Thomas Marshall & Mary Life Story | Data | Tree (Generation 17)

Mary is thought to have been born in St Gennys around 1753 - 1755, the daughter of Peter and Joan Sharp and the granddaughter of Michael and Ruth Winter, but her baptismal record has not been found. She appears to be the last child to be born before her mother died in 1755 although she could possibly also have been the twin of her brother Michael.

Her father is thought to have died in Otterham in 1757 so she may have been orphaned as young as two. Nothing is known of her childhood. It is presumed that close relatives of her family will have brought her up and acted as her guardians.

Mary married Thomas Marshall of St Gennys in St Gennys Parish Church in April 1770. As she was under age, the marriage had to be approved by her guardians but they are not specifically named as such. The witnesses to the marriage are given as John Jewell and John Short. Her husband Thomas Marshall was a farmer aged about 26 and came from a family who had been long established in St Gennys. Thomas had been christened in September 1744, the son of Thomas Marshall and Alice Robins who had married in St Gennys church 2 years earlier. Thomas's father ran Pencuke Farm which was in the south east part of St Gennys parish and also had another property known variously as 'Ronks' or 'Hill'. Despite Mary being an orphan without any apparent property or wealth, she appears to have married into a comparatively well-off family.

Three children of the marriage have been found in the parish registers, all of whom were christened in St Gennys, the last in 1778, when Mary would have been of child bearing age for up to another 20 years. A fourth child, Roger, appears in the Bishop's Transcript of the St Gennys Parish Register but strangely not in the register itself, where the baptisms are not in a single contiguous section and there seems to be a gap from 1768 to 1771.

So far efforts to find the burial record for Thomas Marshall and to establish for certain a burial for his wife have been unsuccessful. If Thomas died around 1778, Mary may have remarried and been buried with a different surname. In 1785 a widow, Mary Marshall, married John Sandercock in St Gennys, who is subsequently referred to as a shoemaker of Pencuke. Although his wife was probably related to the Marshall family of Pencuke she appears a younger person than Mary Marshall nee Trease. Research into the family of Mary and Thomas is continuing.

Thomas MARSHALL
The Marshall family were recorded in St Gennys in 1524. The main Marshall family appear to have lived at Pencuke, about 2 miles south-east of St Gennys Churchtown and there were other branches elsewhere in St Gennys.
The following appear to be his grandparents: -
m. 18Oct1712 Otterham. Roger Marshall and Elizabeth HARRIS (COD)
c. 04Mar1718 St Gennys. Micarah MARSHALL son of Roger & Elizabeth (COD)
NOTE: Thomas & Mary name their first? son 'Roger'. His father Thomas in his Will mentions Micaah his brother. Although no baptismal record found it seems highly probable that Mary's husband Thomas is the grandson of Roger and Elizabeth who married at Otterham.
The following appear to be his parents: -
m. 20Oct1742 St Gennys. Thomas Marshall and Alice Robins (COD)
Unfortunately there is a 4 year gap in the St Gennys Baptism register from end of 1741 to beginning of 1746 but a possible baptism is recorded in the Bishop's Transcript
1744c. 30Sep1744 Thomas son of Thomas Marshall of St. Gennys (COD)
There are also many other Marshall baptisms around this period in St Gennys register which normally has only about 12 baptisms a year: -
c.22Sep1746 Loveday d/o Thomas and Alice Marshall;
c.19Dec1746 Edward, b.Sep1757 Katherine, b.01Jan1748 John, b.25Apr1754 William, s/d of Stephen or Stephen and Eliz Marshall;
c.24May1740 Digory, b.13Jul1751 John, b.25Apr1756 Stephen s/o John or John and Mary Marshall;

The same for Greenapark 1d.
1770Banns of Marriage between Thomas Marshall & Mary Trease both of this parish were duly published &(?) in this church without Denial.
Thomas Marshall of this Parish and Mary Trease of this Parish were Married in this Church by Banns with Consent of parents this Seventeenth Day of April in the Year One Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy by me G Thomson Vicar.
This Marriage was Solemnized between Us - Thomas Marshall - The mark of Mary Trease
In the Presence of - John Jewell - Thos.(?) Short(ER)
NOTE:In the Cornwall OPC Database (COD) the second witness is transcribed as 'John'.
John SHORT appears to be the son of Roger SHORT and Philippa HEARD who married in 1726 and the brother of Philippa SHORT who married Digory ROGERS
The consent of parents was necessary if Mary was under age and fits with her being born around 1753-55.

Wife Mary TREASE
After Loveday was baptised in 1778, no further baptisms are found in St Gennys. Did either Thomas or Mary die without record in St Gennys. If Thomas died, Mary could have remarried. Certainly a widow Mary Marshall married John Sandercock in 1785 and had children until 1803 when Mary could have been no younger than 48 so pushing it for age. Details of this family appear in a tentative Sandercock tree which is appended to the family of William Sandercock and Dorothy Gynn Trease If she did not remarry, several deaths nearby are recorded:-
Option 1 - Mary Marshall of Penkuke d.1820 - can't be her
1820i. 17Dec1820 St Gennys. Mary Marshall age 76 of Pencuke - makes her born 1744 (COD)
1821w. Will of Mary Marshall widow of St Gennys (COD AP/M/3422)
NOTE: This Mary can't be our Mary because her daughter Loveday married. Details are retained here so that she can be ruled out. Daughter Alice wife of S. Smeeth one guinea
Daughter Loveday, wife of John Luxon one guinea
Stephen Smeeth and John Luxon sons in law one shilling each
Son William Marshall executor and residue of estate
28Jan1820
Witnesesses: Stephen Bray and John Marshall
Mary Marshall signs albeit a crude signature
Option 2 - Mary Marshall of Wainhouse Corner d.1828 - can't be her
1828i. 10Aug1828 St Gennys. Mary Marshall age 86 of Wainhouse Corner (COD)
Age at death makes her born 1742 in which case a marriage in 1770 would not need consent of parents
Option 3 - Mary Marshall of Warbstow died 1823 age 70 - could be her
1823i. 06Jul1823 Otterham. Mary Marshall age 70 of Warbstow - makes her born 1753 (COD)
NOTE: The age at death fits so this appears the most likely burial for her.

Mary is currently being researched. Very difficult to trace children of the possible 1800 marriage. None in area.

NOTE: William Bray is a schoolmaster and in 1809 is joint administrator of the estate of John Broad husband of Ann Trease
The circumstantial evidence of the marriage witnesses that Mary Marshall is the daughter of Thomas and Mary Marshall nee Trease and cousin of the Thomas Trease who married Mary Elson in 1806 seems strong.
The John Saunders of the marriage does not sign his own name so appears less educated than many yeoman farmers - this is compatible with him being a labourer but if they did marry in 1800 it is unusual for there to be only one child christened as late as 1816.

NOTE As this Mary Marshall refers to Pencuke it is thought she is related to the Thomas Marshall who bequeaths Penkuke to William. It is thought that William may be the son of Thomas and Alice Marshall mentioned in Thomas Marshall's Will. In which case, he may be the following William : -
