Early Life
Mary was baptised in St Gennys on the 19th January 1812, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Elson and the granddaughter of Michael and Mary Jollow. She was only about 8 years old when her father died. It is thought that after his death she lived with her mother and brother in St Gennys.
Marriage
On 27th March 1834, when she was 22 years old, Mary got married in St Gennys church to John Venning of Marhamchurch, Cornwall (about 5 miles North of St Gennys). Her brother John, who was churchwarden that year, and Edward Smeeth, another local farmer acted as witnesses. After their marriage, John and Mary set up home at Lee Farm in Morwenstow (on the coast about 10 miles North of St Gennys) where they spent all their married life together and where John farmed for all his working life. It was a large farm of around 300 acres and John employed many workers both to help run the farm and to support his increasingly large family. John and Mary had altogether 9 children, three sons and six daughters. Mary died there in 1855, aged only 43 and John died there in 1880, aged 74.
Death
When Mary died, her youngest daughter, Emma, was only 4 years old and the next oldest daughter was 11 years old. It is known that Emma was sent to boarding school when she was old enough and it is thought that possibly some of her older sisters may also have been similarly sent to boarding school. At the time of his sister Mary's death, the childrens' Uncle John Trease was a 47 year old bachelor. When he married two years later, his wife was too old to have any children of her own. We know that at least one other child stayed with John and his wife and it is surmised that his late sister Mary's children, who were his only close relatives, may also have stayed with them and possibly he visited them from time to time. When John died in 1882 he left his estate to them, granting a bequest of £300 to each of the six nieces, leaving his estate at Dizzard to nephew John, and the rest of his estate including the farm at Ball Head, St Gennys, to nephew Daniel.
Children
John and Mary's children:-
- Son John Venning was christened at Morwenstow on Boxing Day 1834. He lived on the farm at Lee helping his father and learning about farming. He then took over the 165 acre Rectory Farm in Morwenstow, where his next door neighbour at the Vicarage was the redoubtable Reverend R. S. Hawker. On the 6th January 1859 he married Eliza Crocker at Lewannick and for a time her mother lived with them. He subsequently moved to a bigger farm in Warkleigh Devon. By 1881 he had moved to Woods farm, Farringdon, Devon where he was a farm manager/bailiff. In 1883 he inherited an estate at Dizzard in St Gennys from his Uncle John. By 1891 he had become a land agent living at Yeo house in Yealmpton, Devon where he died in 1899. Currently it is not known where and when his wife died. Their marriage was childless.
- Daughter Ann Venning was christened at Morwenstow on the 3rd June 1836 and lived at Lee farm until 1874. On the 26th March 1874, when she was about 38, she got married at Morwenstow to John Galsworthy in a double wedding with her sister Emma. Her husband died in June 1876 and on the 29th January 1880, she remarried to James Trewin, a widower, who was the brother of Henry Trewin who had married her sister Emma in the 1874 double wedding. James Trewin had married his first wife, Mary Jane Marshall of Bude Haven, in June 1868 but she had died in December 1878. They had at least three children. Ann was, at the time of her second marriage aged about 44, a similar age to her husband, and too old to have any children of her own. James and Ann lived at Maer farm, a farm of about 300 acres in Poughill, where they brought up James's children by his previous marriage. Ann is thought to have died on 7th January 1901. James died on the 7th January 1904 at Tewkesbury.
- Daughter Elizabeth Venning was born at Lee Morwenstow on the 22nd February 1838 and christened in Morwenstow church four months later. She lived at Lee farm until the 3rd November 1864 when she got married in Morwenstow to John Allanson Vivian, a farmer. John and Elizabeth lived most or all of their early married life at Benbole in St Kew where John ran a farm of around 140 acres. They had three daughters, Mary Allanson Vivian, Millicent Harriett Vivian, and Mabel Venning Vivian. By 1891 John and Elizabeth had moved to Pennant farm, St Kew. By 1901 John had retired and they were living at Trevanson House St Breock with their daughter Millicent. Currently it is not known when Elizabeth and her husband died.
- Son Edmund Venning and his brother Daniel were twins born on the 27th September 1839 at Lee farm, Morwenstow. Unlike his brothers, Edmund trained to become a General Practitioner. Edmund died on the 8th November 1881 after a long and painful illness. Just before he died he had been lodging at Samuel Olde's, a saddler and ironmonger in Fore Street Stratton where Samuel's wife Fanny and her sister Edith had been very attentative to Edmund. Edmund appears to have never married nor had children.
- Son Daniel Venning and his twin brother Edmund were born on the 27th September 1839 at Lee farm, Morwenstow. Edmund stayed on the farm initially learning the farming trade, helping his father and probably increasingly taking over management of the farm. On the 10th June 1879 he married Rhoda Ann Salter in Launcells. The following year his father died and Daniel inherited Lee farm. He and Rhoda lived there for the first years of their marriage. At the end of 1880/beginnng of 1881, Rhoda who was then about 40 years old gave birth to their only child, a daughter Mary Elizabeth Venning. In 1883, he became sole executor of his Uncle John's Will and inherited estate in St Gennys including Ball Head farm from his Uncle John. By 1891 Daniel had given up farming and moved to Riverside, Stratton where he had become a banker's agent. His wife died there on June 5th 1891 aged 50. Daniel died in Bude on the 11th January 1918.
- Daughter Mary Venning was born at Lee Morwenstow on the 17th May 1841. On the 4th November 1863 she married Charles Henry Walter, a commercial traveller, in Morwenstow. They had one surviving child, a son Charles Venning Walter, who was born about 1864. By 1881 Mary's husband Charles had become a hotel proprietor and was running the Farley Hotel at 46 Union Street in Plymouth. After he died in 1889, Mary moved to Bristol where she ran the (Walters) Bank Hotel in Bridge Street with her son Charles and his wife Emily. In 1897 her son Charles died leaving his wife Emily and three children, who were all living with Mary at Bank Hotel. On the 12th December 1901, she drew up a Will, naming all her grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews alive at that time. On the 20th December she died in Bristol. When the will was eventually proven in 1968, after her last child Charles died, there were no descendants left. Hence a search had to be conducted for all the nieces and nephews to distribute the estate that had been sitting there for 67 years.
- Daughter Jane Venning was born at Lee Farm Morwenstow on the 8th October 1842. She lived there until the 20th June 1861 when she married, in Morwenstow church, Thomas Shearme, a farmer. They spent their early married life at Peruppa farm in Mevagissey before they moved to Devon to run South Harepath farm in Beaford. By 1891 Thomas, although only 51, had retired from farming and the family had moved to the Hermitage in Exwick, Devon, near Exeter. By 1901 the family had moved again, this time to Upleadon in Gloucestershire. Jane is believed to have died in Gloucestershire in 1907. Currently the whereabouts and date of Thomas's death are unknown. Thomas and Jane had a large family of four daughters and six sons.
- Daughter Caroline Venning was born at Lee Morwenstow on the 25th December 1843. She was 35 and the last daughter to marry when she got married in Morwenstow church to Edward Meatherell on the 31st March 1879. In the early years of marriage, Edward ran a farm at Herdacott, Kilkhampton. By 1891 he had moved to Boyton to run another farm there. They had one daughter and three sons. Currently it is not known when or where Caroline and Edward died.
- Daughter Emma Venning was born at Lee Morwenstow on the 20th April 1850. She went to boarding school and at age 10 was recorded at Falcon Rowe, Bude with schoolmistress Emma Risdon. On the 26th March 1874 in a joint wedding with her sister Ann, she married Henry Trewin. Later her sister Ann was widowed and remarried to Henry Trewin's brother. After their marriage Henry ran Thorne Farm at Stratton and Emma spent the rest of her life there. They had two surviving daughters, Leila and Kathleen. Emma died at Thorn farm on the 16th April 1898. Henry died at Kings Hill Bude on the 6th February 1926.
