Peter & Ann Matthews

Tentative Tree

This branch of the main family tree covers descendants of Peter Trayes and Ann Matthews who married in Jacobstow in 1771. The tree is continued to around 1900, or the first generation abroad for emigrants. The hyperlinks on descendants' names take you to a narrative telling you what is currently known about their family together with a list of data sources, photographs and any other relevant information. If no narrative exists, the hyperlink "SOURCES" takes you to a list of references for the family.

Unlike his brother Samuel, Peter was unable to write and his surname is entered into the Otterham parish registers in several different ways such as "Treas" and "Trayse". Ultimately his descendants adopted the spelling "Trayes".

The families shown on this tree are confined to those for which there is sound evidence of a relationship. There may be other families who are possibly related. Research is ongoing and the tree will be revised as new data is found. A summary of major changes is recorded in the Change History.

You should note that different interpretations of the information could place the person to whom it refers in another family and the information shown may be inaccurate e.g. it may have been transcribed incorrectly or the source document itself may simply be wrong.

INFORMATION SOURCES FAMILY OF PETER TREASE and ANN MATTHEWS

Peter Trease is thought to be the son of Peter and Joan Sharp and the son of Michael and Ruth Winter. The following Otterham burial cannot be identified but is thought to be of their first son whose baptismal record has not been found.
i. 08Dec1773 Otterham. John TREASE (COD)
The fact that no baptismal record of any subsequent son called John has been found would tend to make this less likely but :-
1. When children were not well enough to be christened in Church they were often given a private baptism at home followed by a public baptism at church when they recovered. Sometimes the private baptism was omitted from the public church register so if the child died, no baptismal record was found.
2. The Otterham parish registers were unreliable or the information available is incomplete. It is thought that the actual registers were not released by the minister concerned until recently. Similarly no baptismal record has been found for Ann Trays who almost certainly was their daughter.
3. Peter's father named his first two sons John and William in that order and this may have been a naming pattern followed by Peter.

FAMILY OF PETER TREASE and ELIZABETH VENNING / ELIZABETH DAVIES Peter is the son of Peter Trease and Ann Matthews and the grandson of Peter and Joan Sharp. His daughter Elizabeth married Francis Collins in Portsea in 1836. John Trayes (son of William Treays and Grace Govett and possibly a cousin of Peter) had married an Olive Collins in Portsea in 1826. Francis and Olive Collins may be related. Peter's son William named a son born in 1844 Francis Collins Trayes. Although Peter's son William is baptised in Launcells, Peter is at the time living in Stoke Damerel which is the dockyard area of Plymouth. Peter is described as a Pensioner at the time of his third marriage and almost certainly joined the Royal Navy. Peter TRAYS 1775 c. 11Jun1775 Otterham. FAMILY OF WILLIAM TREASE and SARAH MARTIN

William is the son of Peter Trease and Elizabeth Venning. At age 19, he was serving an apprenticeship to Thomas Shepard of Stratton. It is not known when the apprenticeship started but it was common for such apprenticeships to be arranged where children were orphaned to prevent the child becoming a cost to the parish finaces. William seems to be the only child of Peter and Elizabeth Venning. It is possible that his mother died young, possibly even in childbirth and that William stayed with his mother's family whilst they were able to care for him. he could have been apprenticed for 14 years when he was 7 and this would have enabled the costs of his upkeep to be born by the master to whom he was apprenticed.
He married Sally Martin in Exeter St. Sidwell in 1824.

So far the relationship back to William TRAYES is unclear. For Mary to be a niece, one of her parents would have to be a sibling of William.
A more remote relationship to William may be that the John, thought to be his brother, married Jane HITCHINS in 1810.
If the relationship is via her husband then : -

The following newspaper obituary written in 1904 summarises Fred's life :-
"Our Waitahuna correspondent writes: -
I regret to record the death of Mr F. Trayes which took place somewhat suddenly at his residence, Waitahuna Gully, about 3 a.m. on Monday morning (August 1st). Mr Trayes was a native of Devonshire, England, and when a very young man went out to Victoria in the early days of the goldfields in that colony. After following up gold mining for some years, he eventually left for New Zealand, where he arrived in 1863. Finding his way to the Tuapeka goldfields and still following his avocation of mining he settled down at the Blue Spur and remained there for 20 years, working part of that time in Hales' and Hindes' claim and part in another claim of which he was a shareholder. He afterwards sold his interest in the Spur claim and bought a share in Ferris and party's claim at Waitahuna Gully where he shifted with his wife and family. He retained his interest in that claim up to the time of his death. Mr Trayes was of a genial cheery nature, honest and straightforward in his dealings, and was highly respected throughout his whole neighbourhood. The deceased, who has been in failing health for over five years, was a resident of the Gully for 21 years. He was 62 years of age and leaves a wife and a married daughter to mourn their loss." (Tuapeka Times 3 hereturikoka 1904)

Fred's age at death and the description in the obituary exactly fit that of Frederick Peter Trayes, the son of William and Sally TRAYES nee MARTIN and grandson of Peter and Elizabeth TREAS nee VENNING who was baptised in St Andrew's church, Plymouth in August 1841.

Fred's brother William and his wife emigrated to Australia shortly after they married at King Charles church, Plymouth in March 1858, and it is surmised that Fred either accompanied them or followed them closely afterward.

?FAMILY OF ISAAC WHEELER and ANN TRAYS There is strong circumstantial evidence that Ann TRAYS is related to Peter and Ann Matthews probably their daughter. Her birth date fits. "Walsford" (there is no such location in Cornwall and this is thought to be Warbstow) the place of birth given in the 1851 census may fit. Her husband Isaac Wheeler was born in Treneglos, neighbouring parish to Warbstow. William TRAYS, son of Peter TRAYS who would have been her brother, stayed with her son Isaac and his wife in 1871 after his first wife, Sally died, and before he remarried. Also the Richard Treays Wheeler, William Treays Wheeler, and Peter Treays Wheeler match the names we know were given to the three sons of Peter and Ann (nee Matthews) christened at Otterham, namely, Richard in 1782, William in 1779, and Peter in 1775. There is also the possibility of a related marriage in nearby Egloskerry:- 1772 m. 27Oct1772 Egloskerry. FAMILY OF CATHARINE WHEELER and WILLIAM BRADDON This family is also being researched to establish whether Ann TRAYS is the daughter of Peter TRAYS. Catharine WHEELER is the sister of Isaac WHEELER. Mr BRADDON inherited Treglith from his father-in-law John SPETTIGUE Esq. who had purchased it from the family of SYMONS, who resided there (from the parochial history of Cornwall). If Ambrose BRADDON was the nephew of John ANSTIS then either his mother was a sister or sister-in-law or his father was a brother or brother-in-law of John ANSTIS. In the memorial inscription to his son Henry, William is given the middle name MATTHEWS implying a connection with the MATTHEWS family Catharine WHEELER 1779 c. 11Apr1779 Treneglos. FAMILY OF WILLIAM TRAYES and MARY COAD

William's death certificate gives his age as 72 which indicates he was born in the year preceding 18Jan1780. This exactly fits the baptism of William TREAS at Otterham in September 1779 son of Peter and Ann TREAS. William names his first son William almost certainly after himself and his second son Peter almost certainly after his own father. Like Peter TREAS's first son, Peter, William also became a worker for the Royal Navy.

Because of the rarity of the surname and its variants, the above is a firm indication that William is the son of Peter and Ann TREAS nee MATTHEW and grandson of Peter and Joan TREASE nee SHARP. The 1851 census states gives his place of birth as St Austell, but this data is frequently unreliable. It could be simply an enumerator error or an error on William's part - it is possible he spent much of his early life there as his father died when he was four years old.

The day after he married, one John TRAYS also married in the same church. This person is thought to be the John TRAYS who witnesses his marriage and is almost certainly closely related. One theory is that ihe could be another brother of William's for whom no other records have yet been found.

The last record we have of son Peter is that he was convicted of larceny in 1843 at Devon County Sessions on 28th February 1843. Daughter Harriett married William Shaw in Stoke Damerel/Devonport in 1844 and emigrated to Kentucky, USA sometime after 1848.

Catherine TRAYS, Stonehouse, age 41 (FMP image) This latter marriage fits John Trays the son of William of Wiveliscombe. Per census returns, his daughter Maria was born in East Stonehouse about 1812 but no baptism has been found so far. In 1826 John married Olive COLLINS in Gosport who, per brother Thomas's will, was his 2nd wife. This fits well with Catherine TRAYS who died in 1823 being his 1st wife.
