Traies Branch - William and Mary BOND | List of Changes | Codes & Conventions |
This page shows a tentative family tree based on evidence currently available.
The information known about each family and the source from which it has been derived can be found by activating the
link "SOURCES" underneath the relevant family on the tree. The information was originally posted to support
ROOTSCHAT "interactive" research
into James Traies born 1785 but may interest others. This branch of the family appears to have died out in the male line with the death of Samuel Traies at Gravesend in 1857.
The information is posted to support the ROOTSCHAT "interactive" research into James Traies born 1785 but may be of interest to others.
Please also note there is no firm evidence that the TRAIES family is related to the TREASE/TREAYS/TRAYES families on the main website.
Research is ongoing. The tree will be changed as more information comes to light and significant changes recorded in the Change History page.
Details of other Trease families being researched can be seen on the Research tab on the main menu bar above.
You should note that different interpretations of the information could place the person to whom it refers in another family and the information shown may be
inaccurate e.g. it may have been transcribed incorrectly or the source document itself may simply be wrong.
Dates and abbreviations are explained on the Codes & Conventions page

WILLIAM TRAIES and MARY nee BOND
The William who married Mary BOND died on the 14th April 1812 and both his gravestone and his burial register entry state he was 84 when he died. That age exactly fits the 1728 baptismal record of William son of John and Sarah. The possibility that he is the son of John and Sarah is explored in the explanatory notes to Generation 18 of the family tree.
Documents at the National Archives in Kew concern a 1797 claim made by William TRAIES against Abraham WIVELL (C 12/952/46) a fellow executor of his brother John's Will.
Abraham the executor was the uncle of Abraham Wivell, artist, referred to in this obituary which also mentions shoemaking. Abraham's Will dated 12th January 1828 is also at Kew PROB 11/1736.

Death of a Veteran Reformer
- Mr John TRAIES the well known shoemaker died a few days since aged 85. The deceased was a staunch supporter of the present Earl Fortescue, when he contested the County against the Rolle interest in 1816, 1818, 1820, and 1830. In 1820 when his Lordhip headed the Poll, the deceased who was then rather advanced in years made extraordinary efforts to push through the crowd in order that he might give the first vote in the booth allotted for the freeholders of the Crediton Hundred, on reaching the entrance of which he saw the four leading tory gentlemen of the neighbourhood in front of him who dubtless had stationed themselves there to win over the timid and wavering (by the bye we may here observe tempora mutantur) but Mr TRAISE (sic) in answer to the usual question, shouted aloud "For Lord Ebrington, a plumper: there gentlemen, the first blow is half the battle." Mr Traies had the gratification of fnding that the great majority of the Crediton men, voted for his favourite candidate, notwithstanding the great influence brought to bear against them.

Currently it is thought that this apprenticeship was to John TRAIES who married Sarah PIDLER in 1741 but it could also relate to his son, John, who appears to have finished his own apprenticeship in the summer of 1753. Thomas may have been about 14 when he became apprenticed to John so would have been born about 1743. There are quite a few Thomas TOSERs born in the area about that time e.g.

Jane TOSER is the Jane COUCH who married Richard TOSER in 1756 and was born in 1720, the daughter of Jane & Digory COUCH.
Most persons in her Will are her nieces and nephews on the COUCH side. The numerous families involved are shown below. Their names are highlighted in Italics if they are beneficiaries of her Will including William Couch JACKMAN who married Mary TRAIES.
The JACKMAN connection is of particular interest. Are the JACKMAN's in the Will related to Catherine JACKMAN who married Andrew TREAYS in Plympton St Mary in 1798. Andrew's family came from the Callington area.
Jane TOSER's burial has not yet been found but she is possibly buried in Devon in the same grave as her husband.

Henrietta Louisa KIRBY
On 11Jan1995 Joan Leggett wrote that Henrietta Louisa KIRBY was sister to Charles Kirby and Elizabeth Grace KIRBY.
Her father was Charles KIRBY of Bath.
Her sister Elizabeth Grace KIRBY married William VANDERSTEGEN in 1807 and had children William Henry, born in 1808 and Louisa, who married the Rev. Arthur Nugent BUCKERIDGE of Bath.
Her brother Charles KIRBY married Ann GORST in St Vincent and died there on the 28May1845. He had many children including Ann KIRBY baptised in 1830, who married a William THOMSON. In his Will Charles left bequests to Louisa and Mary TRAIES, the daughters of his sister Henrietta Louisa.
A Rootsweb chat which subsequently appeared on the Internet (and is now no longer active) suggested that Charles KIRBY and his brother Rowland came from Bath, Somerset and became plantation owners in the West Indies and Charles's daughter Henrietta Louisa KIRBY died aged 15 while attending school in the UK. It seems that after James and Elizabeth married, they emigrated to the United States where they had one surviving child, Elizabeth, born in Baltimore about 1820.
James died some time between then and 1843 when his father wrote his will.
The details below indicate that his wife Elizabeth remarried to John Morgan but the record of their marriage has not been found.
They appear to have had three girls - the oldest of whom was born in 1834.
It is not clear where James's wife was between 1820 and 1834.
The marriage of a John Morgan to an Elizabeth Williams on 10th June 1833 in Kington Herefordhire (about 7 miles from Hay) may be relevant
but MORGAN and WILLIAMS are both very common names, particularly in Wales. If it is our Elizabeth then it would indicate that between 1820 and 1834
she remarried to a Williams who also died young. Interestingly her daughter Elizabeth married the artist Frederick Williams.
The 1851 census clearly records that her daughter Elizabeth TRAIES was a step sister of Louisa, Hepzibah, and Jemima MORGAN and confirms that her mother had remarried to a John MORGAN.

Southampton Hampshire Elizabeth Williams age 74 (Southampton RD Oct-Nov-Dec 1894 2c 22) [possible death - there are others - will?] Sp. Charles Frederick WILLIAMS Charles Frederick Williams was born in the town of Ottery St Mary in Devon. He showed proficiency in drawing at an early age and became a pupil of the watercolourist David Cox (1783-1859). Williams became friends with Cox and accompanied him on sketching tours of North Wales. Williams spent most of his life in the West Country, teaching and producing topographical scenes. Despite ill-health, Williams worked out of doors and based his art on careful observation and accurate drawing. He became a respected provincial artist and exhibited at the Royal Academy. The noted Victorian art critic John Ruskin said of his drawings: "They are full of beauty and feeling". Williams also lived in Southampton, staying in the eastern suburb of Bitterne for some 25 years. He made many watercolours of local scenes. (Southampton City Art Gallery) David Cox appears to have been an important artist of his time. For some time he was drawing master at a Miss Crouchers Girls School in Hereford which is near Hay on Wye. The gallery has provided brief details of Charles Frederick Williams career:- - He held an appointment as Drawing Master at Dr Ridgeway's School. - He appears to have left Exeter in 1845 and moved to London. - He became a pupil and favourite pupil of David Cox and they were constant companions on sketching tours of North Wales. - Around 1853 he originated the plan of 'Art Teaching by Correspondence. His letters "were considerably enhanced in value and interest by the help of his accomplished and devoted wife ..." (no name or date of marriage, death etc. given nor any mention of Elizabeth Traies) - At some undated date/period he appears to have had a studio at 'The Dolphin' in Beer in Devon which he shared with Mr Hamish Macallum (1870s and 1880s from dates of his paintings which are often only dated by the decade rather than the year). 1810 b. The catalogue of the Williams Bequest was dated May 1985 and was written by John Willis Esq. The bequest included 123 of CFW's works dating from about 1840 to 1887 given to the art gallery by Elizabeth's step sister Lucy Fellows and her husband. Many of the pictures seem to have been painted in Wales possibly on visits to Elizabeth's step sister's family. Current works on loan to gallery include a further 42 works on loan from others. He held an appointment as Drawing Master at Dr Ridgeway's School.
