Thomas & Mary Elson

Early life

Thomas was baptised in St Gennys on the 6th July 1779, the son of Michael and Mary Jollow and the grandson of Peter and Joan Sharp. Thomas's paternal grandparents has both died long before he was born but his maternal parents, Thomas and Margaret Jollow, were both alive and he was their first grandchild. Accordingly it is thought that Michael and Mary chose to name him Thomas after his grandfather, Thomas Jollow.

His mother, Mary, died six months after he was born. Mary had been the only surviving child of her parents and baby Thomas was their only grandchild. Following Mary's death, it is thought that grandparents Thomas and Margaret helped Michael bring up their grandson. Thomas may have been living with his grandparents sometime prior to 1792, because in January that year his grandfather drew up a Will by which Thomas was explicitly to live with his grandmother Margaret at their home in Coals Tenement, Hill, St Gennys, so long as he remained unmarried, and he was to inherit the property when Margaret died. In August 1793, when Thomas was fourteen years old, his father, Michael, remarried and lived thereafter in Clovelly, North Devon. From then on Thomas would certainly have lived with his grandparents. What is not clear is whether Michael had already moved to Clovelly and Thomas was already living with his grandparents when his grandfather had drawn up his will. In March 1794, his grandfather Thomas Jollow died. Thomas was too young to perform his executor duties so his father Michael and John Elstone the younger of St Juliot acted as Executors in Trust. It seeems likely that Thomas would have stayed with his grandmother certainly until he married.

Like his father, Thomas became a respected member of St Gennys parish and served the community as a church warden but whereas Michael served once, Thomas served twice. The first time was in 1803, during the Napoleonic Wars, when he and Thomas Hicks were church wardens. In that year ballots were drawn for men to serve in the Additional Army of England, an organisation that seems to have had a similar function to the Home Guard. Thomas, Stephen Bray, and John Hooper were the three names drawn by ballot from the total of 63 men of St. Gennys aged between 18 and 45 but almost certainly because Thomas was serving as Church warden that year, he was replaced by a substitute, James Cornelius. As an incentive, James, the substitute, would have been paid about two or three shillings a week from parish funds to do this. Interestingly the other two names drawn were also both replaced by substitutes.

Marriage

On the 2nd of April 1806, when he was nearly 27, he married Mary Elson at Lesnewth, Cornwall, about 4 miles south of St Gennys. Mary had been born during 1781 in Lesnewth. Her parentage is unknown at present but it is thought that she may have been a relative of John Elson the younger of St Juliot who was, together with Thomas's father Michael, joint executor of Thomas Jollow's will.

Thomas and Mary had two sons and a daughter, one son dying before he was a year old. All three children were baptised in St Gennys so it appears that Thomas stayed living in St Gennys parish. When his grandmother died in February 1808, he inherited her house, Coals Tenement at 'Hill', St Gennys. In 1814 Thomas served again as churchwarden at St Gennys, this time with Edward Smeeth.

Thomas then moved from St Gennys parish to possibly a larger farm in Egloskerry parish where he recruited two young apprentices to help him. In April 1818. William Pawley aged 15 was apprenticed to him followed in January 1819 by Jennifer Smith aged 11.

Early death

On the 8th August 1820, aged only 41, Thomas died. Although he was living in Egloskerry parish, he was buried in St Gennys Church three days later in a grave near to the rest of his family. Thomas did not leave a Will so he may have died suddenly and unexpectedly. His wife was granted administration of his personal estate valued around £450 on the 13th June 1821. Richard Kitto and Robert Sandercock of Egloskerry acted as sureties for her.

Their only son John was 12 years old and too young to take over his father's farm but later he too became a farmer, just like his father. Thomas's wife Mary outlived him by over 40 years and lived with her son, who seems to have remained a confirmed bachelor until quite late in his life. Certainly from at least 1841 onwards she was living with him at 'Hill', St Gennys. When he finally got married in 1857 she moved out to live nearby at Sweets, St Gennys, with a domestic servant to do the household duties for her and died there on the 13th January 1862, aged 81. She was buried in St Gennys Churchyard in a joint grave with her husband. Theirs is the oldest Trease gravestone still existing there.

Children

Mary and Thomas had three children :-

Early Life

John Trease was baptised at St Gennys Church on the 27th May 1808 and was only 12 years old when his father died. Like his father, John became a farmer, and twice served as churchwarden for St Gennys. The first time was in 1834 when he was 26 years old and his fellow churchwarden was Nathaniel Greenaway. From the early 1840's and possibly earlier John was farming at 'Hill' St Gennys which was about 1.5 miles south of St Gennys Churchtown and a large farm of over 200 acres. John lived there with his mother and employed several farm labourers and a maid to help him. In 1842 he appears to have been one of the largest landowners in the parish as he paid a poor rate of £1.0s.3d, which was the fifth largest in the parish. In 1846 he did his second term as churchwarden, this time with John Smeeth. The 1852 voters list shows the property qualification for John Trease as being the ownership of a freehold house and land at Dizard. It is thought that his father may have inherited this from his Aunt Mary Mill who died in 1808 but this is purely speculation until her Will is inspected.

Marriage

On the 24th September 1857, John got married in St Gennys Church to Mary Jewell. She had been baptised in January 1802 the daughter of Humphry Jewell and Mary Cock who had married in St Gennys in 1800. Both her parents were dead. Her father had been, like John, a yeoman farmer. After her mother had died and her father had retired from farming, she had lived with her father at a house in Rosecare, until he died in 1853. At 55 Mary was 5 years older than John and well past child bearing age so the intention of the marriage appears to have been companionship for them both. It would have been awkward for John's mother, who was then 76 years old and had spent about 50 of those years with her son, to continue living with him after he had married and his wife had moved in, so she went to live at 'Sweets' which was about a half mile northwards between Hill and what is now called Higher Crackington. She died there five years later.

John then moved to a smaller farm 'Ballhead' at Rosecare, St Gennys. The 1871 census shows that this farm was about 50 acres and John was employing two men and one boy as farm workers. These details are almost certainly correct as John himself was census enumerator for the area that census year. In 1873 John held a total of 131 acres of land in St Gennys with an estimated rental of £74.15s.0d. of which 'Ballhead' accounted for 50 acres. It is not clear what the other 81 acres related to but in his Will he mentions Dizzard (which also appeared in the 1852 voter's list) and Hill (where his father had inherited property from Thomas Jollow).

At sometime in the 1870s John moved again, this time to 'Broom Hill' farm in Rosecare where in 1881 he is recorded with his wife together with Mary Harris a 22 year old domestic servant and Richard Sandercock an 18 year old farm worker. What is not clear is why John should have moved to a slightly bigger farm. 'Ballhead' is mentioned in his will so he presumably owned that property when he moved, whereas he does not mention 'Broom Hill' in his Will.

Death

On the 14th August 1882, John drew up his will. He died on either the 24th or 25th of October and was buried in St Gennys churchyard on the 28th October 1882. He was 74. As he had no children, he left his estate to the children of his sister Mary Venning, after making provisions for his wife, Mary.

After his death, Mary continued living in Rosecare but possibly not at 'Broom Hill'. Mary drafted her will on the 12th March 1883 leaving one hundred pounds to her niece Mary Cock Smeeth and everything else to her nephew John Jewell Smeeth whom she also made sole executor. Both beneficiaries were children of her sister Loveday whose wedding to John Smeeth in 1847 had been witnessed by Mary's late husband John Trease. She died on the 23rd January 1886 and was buried in St Gennys in a separate grave alongside that of her husband.
