This branch covers descendants of John TRAYES, who married Margaret Wilkey in Stoke Damerel in 1806. Hyperlinks on descendants' names take you to what is currently known about their family together with a list of data sources, photographs and any other relevant information.
Trees drawn up following earlier research possibly done in North America in the 1980/90s (when facilities were so much more restricted than now) and displayed on this website gave the impression that there was no doubt that the John Trayes who married Margaret Wilkey was John Trayes christened in St Teath in 1775, the son of John and Margaret LANG. However research done in 2014 casts doubt on this and indicates that he is more likely to be John Trayes christened in St Gennys in 1774 the son of John and Ann SMEETH, who disappears from records in St Gennys when he was about 20. Until further research has been carried out to resolve this, the marriage currently appears on the family trees of both Johns preceded by a "?" to indicate uncertainty.
The history of John and Margaret after their marriage seems uncontentious. Family legend was that John "was a mariner who fought in the Napoleonic wars and came back to Devonport to work in the boatworks." Research shows that John was indeed a mariner when he married, later became a shipwright, and then tried his hand, unsuccessfully, at running an Inn.
In addition to the specific research into the background of John who married Margaret Wilkey mentioned above, research is ongoing into all other parts of this tree which will be revised as new data is found. The facts recorded below in bold were unknown when the ancestry of John TRAYES who married Margaret WILKEY in 1806 was originally decided : -
- He marked the marriage register. It is highly unlikely that the heir of John Trays of St Teath had not been taught to sign his own name.
- His age was given as 72 when he died on 07Feb1846 so,if correct, he was born between 07Feb1773 and 07Feb1774.
- His sons were William, John, Richard, Samuel and Peter.
- Thomas TRAYES s/o William TREAYS of Wiveliscombe (s/o Peter TREISE of St Gennys) lived at the Inn run by John's daughter Margaret.
- His daughter Margaret's husband was executor of the Will of the said Thomas TRAYES.
- His daughter Ann and her husband Edward JONES took over Laira Inn, after Thomas TRAYES, the former proprietor, died.
- His wife Margaret became a dairy farmer before retiring to a home for deceased mariners in Plymouth.
- His family moved in the same circles as descendants of the Trayes families of St Gennys. For example, in 1858 Mary DARTON, widow of William DARTON, married William TRAYES in Plymouth, a descendant of Peter of St Gennys. In 1865, after John's daughter Ann and her husband moved to London, Ann's daughter Emily married Samuel, brother of William DARTON in Limehouse, London.
The facts regarding JOHN TRAYES of St Teath are: -
- His brother and sister Jennifer both signed their marriage registers. It seems unlikely that, as the eldest son and heir to his father's business, he would not have been taught to sign his own name, particularly as his brother and sister could.
- He was christened on 28Feb1775 which makes it likely that he was born after 07Feb1774 and thus would have been 71 if he died on 07Feb1846 (but ages were often incorrectly stated in those times).
- The St Teath family use the christian names John, William, and Stephen but have no tradition of using Richard, Samuel, and Peter.
- No connections between his family and John Trayes, who married Margaret Wilkey, have been found whereas many connections to the St Gennys Trayes family have been found.
- The Thomas Trayes who became closely involved with the John who married Margaret Wilkey was from the St Gennys family not the St Teath family.
- After John's baptism, we have no further known record of him. The original assertion that the John who marked the marriage register, when he married Margaret in 1805 was the same John who signed the St Teath registers in 1802 and 1803 is suspect particularly as his father, who could sign, was alive.
If he died before before his father made his will of 06May1805, he possibly died young. He may have been buried on 02Dec1778. His grandfather, to whom this burial is currently attributed, is the more likely of the two to be buried elsewhere, but no appropriate burial has been located.
The facts regarding JOHN TRAYES of St Gennys are: -
- He was christened on the 17Apr1774 which exactly fits with him being born between 07Feb1773 and 07Feb1774.
- His father died late in 1774. He was a second son and his mother remarried and had at least another son by her second marriage. His older sister Ann was unable to read and write and it is thought his childhood background would lead to him having little education.
- The last known record of him is a 1794 entry in the St Gennys churchwarden accounts, when he was 20 and at a likely age for him to escape a poor existence as an agricultural labourer.
- His grandfather named his sons John, William, Peter, Richard, Samuel, & Michael which are identical to the names used by the John who married in 1806, given that he had one son less, so Michael was not used.
- The Thomas Trayes, who became closely involved with John & Margaret Wilkey's family, was his cousin, son of uncle William, born St Gennys in 1745.
- While Margaret TRAYES nee WILKEY was dairy farming in Plymouth, so was Samuel TREAYS, another cousin of John's. Samuel also worked in the Plymouth dockyards at the same time as her husband and was one of the first of the family to do so.
- His cousin, William TRAYES married Maria DARTON, sister-in-law to Samuel DARTON who married the daughter of John & Margaret's daughter Ann.
The copy below is from the 6th May 1805 when he signed his Will.

This signature will be compared with those on the St Teath marriage register. If they happen to be different, the probability is that John Trayes, the son, was still alive in St Teath for those marriages.

Thomas did not retire from the RN until 1839. Could Mary have been looking after the Inn for him after his wife Charity died? She seems very young at 23 to undertake running an Inn but may be it was hers and Thomas got involved later. We can speculate endlessly on this - key thing is that Mary and her sisters were closely linked to Thomas. Like their father John's wife, Thomas's wife also appears to be from the Barnstaple area as he married her in Kings Nympton. Elizabeth TRAYES No appropriate entry for her maiden name can be found on the 1851 census in any location so she may have married or died. No appropriate record of her death has been found but an appropriate 1844 marriage register entry exists with 4 possible husbands. One of these is Hugh HAMMOND whose wife Elizabeth, on the 1851 census, matches our Elizabeth's age and place of birth. The 1854 birth registration of William Trayes HAMMOND confirms the HAMMOND/TRAYES marriage. The 1851 census shows 4 children by Hugh's marriage to Elizabeth plus a daughter Emmeline born in Scotland before their marriage. It is assumed that Hugh had a previous marriage and his first wife died but it may simply be that the relationship "daughter" is incorrectly recorded. The family appear to split and nobody has been definitely identified in the 1861 census. The most likely scenario is that the Hugh Glanville HAMMOND who died in 1859 is the father. The following gravestone rules out the burial of this Elizabeth HAMMOND who died in the area before the 1861 census as being the mother : - "Elizabeth Mary Hammond , wife of James Hammond , 20 October 1860, aged 63 years, Stoke Damerel Church burial ground, Plymouth." 1815 c. 05Mar1815 Stoke Damerel. Ann TRAYES is the daughter of John and Margaret and, subject to final research, thought to be the granddaughter of John and Ann SMEETH. After Thomas TRAYES died, she and her husband took over his Inn for a while before moving to the London Docks area, where her daughter married Samuel DARTON who, almost certainly is the brother of William DARTON whose widow married William TRAYES.

The following is additional research carried out for the TREASE website.
This research shows that the William DARTON who married Mary HEAD in 1853 was the son of Richard & Jane DARTON and not the brother of Samuel. It now seems almost certain that the William DARTON who married Mary LAPTHORNE in 1853 was Samuel's brother.

Background to the DARTON family
This Website states that the William DARTON who married Mary Maria LAPTHORNE was the brother of Samuel Brace DARTON who married Emily JONES/ TRAYES. Although it does not give sources, it does give the date of William's marriage to Mary LAPTHORNE implying that either the marriage certificate or parish register entry had been examined, both of which should state William's father. Neither of these has been examined by researchers for our website but other research, described below, makes it almost certain that this William was Samuel's brother. A further possible connection is that Samuel's first wife Elizabeth OLIVER may be related to the Margaret OLIVER who married Peter TREAYS in 1814.

FAMILY of John and Jane TRAYES nee BROOKE
Shortly after he married, John moved to Southwark area of London. There are no known relatives in that area but Southwark was a centre of hat making and may have offered John better career prospects.
He went to Scotland with his family prior to 1840 and was a member of St Cuthberts Church in Edinburgh.
John and Jane give most of their sons with the middle name "Brooke" but they name one of their sons "William Henry Trayes". This son is baptised in the church of St Cuthberts in Edinburgh in 1840. In the same church 5 years later, another William Henry Trays, who was
born ,like John in Plymouth,in 1825 and who was the son of Andrew, a baker, baptises his first son "William Henry Trays".
It may be a coincidence but it seems probable that the two fathers both from Plymouth, both with the same surname, and both moving to Edinburgh within a few years
of one another and both using the same church and both giving their sons identical names were at least friends with each other, if not in
some way related.
In 1852 the family emigrated to Montreal, Quebec, Canada where John died in December 1864. Sometime after his death, possibly around 1858, the family moved to Boston, Massachusetts, USA, but son John subsequently moved back to Port Hope, Ontario in 1862

WILLIAM FRANCIS TRAYES
(Biographical Sketches of Leading Citizens of Houghton, Baraga and Marquette COUNTIES - Michigan
Biographical Publishing Company, Chicago, Illinois, 1903)
William F. Trayes, vice-president of the Hancock Evening Journal Company, and managing editor of the newspaper, received his early training in the office of his father, the late J. B. Trayes, who was editor and proprietor of the Daily and Weekly Times of Port Hope, Province of Ontario, and editor and publisher of the Canadian Craftsman, the leading Masonic paper of the Province.
On the death of his father, William F. Trayes became editor and manager of the Port Hope Times. He published the Times successfully for four years, and then sold the newspaper and went to Montreal, where he accepted the position of city editor of the Montreal Witness, a journal which ranks first among the newspapers of Canada. He succeeded in making his mark in this position, and, after two years on the Montreal Witness, resigned to become a free lance in the newspaper field. As a special correspondent he represented at various times the Montreal Star, the Toronto Mail, the Toronto Globe and the Associated Press, and became one of the best known newspaper men in the Dominion.
After coming to the United States Mr. Trayes was engaged as editor of Campbell's Illustrated Journal, a monthly magazine published in Chicago, which position he resigned to enter the newspaper field in Hancock, Michigan.

Sunday November 27, 1938) I am a former pupil of Public School 12 and can recall Dr. Cruickshank, Miss Ackerman, Miss Lilly and Miss Beyer. Well do I remember the days we went sleighing on the hills in Fort Green Park. Who recalls Officer Kelly who used to chase us kids over the wall? Civil War veterans used to congregate in the park each Sunday and swap yarns about their days in battle. Who remembers the old 14th Regiment Armory at N. Portland Ave. and Auburn Place and the old Clermont skating rink? And who could forget the days when we bought 2 cents worth of broken pie at Coby's pie bakery on Cumberland St. and when the day's fun was over we went to bed at the sound of the bugle in the Navy Yard? I ask you who could forget those days? Mitchel's candy store was on Park Ave. near Clermont Ave. Have often wondered what's become of the boys of that old neighbourhood - the only one I've met in recent years is Bill Boylhart, who used to live on Adelphi St. CHARLES A. Weren't you one of the kids in the old Eagle Office on lower Fulton Street? And didn't you have a sister employed in the proof room. And did she have pulchritude plus? I'll say she did. All we youths were goofy with admiration for her. As I recall she was removed from our midst via the "Middle Aisle" by my old friend and neighbour Henry DAISLEY. Now rests beneath the sod;
Her sufferings all are o'er, --her prayer

Her faith was firm and whole;
At last her weary spirit prays, -

An Interesting Story
Massachusetts (USA) mail despatch dated June 30th says:
Mrs Jane Trayes of Lake View, Foxboro, Massachusetts is quietly celebrating her 90th birthday today. Mrs Trayes is a native of Barnstaple Devonshire England and was borne (sic) on June 30th 1809. She retained her maiden name Jane Brooks till twenty two years of age, when she married Mr John Trayes, a hatter. Soon after their marriage Mr and Mrs Trayes went to Edinburgh where they resided for a number of years and in 1852 they removed to Montreal Canada. There were eight children, four girls and four boys and with the exeption of one, all the latter served apprenticeship at the printing trade. J.R.Trayes eventually established the "Port Hope Times" daily and weekly. Of 25 grandchildren born 19 survive, 13 being married and there are 16 great-grandchildren. At the age of 90 Mrs Trayes is able to sew and does the finest work without the aid of spectacles. Her husband died in 1854 at the age of 47."
RETURN TO FAMILY OF JOHN and JANE TRAYES
A few of the many friends and relatlves of Mrs. Jane Trayes, now in her 93rd year, gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Murray, 204 Franklin street, Tuesday evening, where she is making her annual visit of two or three weeks, and receiving her numerous friends, who are pleased to call and extend congratulations. Mrs. Trayes retains all her faculties and is a most interesting conversationalist. Until this summer she has spent her time in making the finest of lace work and knitting. Her eyes are not strong enough to permit the strain, in the estimation of her relatives, who, though they take great pride in the exhibition of fine lace handkerchiefs, etc., will not permit her to indulge in that pastime. She does, however read the daily papers, and keeps well posted on current events. Mrs. George Murray, her eldest daughter, was present with her husband and their family of ten. Of the ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren and others present, none were more pleased with the evening's entertainment than "Grandma Trayes," as she is fondly called by all who know her. After toasts to her health and long life, the entire party indulged in a spread of fancy ices and fruits. Mrs. Trayes has three sons and two daughters, all of whom are married and have families. There are 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren living.
Cambridge Tribune, Volume XXIV, Number 23, 10 August 1901
Nearly 95 Years of Age.
"Grandma" Trayes, as she is familiarly known, gave a reception to about two score relatives and friends, Tuesday evening, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Murray, 204 Franklin street. Mrs. Trayes will be 96, next month. She has lived at Winthrop the past winter, and yesterday, returned to her home in Foxhoro. For years she has resided with her son, William H. Traves and once or twice a year visits her relatives in Cambridge for a few weeks.
Untll the past year Mrs. Trayes has been a constant reader, and has been an adept in fine lace work. On account of failing sight, she has been obliged to discontinue this during the past year. Otherwise, she retains all her
faculties. She has a retentive memory and is an entertaining conversationalist and converses on topics of interest many years ago. She has 19 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
The evening's entertainment consisted of vocal selections by William W. Hicks and T. Fred Murray, readings by Miss Fern Foster, and piano solos by Miss Lottie Weston and Miss Sadie Murray. Refreshments completed the programme and the affair was most enjoyable.

John Brook Trayes of the Port Hope Times, Dead
Port Hope, Oct 14
The journalists and the masonic fraternity of Canada will be shocked to learn of the death of one of their oldest and most esteemed associates, John Brook Trayes, editor of the Port Hope Times. This event occurred to-day, after a shortened violent attack of congestion of the lungs. Deceased was a native of Edinburg, Scotland, where he was born in 1842. Ten years later he came to Canada with his parents, who settled in Montreal. At the age of 11 years he entered the office of the Montreal Pilot, where he mastered every branch of the trade. in 1862 he came to Port Hope to accept the foremanship in the British Canadian, established in that year. Five years later he purchased the paper and changed its name to that it now bears. He had been connected with the Canadian Press Association for many years. He was elected a member of the executive committee in 1877, and the offices of vice-president, second and first, to that of president in 1880. He had since been on the executive committee, and was for several years secretary. Mr Trayes was one of the most popular residents of Port Hope, and was a prominent member of many societies. He held the honorary position of Past District Deputy Grand Master of the Masonic Fraternity, and was first Noble Grand of Durham Lodge, I. O. O. F. He was also first master workman of Safety Lodge, A. O. U. W., and a prominent member of the Royal Arcanum. The deceased leaves a wife and two children, Mrs J. Eudore Painchaud, of Montreal, and W.F. Trayes of this town. His remains will be buried on Sunday next with Masonic honours.
