Michael & Mary Jollow

Revised 10Mar2019: Addition of wife's grandparents, aunts, uncles + Clovelly Land Tax records

Early Life

Michael was almost certainly born in St Gennys , Cornwall in 1753 or 1754 the son of Peter and Joan Sharp and a grandson of Michael and Ruth Winter, but his baptismal record has not been located. The name Michael had been used in this line of the Trease family for many generations and this Michael was the last to bear the name. Like the others before him, he became a yeoman. Michael's signature         Michael's signature on a 1778 legal document

His mother died in St Gennys when he was at most 3 years old and his father is thought to have died in Otterham two years later so he would barely have remembered them. After his parents' early deaths, he most likely stayed in the same area with relatives. It is unclear with whom but whoever it was appears to have taken great care of him. Unusual for the time, he acquired literacy and numeracy skills to a level that enabled him to hold the post of churchwarden in later life and it is thought these skills were acquired during his childhood; certainly, when he was in his mid twenties, he could sign his name in the marriage register.

First Wife

In October 1778, when he was about 25, Michael was married at St Gennys parish church by the charismatic vicar George Thomson, to Mary Jollow of St Gennys, the only child of Thomas and Margaret Jollow. Mary's father was a yeoman who farmed in St Gennys and unusually for the time, he appears to have paid for his daughter's education as she could sign her name in the parish register. Normally only sons were taught reading and writing skills as they were more likely to need these for their work. It may be that Thomas was very attentive to his daughter especially if she was an only child. If that was the case, then Michael probably would also have been carefully scrutinised as a prospective suitor to his daughter. Whilst Michael looks a good fit on personal grounds, as far as we know at present he did not have any wealth. However if Mary was an only child then her children would receive the benefit of her father's property and Michael's lack of property would not present a problem.

Michael's parents had been the first Treases to live in St Gennys. Unlike the Treases, Michael's father-in-law, Thomas Jollow, came from one of the well established families in the area. Thomas's father Stephen had married Elizabeth Hooper whose family were similarly well established in the area. Thomas had one sibling, a sister Mary, who was a year older than him and married into another family well established in the area. Shortly after Thomas was born his father died and his widowed mother remarried to widower John Tinny of St Gennys, whose wife Mary Heard had similarly died young. John and Elizabeth Tinny had children so Thomas Jollow had several step brothers with the surname Tinny. The Tinny family was not well established locally and appear to have their roots in St Minver but the Heard family was well established in the St Gennys area. So Michael Trease, by his marriage to Mary Jollow, established connections with many of the prominent St Gennys families. Michael's grandchildren became the last of the Trease family to live in St Gennys.

Their family

In July 1779, Mary gave birth to a son who was named Thomas presumably after her father Thomas. Six months later Mary died and thus Michael and Mary's marriage was brought to a sudden end after only fifteen months and Michael was left with a six month old baby to bring up without his mother. It seems that Mary's parents provided some level of support to Michael. Mary appears to have been their only surviving child and baby Thomas would have meant a lot to them as he was now the only grandchild they would ever have. Certainly in later life they were happy for Thomas to live with them. As a result Michael would have felt under no pressure to remarry. Also, if, as is thought, he had no property of his own, it would have been preferable for him to wait until he could find a future wife with property and they were not so numerous.

Michael continued living in St Gennys where in 1781 he shared St Gennys Churchwarden duties with William Stacy for one year. These duties were onerous as churchwardens performed many of the services for the parish that are now undertaken by Local Government Offices. The last record found of Michael in St Gennys prior to his 1793 marriage in Clovelly is in the 1784 Church Accounts which record a payment of one shilling made to him in respect of "one gray" (grave). The register entry for his second marriage records both he and his wife were "of Clovelly" so it appears he moved to Clovelly some time before 1793 but no earlier record of him at Clovelly has been found so far. Before moving to Clovelly, Michael may have been living on a 22 acre farm at South Berry in St Gennys. An 1806 record shows that Michael, then stated to be aged 50, had a life interest in this property, and that Nicholas Herd, then aged 53, was the next in succession to the property.

Second Wife

In August 1793 when Michael eventually re-married in Clovelly, he was about 40. His new wife was Ann Spettigue, the 45 year old widow of Thomas Spettigue and the daughter of Roger Maine and Ann Whitfield of Clovelly. Both Ann and Susannah Maine (thought to be her younger sister) married on the same day. Her brother John, who was a licensed victualler running the "New Inn" at Clovelly, signed the marriage register as witness to both weddings. This must have been a significant family occasion for the Maine family and Michael would no doubt have received a good welcome. Possibly celebrations would have been hosted by John at the New Inn.

In 1779 Ann had previously married to a Thomas Spettigue and had a son Thomas but both husband and son had died within three years. Her first husband, Thomas, had been a widower living in Clovelly from 1774 and possibly before then, but nothing is known of his earlier life . Thomas is recorded as the occupier of two substantial properties in Clovelly in 1780. After his death, Ann does not appear in the land tax records for the period 1781 - 1785 so she may not have had a property of her own. The records for 1786-88 have not been examined but in 1789 she is recorded as an owner/occupier of a small property in Slarah, a village on high ground above Clovelly and now known as 'Higher Clovelly'. She therefore appears to have been financially comfortable. Possibly she was being supported by the father of her base daughter. Unlike many unmarried mothers of the time, she was not in a hurry to marry after her daughter was born nor after her first husband died.

When Michael and Ann married in 1793, Ann was still living in her house at Slarah, and Michael is not recorded with any property of his own in the area. The marriage register states Michael was 'of Clovelly' so it is surmised that he may have been staying with Ann prior to their marriage. Although Clovelly was 25 miles from St. Gennys, it was relatively easy in those days to get there via the small port at Crackington Haven in St. Gennys parish. Ships delivering Welsh coal and limestone regularly arrived at Crackington haven. So residents of St Gennys and Clovelly could intermingle without difficulty but there is still the question of how Michael came to get to know a widow living in Clovelly. The answer possibly lies with Ann's daughter.

In 1770, before her first marriage to Thomas Spettigue, Ann had christened an illegitimate daughter Ann. In April 1791, two years before her remarriage to Michael, this daughter, Ann, had married George Sharp in Clovelly. George Sharp was about 25 years old and came from a seafaring family. His father appears to be William Sharp who married his wife Priscilla in Clovelly in 1746 and his grandfather is thought to be William Sharp of Clovelly, who had captained coastal ships carrying coal and other goods between South Wales and the North coast ports of Devon and Cornwall. George's father, William, may have been brother to Michael's mother Joan - the precise relationship is currently unknown - but it seems almost certain that there was a relationship
(see tentative Sharp family tree). In which case George's marriage to Ann Spettigue's daughter may have been the event that brought Michael and Ann together.

However, there are other possible "Jollow" connections. The marriage of a Thomas Jollow to Catherine Lee is recorded at Clovelly in 1760. In 1799 Ann's property at Slarah was occupied by James Jewell and in 1805 by William Heard who may be related to Mary Heard the first wife of Elizabeth Jollow nee Hooper's second husband John Tinny.

Second Marriage

Ann Spettigue was past child bearing age when she married Michael so they had no children. In November 1793, a few months after their marriage, Michael witnessed another marriage in Clovelly so it looks as though he and Ann stayed in Clovelly, probably in Ann's house in Slarah. In May 1795, Michael became joint executor in trust of the will of his father in law, Thomas Jollow, who had died in March 1793/4. Michael must have felt reassured by the terms of the will under which his son inherited property that set him up for life. In 1797 Michael acted as surety for Richard Prince, another licensed victualler, who ran the Red Lion (which is on the quayside at Clovelly) and who 10 years earlier had married Susan Sharp, thought to be sister of the George Sharp who had married Ann Trease's illegitimate daughter.

Sometime before 1799 Michael and Ann must have returned to St Gennys, possibly to look after Michael's ageing mother-in-law as they do not appear in the 1799 Clovelly land tax records and Ann's property at Slara is then occupied by James Jewell. Similarly in 1800 there is no property record of them in Clovelly and the house at Slara is occupied by another person. The next Clovelly property record examined is for 1805 and shows that the house at Slarah is then occupied by William Heard.

In April 1806 Michael would almost certainly have attended his son Thomas's marriage to Mary Elson at Lesnewth, which is about 4 miles south of St Gennys. In May 1806 a farm at South Berry in St Gennys, then occupied by Michael is put up for auction. In 1808, Michael's mother-in-law, Margaret Jollow died and it is thought that after Michael had cleared up her estate, he and Ann were then free to return to Slarah. In 1810 Ann's property at Slarah is occupied by Ann Sharp, her daughter, but the 1815 land tax record shows that by then Michael and Ann had returned to Ann's house at Slarah where they remained to live out their retirement years.

No doubt Michael would subsequently have made frequent return visits to his son's family in St Gennys and later to Egloskerry after his son had moved there.

Later Years

In January 1814 Michael attended the marriage of his wife's granddaughter Priscilla Sharp in Clovelly church to James Lee, a mariner, and signed the marriage register as witness. Interestingly, there may be another family link here as a Thomas Jollow had married Catherine Lee of Clovelly in 1760. Ann's daughter had two other children - Thomas Sharp born in 1795 and William Sharp born in 1797. Thomas Sharp, like his father George, became a mariner. The other son, William Sharp, died at Slara in November 1819, aged 23. The fact that he died in Slara may indicate that he was living with his mother at his grandparents' house. It is possible that George Sharp, whose burial has not been located, had earlier died elsewhere, possibly at sea, and that Ann's daughter had taken her family to live with Michael and Anne.

On the 8th of August 1820 Michael's only son Thomas died in Egloskerry aged only forty one. Michael would have made every effort to attend the the burial service which was held at St Gennys Church three days later on 11th August. Thomas left no Will so it is thought his death was sudden and unexpected. Michael acted very quickly with regard to his own Will which was completed on 23rd August 1820. One of the executors was to be Edward Smeeth a yeoman of St. Gennys from the same family as his
late brother John's wife and the other was William Ashton a schoolmaster of Clovelly who appears to be a close friend. By the provisions of his will, Michael appears to take scrupulous care to fairly provide for the less fortunate of his close family members in accordance with their needs such as his unmarried niece Loveday Marshall and his brother Samuel and Samuel's children. For these reasons, it is thought that Michael was a caring and considerate person and that view seems to be confirmed by the comment on his gravestone: -

"In him was exemplified the veracity of the assertion 'The righteous have hope in his death'."

Michael outlived his son by two years, dying in Slara in July 1822 aged 68 or 69. After his death Ann continued living in Slara, possibly with her daughter, for a further 13 years until she died there in 1835 aged 88 years. The record of her burial was signed by Charles Kingsley Senior, father of the author Charles Kingsley. She was buried in a joint grave with Michael in Clovelly Churchyard.

Her daughter Ann Sharp continued living in Clovelly until she died in 1861 aged 91. Like her mother she was comfortably off with an independent income which enabled her to employ a personal servant. Her remaining son, Thomas, married his wife Ann in Ireland probably around 1828 where his first child Thomas was born and about 1832 set up home in Clovelly where he had three further children recorded in the 1841 census - Ann Jane, Priscilla, and Eleanor.

His Son

Michael had only one child : -

TENTATIVE SHARP FAMILY TREE

The records are incomplete. The tree below is an attempt to unravel the information available. William and Priscilla's family seem more or less intact but all the other families have (substantial) missing elements. It is known that William Sharp who is at the head of the tree was a ship's captain of the boats that carried goods, mainly coal, between ports on the North coast of Devon and Cornwall and South coast of Wales. The other Sharps may also have been seafarers whose missing records are in other ports. The early Clovelly references are from BTS which are often incomplete and inaccurate. Two of the wives recorded were Joans viz. Joan wife of William d. 1749 and Joan wife of Charles d. 1734 so the chance that they had daughters also called Joan is high.

These entries appear correct as the Julian Calendar was implemented in 1752 so the comment "the 1753-1755 gap years" in St. Gennys baptismal records has been removed. However in the Cornwall OPC database the years 1752/3/4 are missing implying a problem with the register. It may be that the missing entries were found in the wrong place or that these entries appear on a different copy of the St Gennys Register from that used by the Cornwall OPCs.

Her mother's relationship to Digory ROGERS
In 1755 a Henry ROGERS witnessed Thomas JOLLOW's marriage. In 1768 Thomas JOLLOW witnessed Digory ROGERS' marriage - as per entry shown below. It seems likely that Digory and Henry ROGERS are related to Thomas's wife Margaret ROGERS : -

An interpretation of the above events is that the same Henry ROGERS is father to Margaret JOLLOW and Digory ROGERS through his first and his second marriage. Margaret's brother Henry, as the oldest male, inherits Pengould, when their father dies in 1763. When her brother Henry dies in 1795, her sole surviving brother Digory inherits Pengould, having returned from Davidstow around 1789, possibly to help his ailing brother, Henry. From about 1774 until 1782, while Digory was in Davidstow, Michael Trease's brother Samuel worked for the same Digory ROGERS.

NOTES

Mary MILL was Thomas JOLLOW's sister. Her mother, Elizabeth nee HOOPER, remarried to John TINNY after her father Stephen JOLLIFE died : -
- 1728 m. 20May1728 St Gennys. Elizabeth JOLLOW & John TENNEY (s/o Jacob & Joanna TENNEY)

Accordingly the Jacob and John TINNEY mentioned in the will are thought to be her step brothers. The Nathaniel MILL appears to have been born in 1731 and have died in 1820 age 90. Mary must have married one of Nathaniel's brothers. We know of three surviving brothers, David (c. 1720), John (c. 1726), Thomas (c.1728).

We know from a TINNEY family tree on the Internet the following: -
