Frances was baptised on the 25th May 1800 in Jacobstow, Cornwall, the daughter of
William Trease and Martha Uglow
and granddaughter of
John Trease and Ann Smeeth.
For the first twenty years of her life her father worked for the Excise Service at various places in the West Country and she is thought to have travelled
around with him. When her father retired in 1820 the family settled in
Tresmeer and it was in Tresmeer Church on the 9th April
1828 that Frances married William Turner, a local schoolmaster. The witnesses were Thomas Trease, her brother, and Uriah Matthew, who also acted as
witness at her brother Thomas's wedding in the same church three years later and who may be related in some way to the Ann Matthew who married
Peter Trease in Jacobstow in 1771.
William Turner is thought to be the base son of Jane Gimblet who was baptised in Treneglos on the 10th July 1791.
His father, whose identity is currently unkown, or some other person must have ensured that William was well cared for and educated to a
level that enabled him to become a schoolmaster. Interestingly, a Rebecca Gimblett married a John Turner in Treneglos in April 1790 and her
sister Jane Gimblett (possibly mother of William Turner) married Lewis Braund at Treneglos in 1794. So far nothing more has been found about
William's ancestry.
It appears that William taught at the school in Egloskerry and that some time around 1851 he gave up teaching to run a small farm of 10
acres at Helson in Tresmeer. Around the same time, Frances's brother, Thomas Trease, became a schoolmaster at Egloskerry and may have taken over from William.
William subsequently retired to a house at Napney Lake, Warbstow where he died on the 22nd December 1857 aged 65. His funeral was held at Tresmeer churchyard five days later.
The location Knapinelake cannot be found in modern maps but appears near the centre of this 1888 map of Warbstow.
About then, Frances's sister Ann Trease came to live with Frances. Her sister Ann had been looking after their parents, William and Martha, at their house in North Tregeare, until their father William
Trease died in 1856. It is thought probable that Ann stayed on at North Tregeare, while her brother Daniel sorted out affairs, and that following
William Turner's death she came over to Warbstow to live with her recently widowed sister and her two daughters.
Frances died in Warbstow on 17th March 1867 aged 66 and four days later she was buried in Tresmeer Churchyard to join
her late husband.
Frances and William had three daughters : -

NOTE1: William states in the 1851 census that he is 59 and born in Treneglos. That fits the above baptism. As a schoolmaster, he must have been numerate and unlikely to calculate his age incorrectly if he knew for sure his date of birth. Although the age given on his death was 65 instead of 66 (which would have fitted the 1851 census data) it is thought that Frances may have simply miscalculated it. The only other appropriate William Turner is the one c. 14Apr1798 Treneglos son of John Turner and Rebecca (nee Gimblett) but by his own calculation our William would have been almost 7 by then and it is reasoned that at that age he was sufficiently old to remember well dated events in the Napoleonic Wars to make it unlikely that he could have got his age wrong by so mny years. | |
