Will of William Traies, gentleman of Crediton, 1812

I William Traies of Crediton in the County of Devon Gentleman do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament as follows (that is to say) First I give to my son John Traies William Drake of Crediton aforesaid Miller and James Bucknell of the same Clock and Watch Maker their Executors Administrators and assigns the sum of Three hundred pounds of lawful british money to be paid to them at the end of the three calendar months next after my decease upon the Trusts following, that is to say, upon trust that they the said trustees and the survivor or survivors of them and the executors and administrators of such survivor shall and do immediately on receipt thereof lay out and invest the same in the purchase of stock in some or one of the Public Funds or Government Securities or Bond and place out the same at Interest on mortgage in said Securiy and alter and vary such Securities from time to time to others of the like nature as occasion may require or they the said Trustees shall think fit and shall and do pay the Interest Dividends and Profits thereof
to my daughter Mary (the wife of William Jackman) for her own use ...

... until my four grandchildren William Traies Elizabeth Traies Mary Traies Mellony Traies (the children of my said late deceased son James Traies) shall attain their respective ages following (that is to say) the said William Elizabeth and Mary the age of twenty four years and the said Mellony the age of twenty one years
... in case my said Grandson William Traies shall claim or become entitled to certain lands and hereditaments called the Globe Inn situate and lying at Dartmouth in the said County of Devon
Also I give to my said son John Traies the use but not the absolute property of my portrait during his life and after his death in case my said daughter Jackman shall be then living and shall not have had another portrait or a copy thereof drawn, then I give the use but not the absolute property thereof to my said daughter Jackman for her life and after her decease or in case she should have had another or such copy copy as aforesaid in the lifetime of my said son John then from and immediately after the decease of my said son John I give the absolute property thereof to the oldest son of my said son John which shall be then living

Appeared personally Jane Kerslake the wife of William Kerslake of the City of Exeter Tinplateworker and Susannah Kerslake of the said City Spinster and made oath that they know and were well acquainted with William Traies late of Crediton in the County of Devon Gentleman deceased and also with the manner and character of handwriting and subscription having frequently seen him write and also write and subscribe his name …. a Codicil to the last Will and Testament .. bearing date Novr. 18. 1810 …
Proved at London with a Codicil 24th October 1812 before the judge by the oath of John Traies the son of the deceased and sole executor to whom administration was granted having been first sworn ..

NOTE: The portrait is thought to be the one below currently (year 2015) in the Sheffield Museums collection.
This is by the portrait painter Lemuel Francis Abbott (1760 - 1803) and purports to be of William Traies, father of the artist.
For various reasons it is more likely to be of William Traies of this Will. It is on the Art Detective's website and we will submit full reasons why it is unlikely to be a portrait of the father of William Traies, the artist, in due course.
