William Sandercock & Dorothy Life Story | Data | Tree (Generation 20)

Dorothy Gynn Trease was born on Sunday 12th April 1852 the daughter of James and Elizabeth Gynn and a granddaughter of William and Martha Uglow.

She lived with her parents at the smithy at Warbstow Cross until she got married on the 19th February 1876 at Tower Street Chapel in Launceston. It was a Bible Christian Marriage and her husband was William Sandercock, a 20 year old tailor living at New House in St Gennys. William's father, Benjamin had died in St Gennys in 1871. Benjamin had been a farm worker and married a widow, Mary Ann Danger nee Mark, in St Gennys church on 3rd August 1839. Benjamin had looked after the spinster Loveday Marshall his house at Tresparret Lane, St Gennys in her declining years until she died in 1852. Loveday was the daughter of Thomas Marshall and Mary Trease, and it is thought she may have been related in some way to Benjamin. William's mother, Mary Ann, had children by her previous marriage to Robert Danger.

Dorothy Gynn Sandercock nee Trease died in the Stratton area early in 1924 aged 72. We have not yet found out when her husband William died. Six children from their marriage have been so far identified : -

William was the son of Benjamin Sandercock and Mary Ann nee MARK.

In 1851 Loveday Marshall the daughter of Mary Marshall nee Trease was living with William's father Benjamin and his family. In 1841 she was living with Benjamin's cousin Robert Sandercock. The Sandercock family tree have been researched in the hope that it may throw some light on what became of Mary Trease who married Thomas MARSHALL.

There are numerous Sa(u)undercock family members in the area using similar Christian names. Below is a tentative first attempt at a family tree. Robert baptised in 1738 had a grandson George who married Elizabeth MARSHALL granddaughter of Mary MARSHALL nee TREASE in 1819 and another grandson William who married Dorothy Gynn TREASE in 1876.

In the 1841 census Loveday MARSHALL, daughter of Mary MARSHALL nee TREASE was staying with
Robert Sandercock and his wife Ann nee HARRIS. No baptismal record has been found for Robert so his parentage is unknown, but a witness to his wedding in 1832 was John MARK whose relative Mary MARK also married in 1832 and subsequently became Benjamin Sandercock's second wife in 1839. In the 1851 census Loveday MARSHALL was staying with Robert Sandercock senior's son Benjamin Sandercock and his wife Mary nee MARK.

Family of Robert SANDERCOCK and Mary DENNIS

Baptisms of Robert's two sons, John and George were in St Gennys. Their first son Robert, was baptised in Jacobstow. Often a first child was baptised at the church of the wife's family possibly because childbirth was so risky in those days and the wife stayed with her mother or close relative for the first confinement.
His first wife died young aged 48 and he remarried to a widow and had a second family.

Family of John SANDERCOCK and Mary MARSHALL

In 1785 John married a widow Mary MARSHALL. This could be Mary nee TREASE but, if so, she would have been almost 50 when last child born and 84 not 74 when she died. It seems more probable that this is a different Mary MARSHALL about 10 years older than Mary nee TREASE but so far cannot find any other suitable widow in area.
