Hersham Common, Launcells certainly from 1841 onwards and probably earlier. Ann was buried in St. Gennys
churchyard on the 16th December 1840.

The only Robert Broad found in St Gennys is the farmer of Trenerick who marries Margaret Hicks on 29Dec1829 and christens a daughter Peggy Hicks Broad on 07Feb1830. In 1841 census he says he is 51 and in the 1851 census he says he is 63. He dies aged 67 a few years later. He is too old for our Robert but maybe his age is wrong three times. No other appropriate Robert born St Gennys has been found so far. |
