William & Grace Govett

Tentative Tree - "Treays" family

This branch of the main family tree covers descendants of William TREAYS who married Grace GOVETT in Wiveliscombe in 1778, until the first half of the 19th century, or the first generation abroad for emigrants.

William is thought to be the son of Peter and Joan baptised in St Gennys in 1745 because : -

Interestingly, a recently found reference to a John Trease living prior to 1732 close to Wiveliscombe where William Trease married in 1778 indicates that William may not be the first of his family in Somerset.

The families shown on this tree are confined to those for which there is sound evidence of a relationship. There may be other families who are possibly related. Research is ongoing and the tree will be revised as new data is found. A summary of major changes is recorded in the Change History.

Abbreviations used are listed in the Codes & Conventions page together with an explanation of how dates are handled.

You should note that different interpretations of the information could place the person to whom it refers in another family and the information shown may be inaccurate e.g. it may have been transcribed incorrectly or the source document itself may simply be wrong.

INFORMATION SOURCES

FAMILY OF WILLIAM TREASE and GRACE GOVETT

In addition to the clear link between his family and that of John Trayes and Margaret Wilkey, further circumstantial evidence points to him being the son of Peter Treise and Joan Sharp, namely:-
1. No other reference to their son William has been found, if you discount the possibility he is the William buried in Poundstock in 1772.
2. His first daughter Joan may be named after his mother. William's brother Peter named his first daughter Joan.
3. His brother John's descendants also became Excise Officers, starting with his nephew William. Interestingly his brother John married into the Smeeth family of St Gennys and Grace Govett's mother was an Ann Smith but a common name....

However, the Excise entry papers that would give details of him and his father have not been retained for this period and no conclusive evidence of his ancestry has so far come to light. If he is that William Trease, the age of 85 given on the transcription of the 1823 burial register is unexpected for a person christened in 1745 - an age of 78 or 79 would be more likely but:-
1. The transcription may be incorrect.
2. The age given may be incorrect - his wife Grace was 68 at the time and may not have known his true age.

William's first posting in the Excise Service appears to be to Bristol in May 1775. In May 1776 he became an officer of Wiveliscombe Ride and he married Grace Govett there in February 1778.

No christenings have been found between that of Nancy in 1784 and Edward in 1790, both in Wiveliscombe. One son John may have been born in this period - there may be other children as yet untraced.

The death of William's wife matches that reported in the Western Times newspaper of the 30th November 1833 - "At Kingston Cottage, Mrs Trayes, mother of Lieut. John Trays RN". John Trays, her son was then based at Portsmouth serving in the Royal Navy.

FAMILY OF JOAN(EY) TREAYS and JOHN SHEPHERD Joan(ey) TREAYS is the daughter of William Treays and Grace Govett. Apart from her marriage in Wiveliscombe, the only other reference found so far is the baptism of son John at Wiveliscombe in 1802. In 1807 a Jane Sheppard married William Arscott at Wiveliscombe - it may be that she is related to John and that her husband William is from the same Arscott family into which William Treays (Joan's brother) marries in 1809. She clearly cannot be the daughter of Susan nee Arscott who would have been in her late fifties when Mary was born. She almost certainly is the daughter of one of the children. She could be an illegitimate daughter of Henry c. 1814 but he had only just got married to someone else so that looks a bit strange. She could be the daughter of any of the daughters. The most likely mother appears to be Eliza who was unmarried and aged about 20. Eliza is at Caroline Place with Mary Ann in the 1841 and 1851 census. In 1851 she is named as Eliza Brine and has a son William Brine living with her. In 1854 she has reverted to her maiden name Treays for her (2nd) marriage to John Lewis. 1840 b. London Bells news. P8. Saturday 14Mar1857.

Cruel desertion of 2 children.
At the Westminster Police Office James Trays was brought up on a warrant charged with deserting his two motherless children. On the 2nd of September the prisoner slept at a common lodging house, 2 Ermine's Hill Westminster and there left his two children aged 8 and 5. They must have perished but for the humanity of the woman who keeps the house. She kindly supplied them with food for four or five days before taking them to St Margaret's workhouse where they have been since maintained. Prisoner, who never made any enquiry about the children, was apprehended in a state of intoxication at a public house within a few yards of the workhouse on Saturday night, when he denied his name and that he had any children. The accused said that he left the children for their own good as they were covered with sores and wanted a great deal of attention which he was unable to give them. Mr Arnold expressed his deep regret that he was unable to visit prisoner's offence with a commensurate penalty, owing to a legal difficulty which presented itself. He could, however, impose an imprisonment of one month with hard labour, which he accordingly did.

FAMILY OF THOMAS TRAYS and ? and ELIZABETH BENNETT

Thomas TREAYS is the son of William Treays and Grace Govett. He married his first wife when he was in his early twenties. Two years later he joined the Royal Navy for 21 years. In 1828, Thomas William Trays, the only surviving child from his first marriage was baptised in Stoke Damerel/ Devonport. In August 1839, four months after his term of service with the Royal Navy finished, he married for a second time to Eliza Bennett in Charles Church, Plymouth. At the time of his marriage he was working as a victualler in Cobourg Street, Plymouth. This is the same location where Mary Trayes, daughter of John Trayes was recorded as running the Cobourg Inn, and it is thought he was working with her there and learning about his retirement occupation of victualler.

After his second marriage, Thomas took over the Laira Inn at Egg Buckland where Amelia, a daughter from his second marriage, was born in 1840.

When Thomas Senior died in 1857, Thomas Junior was serving 6 years penal servitude. Henry Howe, the husband of Margaret Trayes, another daughter of John Trayes, was one of the executors of his Will. Edward Jones, the husband of Ann Trayes, another daughter of John, took over the running of the Laira Inn for a short period. They are recorded there in the 1861 census but are gone by the time of the 1871 census.

Currently it is not known for certain what happened to his wife. His son Thomas married in 1862 but died in 1869. Daughter Amelia married James Herbert in 1861 but appears to have married again in 1870 but using her single name! - further research is needed to unravel what happened to her.

CHARLES COLES, 19, and THOMAS TRAYS, 25, were charged with stealing a loaf from the shop of THOMAS WILLIAMS, Kenwyn-street, Truro.
It appeared that prisoner Coles went into the shop on the 14th of May and asked for a sixpenny loaf, which prosecutor's daughter gave him,
and asked for payment. On this he laughed at her, and went out with the loaf, and gave half of it to Trays, who was standing outside.
They were afterwards apprehended. Coles now said he did the act because they were out of work, and in a state of starvation.
Verdict, both Guilty. Two Months' hard labour.

Mr. STOKES (for Mr. FROST) conducted the prosecution. Evidence was given of the robbery, which was effected from

TO PARENTS' FAMILY TO FAMILY TREE

FAMILY OF JOHN and ? TRAYES nee ? and John and Olive TRAYES nee COLLINS

John TRAYES is the son of William Trayes and Grace Govett. His baptism has not been found but his ancestry is confirmed by his brother Thomas Trayes who refers in his will to his "deceased brother John Trays" and mentions two daughters, Maria by John's first marriage, and Olive 'White' Trayes by John's second marriage. This reference identifies our John as the John who married Olive Collins at Gosport. Also there is a connection with his mother Grace TRAYS who appears to be the "Mrs Trayes, mother of Lieut. John Trays RN" whose death "at Kingston cottage" was reported in a newspaper of November 1833. The reference almost certainly is to Grace TRAYS, as another source indicates her burial at St Marys, Redcliffe on 23November 1833. The location of Kingston cottage is thought to be in the village of Kingston which was on Portsea Island and would fit with her moving to live close to her son and her two granddaughters after her husband William died in 1823. Like his brother Thomas, John served in the Royal Navy. It may be that both of them enlisted in the Royal Navy at Plymouth.

John's first marriage is currently unclear. His daughter Maria indicates in both the 1851 and 1871 censuses that she she was born in 1811/1812 in Plymouth. In the 1851 census she gives the specific location in Plymouth as the (East) Stonehouse district. We have been unable to find a baptismal record for her in the Plymouth area but often first children are baptised in the wife's parents' parish. In 1811 a John TRAYES of the Royal Marines married a widow, Catherine HENNESSY, at Plymouth Charles in 1811 and subsequent records of him and his wife are found in East Stonehouse parish. A Catherine Trays of Stonehouse, very probably John's wife, was buried in Plymouth St George in December 1823. As John's second marriage took place in 1827, the profile of the John who married Catherine Hennessy is a good fit for our John's first wife but it does not constitute conclusive proof. One avenue of further investigation would be the Royal Marines. We do not know for sure that our John was in the Royal Marines but there are several family links to the Royal Marines : -

but these links are not conclusive.

There are other possibilities for John's first marriage, one is that he could be the John TRAYES, seaman of HMS Cosssack, who married Jane HITCHINS in Stoke Damerel in 1810 (and about whom we have no further information) but there is no evidence that the John of that marriage ever lived in East Stonehouse. Another, that was investigated and is now discounted, is that the Eliza TRAYES who purportedly married William WEBB in 1828 was his daughter. Eliza died in Victoria, Australia in 1854 before Thomas's Will of 1857 and that would explain her omission from the Will. Her death register details state she was born in Bristol, the daughter of John and Eliza TRAYS, and she was 45 years old when she died making her date of birth 1809. In both cases we are left with a puzzle as to where the two Johns of these marriages fit into the TRAYS family trees.

John married his second wife Olive COLLINS at Gosport in 1826. Interestingly Elizabeth Trays, a daughter of Peter Trays, another Royal Navy man, married Francis COLLINS at nearby Portsea in 1836. The tentative tree shows John as a cousin of Peter's but so far no link between Olive and Francis Collins has been found. If they were found to be related, it would tend to confirm the tentative tree.

FAMILY OF HENRY TRAYES and CHARLOTTE WEBBER

Henry TRAYES is the son of William Treays and Grace Govett. His grandfather, John Govett, refers in his will proved 1802 to eight daughters including Dorothy Webber. It is conjectured Charlotte, the wife of Henry, may be related to his aunt Dorothy.

Henry's death is recorded in Bedminster where his son John lived. Two entries in Bedminster Registers have not been identified:-
1. Thomas TRAYES d. 1840 (Bedminster RD Jan-Feb-Mar 1840 11 64) - too early to be one of son John's children.
2. Jane TRAYES d. 1856 (Bedminster RD Apr-May-Jun 1856 5c 485) - appears not to be the Jane born in 1850.
These may be further children of this marriage.

Newpaper Reports about incident involving Henry Webber Trayes

Two newspaper reports follow that differ slightly. The Report from the Bristol Mercury looks the better one.

Western Daily Press Thurs 12th December 1861
Disgraceful assault by an old man.

James Eales, an elderly man, was charged with assaulting a boy named Henry Webber Trayes by striking him with an umbrella. - The complainant stated that he was going home last night, when without the least provocation, the prisoner pushed his umbrella in his eye. The effect of the blow was so severe that he could not see out of his eye - In answer to Mr Williams the complainant said he never called after the prisoner - the two witnesses corroborated the complainant's statement. The prisoner, in defence, alleged the complainant called him "fish fag", "water cress" and other names of a similar character. The bench allowed the parties to retire and the affair was settled by the prisoner giving the complainant 7s 6d for the injury which he had done to his eye.

Bristol Mercury Sat 14th December 1861

James Heale, a man of apparently eccentric habits, was charged with violently assaulting a boy named Henry Webber Trayes by thrusting an umbrella in his eye and he has since been unable to open it. The prisoner who is a peripatetic dealer in fish and water cresses, asserted with much gesticulation that the complainant and other boys were in the habit of calling after him, but denied having thrust his umbrella at him, stating that as the lad passed him it fell against his eye. Two lads however deposed that he was shouting and hallowing to some persons, and that he took up his umbrella, which was lying across his basket, and made a thrust at the complainant who had given him no provocation. The Magistrates said that probably he might have inflicted greater injury upon the lad than he intended, but there could be no doubte (sic) that he had committed a grievous assault. They would give him an opportunity of retiring with the boy's friends to endeavour to compensate them, and in default of his doing so they should send him to prison for 14 days.

FAMILY OF JOHN TRAYS and MARY HUTCHINSON John TRAYES may be the son of Edward Treays and Joan Grimmett as the age and birthplace appear to match but more information is required to determine his ancestry with greater certainty. John TRAYS appears to have originally come from Bristol area and to have been an itinerant worker usually on the construction of bridges. John and Margaret had at least 3 daughters when they moved from Clifton, Bristol to Belfast. Family were still in Belfast at the time of the 1881 Census. John appears to have lived in Manchester around 1860 - there may be a TRAYS family connection with this area:- 1. James TRAYS married Jane LINDSAY on 9Nov1812 in Cathedral at Manchester. 2. On Internet a letter from Edward TRAYES a tavern keeper in Cleveland, Ohio, USA to his wife in Lancashire on 30Sep1833 is referenced. Letter describes his journey to Cleveland from New York. Observations on the 1732 Will Extract:
Many of the names also appear on the Wellington Parish Register extracts on the GENUKI website so there is a strong Wellington connection. The testator may be a brother of Joan Berry of Wellington whose 1702 Will also refers to sister Westcott (m. 01Jun1700 Wellington. Mary Berry and Henry Westcoat (parish transcript on GENUKI) and brother Walter. On this basis testator could be either Robert or Peter Berry. As the evidence below shows that Peter Berry's daughter Elizabeth married Thomas Were in 1717 and testator refers to "cousin Thomas Were" it seems most likely that the testator is Robert Berry.

The book "The Woollen Manufacture at Wellington" by Joseph Hyland Fox published in 1914 uses as a base the Wellington Wool Factory of "Thomas and Elizabeth Were and Sons" and the text throws a little light on the above wills and the strong non-conformist tradition of at least one of the Berry family : - and also references members of the Winter family of Wellington who also appear to have been Friends/Quakers and are numerous in the Wellington parish transcripts on GENUKI. In 1703 Michael Trease married Ruth Winter in North Petherwin. She was not from a local family so could have come from Somerset but there is no factual evidence of this so it should be considered merely as one of many possibilities. : - In the 1851 census, Jane Treays, daughter of Peter Treise and Margaret Oliver, appears in Plymouth in the household of Nicholas Were, a solicitor born in Wellington and a relative of Thomas Were mentioned above.

Conclusions
The only definite fact is that a person named John Trease was aged over 21 when the Will affirmed in 1732 was drawn up. He was probably working in the clothing or an associated industry in the Wellington area of Somerset.

Stamshaw House Lunatic Asylum

A few ladies of unsound mind can be accommodated in the above establishment which from its situation in a healthy part of the County of Hants, offers peculier advantages. The limited number of patients admitted allows each to enjoy the greatest domestic comfort, and most perfect peace and tranquillity, without the appearance of surveillance which in most Institutions is so detrimental to the recovery of the patients. The gardens are extensive and well calculated for the amusement and relaxation of the inmates. The apartments are large, lofty, and well ventilated, being adapted to all classes. The whole establishment is conducted with the greatest liberality and is under the immediate superintendence of a Physician.
In the treatment of patients, a course of uniform kindness and tenderness is pursued, together with a well regulated system of exercise, diet, amusement and occupation according to the varied circumstances of each individual case will admit: the recovery of the Insane being the great aim of the Asylum.
The most flattering testimonials, both from the Magistrates of the county and of the borough of Portsmouth can be obtained.
There are also vacancies for a few Pauper Lunatics in a Building immediately adjoining the above.
Address (if by letter, postpaid) to Mrs Trayes or to John J Tate M.D., at the Asylum
