Childhood
William was baptised in St Gennys, Cornwall on the 21st April 1771 the son of John and Ann Smeeth and the grandson of Peter and Joan Sharp.
His father died during the Xmas of 1774 and about 18 months later his mother married John Saunders, who was a yeoman with a farm at Poundstock, where William may have spent the rest of his childhood. William was well educated for the time and presumably well cared for by his mother and her new husband.        William's signature on a 1794 legal document
Work
In 1793 he starts to be mentioned in the St Gennys church accounts and by 1794 he describes himself as a yeoman in St Gennys. It is surmised that, after he became of age in 1792, he may have taken over the running of a farm in St Gennys parish. On the 27th July 1795 Ann Treise was baptised in St Gennys church and William appears to be her father. Ann was the illegitimate daughter of Mary Burden, a local girl who was a couple years older than William. It is not known what became of Ann nor why William decided not to marry her but her mother Mary is thought to have married Barnaby Rogers in October 1800. The overseers of the parish took care to avoid illegitimate children becoming a burden on the parish funds and William would have had to see to it that Mary had adequate funds to look after the child if she survived.
Marriage
On the 27th March 1797 William married Martha Uglow who lived in the neighbouring parish of Jacobstow. Martha was about 21 years old and one of at least 10 children of William Uglow and Frances Jolliffe. (Note: external website). The best man was William Baker, whose brother Samuel had married Martha's sister Catharine and whose brother Andrew worked in the Excise Service. John, the first of William and Martha's children, and the first grandchild of his mother Ann, was born only a month after they married and baptised a few weeks later in Poundstock where William's mother lived.
On the 16th August 1799, William joined the Excise Service. They provided an attractive employment package including a pension scheme (unique at the time), exemption from direct taxation, career progression and security of employment. The drawbacks were frequent moves, and unpopularity with, or even hostility from, the general public. Barriers to entry were that the Service preferred to employ the relatives of serving officers and demanded that applicants provide two sureties prepared to give bonds for at least £200 each, as security and to ensure good conduct. The same year that William joined, Andrew Baker, the Excise officer and brother of the best man at the wedding, died and it is thought the two events may be connected.Excise Officer
William's first job was Supernumerary at Modbury, about 10 miles East of Plymouth. This was a minor role attending the Ride Officer by carrying his bags etc and William would only have been paid for the actual days worked (on a scale of £40 p.a.). However, he was quickly promoted and on the 6th February 1800, became Ride Officer - Launceston 1st ride. As such, he received an annual salary of £75 but, out of that, he had to pay the costs of keeping a horse. It is thought that at the start he worked away from home as the children were baptised at Jacobstow but certainly from the time he was posted to Chudleigh the children were baptised in churches near to his place of work.
His moves after that were frequent:-
- 2nd October 1802. He voluntarily chose to switch with the Ride Officer for Barnstaple.
- 20th October 1803. He was switched from Barnstaple to Chudleigh.
- 30th August 1805. He voluntarily chose to be Ride Officer for Totnes.
- 23rd January 1807. He voluntarily chose to be Ride Officer for Helston.
- 18th January 1812. He was promoted to be Officer of Dock 2nd Division Plymouth. His salary would have increased to £100 p.a.
- 10th February 1813. He voluntarily chose to be Officer for Redruth.
- 9th March 1814. He was switched to be Port Gauger of the Isles of Scilly. For this job he would have used a gauging-rod to assess the amount of Excise Duty due on casks.
- Before 8th February 1817 he appears to have returned to Redruth as son Joseph was baptised there on that date.
- 26th May 1820. He was switched from Redruth to Truro 1st Division.
- 5th September 1820. He was compulsorily retired as he was deemed "through infirmities, incapable of performing duty of Officer". He was then earning £110 p.a. It is thought his pension would have been around half that amount. When he died in 1856 his annual pension was £65.
- 7th October 1820. Pension to be paid in Barnstaple Collection.
It is not known what infirmities caused his retirement but it is notable that he lived for a further 36 years so they were unlikely to have been life threatening. It may be that the problems were stress related and lessened once he had left the Excise service. Working in the Scilly Islands had probably left scars. William's family were almost certainly living in the off-island of Tresco in 1815 when son James was baptised there. Some islanders, particularly those in the "off-islands" were suffering impoverishment caused by, amongst other things : -
- the success of preventative officers in reducing smuggling
- salt, previously untaxed, being taxed from 1812 at 30 times the price of the salt itself
- the number of men allowed to be pilots being reduced by Trinity House
William would be seen as part of the Establishment inflicting these hardships and as such likely to have been detested by islanders who would almost certainly have shunned him and his family and made them feel uncomfortable.
Retirement
When he was compulsorily retired on health grounds he was only 49 and had nine children, ranging in age from 3 to 23 years. In retirement, he leased a 25 acre farm at North Tregeare where he and Martha lived for the rest of their lives. Two years after William left the Excise Service, William and Martha had their last child, born at North Tregear in 1822. After that, few further references to them can be found. We do know that on the 14th October 1832, a Martha Trease, witnessed the marriage of Richard Uglow to Rachel Pearce at Egloskerry together with Jane Hoskin, and William Larker, and believe that this was Martha at the wedding of her brother Richard. On the 15th July 1855, Martha died at North Tregeare, aged about 80 years, and on the 2nd April 1856, William died there, aged about 86. Their joint gravestone is in Tresmeer Churchyard.
Children
William and Martha had five sons and three daughters who survived to adulthood plus one son who died in infancy and another who died aged 18.
- Son John was born in Poundstock, Cornwall during 1797 . He joined the Excise Service and after service in Devon moved to the Midlands where he married Esther Whitehouse in 1826. By 1837 he was Port and Export Surveyor of the Port of Liverpool and by 1841 had become Supervisor of the newly formed Inland Revenue in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire. He retired in 1854 and died in 1882. Esther died in 1896. They had eleven children, 4 sons and 4 daughters who reached adulthood and 3 sons who died as infants.
- Daughter Frances was born in Jacobstow during 1800 and married William Turner, a schoolmaster, in 1828. They had three daughters. One died when she was 18. The other two became schoolteachers and never married. William and Frances both died at Tresmeer, in 1857 and 1867 respectively.
- Son William was born in Jacobstow during 1802. He joined the Excise Service in 1824 and married Mary Chapman at Black Torrington, Devon in 1832. They had a daughter Caroline born circa 1835, but his wife died at Burslem, Staffordshire in 1837 and William died at Stone, Staffordshire in 1841.
- Daughter Martha was born in Chudleigh, Devon on the 12th July 1804 and baptised there two weeks later. Martha lived with her parents on their farm and undertook many fundraising activities in support of the Wesleyan Methodist missionaries.
On the 8th May 1852, when she was nearly 48 years old, she finally got married in Tresmeer Church. Her husband was George Frayne, a 61 year old widower who had a blacksmith's smithy at Splat which was almost next door and who must have known Martha for almost 30 years. George had married his first wife, Martha Searle in 1818 and they had brought up a family before she had died in 1846. Working with George was his son, John, who lived there with his wife and children.
John's son George went on to become the Reverend George Frayn who is referred to in the "Who's who" book published by the Wesleyan Church. Martha died on the 21st December 1863 and was buried in Tresmeer Church on Christmas Day of that year. Her memory must have lived on with the work of the Reverend George Frayn and her gravestone in Tresmeer churchyard acts as a more lasting commemoration of her life.
- Son Thomas was born on the 7th June 1806 in Brixham, Devon and baptised there on the 20th July 1806. On the 23rd July 1831, while living in Tresmeer, he married Mary Prout in the local Church. His wife Mary was 11 years older and at the time living in Egloskerry. Thomas and Mary did not have any children of their own but they took care of their niece, Caroline Trease, from at least age 6 when she became an orphan and possibly earlier. By 1841 they had settled in Egloskerry where they ran a small farm.
By 1851 they had moved to a 10 acre farm, "Grove", in Tremaine. Thomas then gave up farming and moved to Egloskerry village where he took over the role of schoolmaster with assistance from his niece Caroline shortly after William Turner, husband of Thomas's sister Frances, had given up the very same role. To supplement his income, Thomas also became "receiver" for the local Post Office. Thomas died on the 7th March 1869 and his wife Mary died just under a year later. They were both buried in Egloskerry churchyard where their joint gravestone still stands.
- Daughter Ann was baptised at Manaccan, Cornwall on the 23rd October 1808 and remained unmarried, living with her parents as housekeeper until their deaths. She then went to live with her sister Frances's family. She died while living with them at Warbstow and her funeral service was held at Tresmeer church on the 16th August 1884. Strangely, there is no headstone for her in the churchyard.
- Daughter Jane was born circa 1810/11, probably in Manaccan, Cornwall. In 1832 she married Richard Parsons, shoemaker, in Egloskerry, Cornwall. Jane and Richard subsequently lived in Week St Mary, Cornwall and had at least 9 children. Richard died during 1882 and Jane during 1890.
- Son James was born during 1815 probably in Tresco, Isles of Scilly where he was christened. During late 1840 he married Elizabeth Gynn in Warbstow, Cornwall where he was village blacksmith. James and Elizabeth had 5 sons and two daughters who survived to adulthood plus one daughter who died in infancy. Elizabeth died in 1855 whilst James died in 1880. Two sons and a daughter emigrated to Australia and one son emigrated to North America.
- Son Joseph was baptised at St Uny Church, Redruth on the 8th February 1817 and buried at the same location on the 1st of December 1817.
- Son Joseph was baptised at St Uny Church, Redruth on the 25th October 1818. He died in 1836 when he was living at Churchtown, Egloskerry probably with one of his older brothers or sisters. His funeral was held at Tresmeer Church on the 28th September 1836. Like his sister Ann, there is no headstone for him in the churchyard.
- Son Daniel was baptised at Tresmeer church on the 24th November 1822. He stayed with his parents working the farm at North Tresmeer. After his parents died he emigrated to Wisconsin, USA. He served in the Civil War and the last record we have of him is being mustered out at Richmond, Virginia on 03Jul1865.

His life in Cornwall
Daniel TREASE was baptised at Tresmeer church on the 24th November 1822. His mother was then in her forties, quite an advanced age for childbirth in those days.
Daniel does not appear to have taken an apprenticeship to learn a trade. Instead, he appears to have spent his youth and childhood working on his parents' farm at North Tregeare, presumably taking on more responsibilities as his parents got older. By 1841 Daniel had completely taken over the running of the farm from his father and continued living there with his parents until they both died. On the 21st April 1856 he was granted administration of his father's estate which amounted to less than £20 and that is the last definite record we have of him in England.
His parent's property, which consisted of a large farmhouse and a rather small farm, was leased and would not have been viable for Daniel who, unlike his father, probably had little or no other income. The only other known occupant at the time, his sister Ann, moved to stay with her sister Frances and Daniel also vacated the property to seek a living elsewhere. He was 35 years old with no wife, children, or other ties and no trade or occupation other than farming and probably no savings. The little money he inherited from his father's estate possibly would have given sufficient to tide him over for long enough to seek a more promising future. Emigration must have been an attractive proposition for him.
His life in the USA
The next record of Daniel is in the US census taken on the 13th July 1860 at Delafield, in Waukesha County, Wisconsin. This records a Daniel TRIES, born in England and aged 40, working as a farmhand at the farm of Ann Graham, born in England and aged 56. Ann's husband, John, had died in June 1858 but, in addition to Daniel, her sons were also working the farm. We do not currently know when Daniel went to the USA but think that it would have been sooner after April 1856 rather than later, possibly sometime in 1858 after AnnÕs husband had died. His parents' deaths were not unexpected and what he was to do after they died was a question to which Daniel must have given much thought over the years. By 1856 none of his close family had emigrated, so why did he choose Wisconsin, which seems such a little known part of the USA today? The answer seems to lie with the brothers and sisters of his late mother, Martha nee Uglow. The excellent Uglow website explains why Uglow family members chose South East Wisconsin as a destination in the USA. It should be noted that Waukesha County where Daniel lived is in South East Wisconsin and is bordered on the West with Jefferson County, a favourite destination with the Uglows.
Daniel next appears on a list dated 3rd June 1863 of persons subject to do military duty. This shows Daniel at the same location as the 1860 census but with details recorded correctly - Daniel TREASE age 40 born England. By then the American Civil War has been raging for 2 years. There is much fascinating information about Wisconsin and the Civil war to be found on the Internet on Wikipedia and the Wisconsin Historical Society. From available information it appears that Daniel was Daniel was drafted after being identified as eligible for service on the June 1863 list, but by November 12th 1863 he had failed to enlist and became classed as "a deserter". He eventually enlisted on Dec 9 1863 and fought until he was mustered out on July 3 1865. However his subsequent enlistment had not by 1867 been recognised as removing the "black mark" for late enlistment as he appears in a list, published in that year, as a deserter, although the list acknowledges errors in its compilation. The roster of civil war volunteers records Daniel TREASE as enlisting on 09Dec1863 in the Wisconsin 4th Light Artillery Battery as a private and being mustered out at Richmond, Virginia on 03Jul1865. The death and subsequent burial of Ann Graham in St John Chrysostom Cemetery took place on 11 May 1865, shortly before Daniel was mustered out, so it is unlikely he returned to Delafield.
No subsequent record of him has yet been found. In particular he has not been found on a list of Civil War pensioners which implies he had died or left the USA by pensionable age.

Daniel TREASE
Enlisted 09Dec1863 in the Wisconsin 4th Light Artillery Battery as Private.
Mustered out on 03Jul1865 at Richmond VA.1867 The "List of persons resident in the state of Wisconsin reported as deserter from the Naval or Military Service 1867" published in 1867 includes under the second list headed
"Non reporting drafted men and deserters after reporting under various drafts"
"Daniel Trease Delafield Nov 12, 1863"
The introduction states that the names of all reported as deserters from the several regiments of the State have been compared with the muster out rolls and many originally reported as deserters have been omitted from the publication. The first list contains those who were reported at the War Department as deserters and also appear on the muster out rolls. The second list contains the names of those who who were drafted and failed to report. It is accepted that many are erroneously reported.
A possible interpretation of the above is: -
Daniel was drafted after he was identified as eligible for service on June 3 1863, but by Nov 12 1863 he had failed to enlist and was then classed as "a deserter". He eventually enlisted on Dec 9 1863 and fought until he was mustered out on July 3 1865 but his subsequent enlistment had not by 1867 been recognised as removing the black mark he had for late enlistment.1862 Egloskerry. KEASE, Daniel, farmer (Postal Directory & Gazeteer of Devonshire and Cornwall - Harrison, Harrod & Co.) The above entry is thought to relate to Daniel KEAST a 65 year old famer recorded at West Downend, Egloskerry in the 1861 census.
