Traies Family of Crediton

This part of the website was originally posted to support ROOTSCHAT "interactive" research into James Traies born 1785. Uncertainties prohibit the creation of a definitive family tree for the early Traies families of Crediton. The links shown between the families are the "best fit" with information currently available and should be read in conjunction with the explanatory notes. Activate the links labelled "SOURCES" underneath each family on the tree to examine the data currently available. Research is ongoing so the data and the tree are subject to change, the most significant of which appear in the list of changes.

So far, conclusive evidence that these TRAIES families are related to persons on the main TREASE family tree is lacking. However the circumstantial evidence from continuity of Christian names and similarity of the surnames plus the disappearance of some 'Treases' with those Christian names from North Petherwin (then in Devon, now in Cornwall) and the appearance of similarly named 'Trease/later Traies' in Crediton, Devon together with associations with the Wivell family from Launceston are thought to indicate that such a link is likely. To date, however, it remains unproven.

Please note that different interpretations of the information could place the person to whom it refers in another family and the information shown may be inaccurate e.g. it may have been transcribed incorrectly or the source document itself may simply be wrong.

Explanatory Notes - Generations 14, 15, and 16

Apart from the uncertainty regarding the ancestors of the first Treases to appear in Crediton, these three generations present no further obvious challenges. Generation 16 consists of the children of John and Lydia and the only John we know of, namely John, the son of Samuel, fits the bill of the John who married Lidia Kerswill in 1681.

Generation 14

  1. Richard and Samuel TREASE were possibly brothers

Richard and Samuel may have been brothers as they marry within seven years of each other.

  2. They possibly had a further married sister

The possibility of a further married sister arises from the following entries in the Crediton burial register: -
     	i. 25Feb1711 Wid BABB age 84) yrs old and	(FMP img)
    	i. 25Feb1711 Wid TREASE age 86) sisters in law.

"Wid TREASE" is thought to be Rebecca PRISE who married Samuel TREASE in 1654, 57 years earlier so would have been about 29 when she married and born about 1625. Rebecca's burial has not otherwise been found. For Mrs BABB to be her sister in law, the simplest scenario is that Samuel had a sister, name currently unknown, who married a BABB. The other scenario is that Samuel's wife had a brother who died and whose wife remarried to a BABB, but the joint burial suggests a stronger bond or relationship than would normally arise in that scenario. It is also just conceivable, but unlikely, that this burial refers not to this Mrs TREASE but to the wife of Richard TREASE who married in 1647.
No marriage of a TREASE to a BABB has ever been found. The Crediton baptismal register records children of John and Agnes BABB starting in 1634 with John (who may be the John BABB buried in 1702). The following Crediton BABB references in the Devon Wills list may be relevant: -

1645	John BAB Crediton	Admon	le	ECCE	FRYB	A.
1703 John BABB Crediton. Court record re Will, Admon, or inventory (DEV O ab MOGT Series 2, p98)
1709	William BABB Crediton. (DEV W le ECCE FR7B t)

The abstract for the 1703 reference has not yet been examined.

  3. Richard and Samuel may have come to Crediton from Pattacott, North Petherwin (then in Devon, now in Cornwall)

Sons Richard and Samuel are named in the 1645 Will of Michael Trease of North Petherwin but no further trace of them in that area can be found. Seven persons are listed in the 1641 Protestation return for Pattacott, North Petherwin - Michael TREASE senior and junior and three WYVELLS including Degory, who goes on to witness Michael Trease's 1645 Will and jointly perform the inventory. Similarly, close links exist between the TRAIES family from Crediton and a WYVELL family from Launceston, Cornwall, which is close to North Petherwin, as shown by this Traies Will in which Abraham Wyvell is executor.

  4. No further trace of Richard's family after baptism of Marie in 1650

The family of Richard and Embling disappears without trace. No further baptismal nor burials records have been found in the Crediton area. The family may have died out or have moved elsewhere but no further records have been found.

Generation 15

  1. The Samuel who marries Martha BACK appears to be the Samuel baptised in 1656

Samuel, the son of Samuel, is of an appropriate age, 24, for marrying Martha BACK in 1680 and is the only Samuel we know of in the area.

  2. The John who marries Lidia KERWSILL appears to be the John baptised in 1658

Similarly, John, the son of Samuel, is an appropriate age, 23, for marrying Lidia KERSWILL in 1681 and is the only John we know of in the area.

  3. No further trace of two of Samuel's children after their baptism

Two children of Samuel and Rebecca disappear without trace - the unnamed child born in 1661 whom we can probably safely assume was baptised in a hurry because he/she was thought unlikely to survive and George born in 1664. The William baptised in 1670 must have died before his brother William was baptised in 1673 but his burial record has not been found.

Generation 16

The only children we have a record of in this generation are those of John and Lidia. The Crediton marriages of Samuel 1717, John 1724, and William 1721 exactly correspond with their three surviving sons but :-

Explanatory Notes - Generation 17 & 18

  1. Two entries in baptismal register refer to Traies families of whom we have no record

Two baptismal entries do not match the marriages of Samuel, John and William, and the parents' marriages have not been found : - Possible explanations are :-
For the purpose of this tree it has been decided to leave these entries as undecided.

  2. Baptismal record for John son of John & Sarah is missing

No baptismal record has been found for John son of John TRAIES who married Sarah PIDLAR in 1724, but a "John son of John TRAIES" was apprenticed to a cordwainer in Exeter in 1741, indicating John was probably born about 1727 as 14 was a normal age for an apprenticeship. This John appears to be the same John, cordwainer, who in his Will of 1787 appoints his brother William, husband of Mary BOND, as his executor and makes bequests to nephews whose descriptions match those of the children of the Samuel who marries Elizabeth CHUBB in 1755.

  3. Baptismal record for Samuel son of Samuel & Elizabeth is missing

No baptismal record has been found for Samuel son of Samuel TRAIES who married Elizabeth CREESE in 1717, but "Samuel TRAISE junior" was witness in a 1753 Court Case regarding shoes stolen from "Samuel TRAISE senior of Crediton".

  4. William (m1751 Rebecca PERKINS) is thought to be the same William (m1721 Mary RAWLING) and has no surviving sons

In his 1768 Will, William makes bequests to brother Samuel's son William or, should he die, brother Samuel's son Samuel. Of the three Samuel TRAIES families in the locality: -

    1. William can't be brother of Samuel (m1755 Elizabeth CHUBB) as this Samuel died in 1766, 2 years before William made his Will, and John Traies's 1787 Will (point 2 above) already indicates that this Samuel's brother is William (m1759 Mary BOND).

    2. William is unlikely to be brother of Samuel (m1749 Willmet BOWDEN) because: -
      • This Samuel's children are minors and the Will omits to state this.
      • Their sequence of birth does not match the order of inheritance in the Will - Samuel (c1754), John (c1760), William (c1763) - and all three appear alive in 1768, when the Will was made.
      • There is no baptismal record for a son William.

    3. William could be brother to Samuel & Elizabeth CREESE (m1717) but they have no baptisms recorded for sons named William and Samuel. As indicated in point 3, Samuel TRAISE junior did exist. He also appears of the right age for marrying Willmet BOWDEN in 1749. However we can find no trace of the other son William but he could, of course, have left the area like John TRAIES (m1760 Mary PORTER) and Martha TRAIES, who would be his sister.
Further circumstantial evidence of William (m1751 Rebecca PERKINS) being of the same generation as Samuel (m1717 Elizabeth CREESE) is : -
      • Mary, the wife of William (m1721 Mary RAWLING) was pronounced guilty in a 1748 Court Case and is thought to be the Mary TRAIES buried in 1749. This is compatible with William remarrying in 1751 but there is an inconsistency as the occupation to the William in the DRO index to the case is given as "tailor" rather than "cordwainer'.
      • Rebecca outlived William by almost 50 years indicating she was considerably younger than him.
      • His first marriage appears heirless and could explain why he sought a younger wife who could have children.
      • In 1765 he took over a substantial property implying that he had accumulated wealth and therefore was an older man.
If the second marriage is not of the same William and the earlier points are correct, there is no other TRAIES family left.

Subsequent Court Case documents establish that the only son of William (m1751 Rebecca PERKINS) died in 1771 and that the TRAIES name died out in this branch.

If Samuel (m1717 Elizabeth CREESE) is the brother of William (m1721 Mary RAWLING) then he is unlikely to also be the same Samuel (m1749 Willmet BOWDEN) for the same reasons given above for William not being the brother of Samuel (m1749 Willmet BOWDEN).

  5. Brothers John (m1760 Mary PORTER), William (m1759 Mary BOND) and Samuel (m1755 Elizabeth Chubb) are thought to be the sons of John & Sarah

The Will of John (m1760 Mary PORTER), read in conjunction with the associated Court Case, clearly establishes that these three were brothers. They can only be the sons of one of two families and these two possibilities are investigated below : -

    1. John & Sarah PIDLAR (m1724)

The TRAIES tree would be : -

Samuel = Eliz CREESE John = Sarah PIDLAR
      		| m1717 | m1724
       _______________|____________________________ _______________________|_______________________________

      John's sons : -
      • The 1728 baptism of William makes him 84 in 1812 which exactly matches the age of William (m1759 Mary BOND) who died in 1812.
      • The 1731 baptism of Samuel makes him 24 when he married Elizabeth CHUBB in 1755 and a normal age to marry.
      • The 1741 apprenticeship of John makes him about 33 when he married Mary PORTER in 1760 assuming his apprenticeship started at the normal age of 14.

      Samuel's sons : -
      • The 1718 baptism of John makes him about 36, should he have married Sarah ELLACOTT in 1754. He may have been alive with a daughter Mary (see 6 below) when William (m1751 Rebecca) drew up his 1768 Will, which omits mention of him. This omission may be because he had no male heirs or simply had died.
      • The only evidence that William existed is the reference in the 1768 Will of William (m1751 Rebecca) to William, son of brother Samuel. If Samuel was this William's brother, then his own son William must have been alive in 1768 but, so far, we have failed to find any further trace of him, be it a marriage or burial record.
      • No baptismal record has been found for Samuel but on 14Dec1753 Samuel TRAISE junior of Crediton appears as witness in a prosecution for shoes stolen from Samuel TRAISE senior of Crediton. If Samuel junior married Wilmet BOWDEN in 1749 he was probably born before 1728. The sequence of inheritance in William's Will indicates that he was born after William.

    2. Samuel & Elizabeth CREESE (m1717)

The TRAIES tree would be : -

Samuel = Eliz CREESE John = Sarah PIDLAR
      		| m1717 | m1724
       _______________|_____________________________________ _________________|_________________________

           |m1760 ?i1722 m1751 i1732 i? |m1759 d1766|m1755 i1731 d?	d? |m1749 d1737

      Samuel's sons : -
      • John, Samuel's oldest son, although alive when William (m. 1751 Rebecca RAWLING) drew up his Will, is not mentioned whereas his two younger brothers are, but this could be explained by any reason decided by William such as John having moved out of the locality.
      • William was alive when William (m. 1751 Rebecca RAWLING) drew up his Will.
      • Samuel died in 1766 before William (m. 1751 Rebecca RAWLING) drew up his 1768 Will so he cannot be the son of William's brother Samuel mentioned in the Will.

      John's sons : -
      • The estimated 1727 birth of John makes him about 27, should he have married Sarah ELLACOTT in 1754.
      • We know this William was born in 1728 but have no further record of him. It is possible that he died an infant or a bachelor.
      • Samuel was baptised in 1731 so, unless a late baptism, he appears to have an underage marriage with Willmet. Wilmet may have married a different and so far unknown Samuel, but this is thought unlikely.

If the reasoning is correct then the three brothers cannot be the sons of Samuel because of the problem presented by son Samuel dying before William's 1768 Will. However there could be other explanations: -
      • Although John (m 1760 Mary PORTER) refers in his Will to "nephews", he may be using sloppy language and not intending to specifically refer to children of a sibling.
      • The premise that William (m1751 Mary RAWLING) is the brother of Samuel (m1717 Elizabeth CREESE) may be erroneous.

  6. John (m1760 Mary PORTER) is thought to be the same John (m1754 Sarah ELLACOTT)

  7. John (m1741 Rose BADSTONE) is thought to be the same John (m1724 Sarah PIDLER)

There is no other John known to be around at the time and John and Rose BADSTONE appear to be two older people: -
  8. The identity of Samuel (m1735 Bow/Nymet Tracey. Joan LEE) is unclear.

As with the baptisms of Samuel and William in Generation 17, it has been impossible to come to a satisfactory conclusion and it is observed that, regardless of who this Samuel might turn out to be, these entries are unlikely to have any major significance on the family tree as the wife definitely dies 5 years later and no further trace has been found of their daughter, Joan.

  9. The identity of Samuel (i. 14Sep1731 Crediton) is unclear.

The only grown-up Samuel alive we've identified so far is Samuel (m. Eliz CREESE 1717) but it can't be his burial as he continues to have children after the burial date.
So it appears to be one of the children from either his marriage or the 1724 marriage of John & Sarah TRAIES or the 1721 marriage of William and Mary TRAIES. A good fit is Samuel c. 21Jun1731 Crediton s/o John and Sarah but there is no later baptism of a Samuel from their marriage to account for their son Samuel who is apprenticed in 1744/5. If he is a son from either of the other two marriages, we have no corresponding baptism. It is thought that this burial is a son of John and Sarah and that they name a subsequently born child Samuel for whom no baptismal record has survived because William and Mary name none of their sons Samuel and that a son of Samuel & Elizabeth, born after the burial, would be rather young to marry Willmet in 1749.

RETURN TO FAMILY INTRODUCTION..OR.. START of EXPLANATORY NOTES

FAMILY OF RICHARD TREASE and EMBLYN WILKIE [14r_ew]

The 1647 marriage is the first record of a TR**S found at Crediton so far. As it appears shortly before the marriage of a Samuel Trease in 1654, it is thought they may have been brothers.

Early Trease research indicated that they may be the sons of Michael Trease of North Petherwin. Since that early research, close links between the TRAIES family and a WYVELL family of Launceston Cornwall have been found. Of the seven persons listed on the 1641 Protestation return for North Petherwin - two are TREASES - Michael and his father, and three are WYVELLS - Degory, George, and Joseph.

The 1650 baptism is the last reference found for him at Crediton. A baptism of Mary d/o Richard (no surname) on 30Mar1662 is recorded but is thought unlikely to relate to this Richard. It appears that he and his family either left the area or all died (but, if the latter, no burial records have been found in the area).

RETURN TO TENTATIVE FAMILY TREE

FAMILY OF ? TREASE and ? BABB [14xb_x]

This possible marriage is indicated by the joint burial of sisters-in-law, Widow BABB and Widow TREASE, at Crediton on the 25th February 1711/1712.

1711/2	i. 25Feb1711	Crediton. Wid BABB age 84) yrs old and (FMP img)
1711/2	i. 25Feb1711	Crediton. Wid TREASE age 86) sisters in law.
Widow TREASE may be the wife of Samuel TREASE. She is said to be 86 years old, so would have been born around 1626 and aged about 28 when she married Samuel TREASE, who died in 1690. She could conceivably be the wife of Richard and would have been 21 when they married in 1647, but this marriage seems less likely, as no other trace of that family has been found in Crediton and they are thought to have moved away.

For widow BABB, who was said to be 84 years old (and thus born about 1628), to be sister in law to Mrs TREASE, the simplest scenario is that Mrs TREASE's husband had a sister, name currently unknown, who married a BABB. The other scenario is that Mrs TREASE had a brother who died and whose wife remarried to a BABB, but the joint burial suggests a stronger bond or relationship than would normally arise in that scenario.

Many BABBs lived in the Exeter area but no marriage of a BABB to a TREASE has ever been found. If Mrs BABB was sister to Richard and Samuel TREASE, and they were indeed from North Petherwin, they had several sisters of appropriate age who appear to have been unmarried in 1645 when Michael drew up his will. The Crediton baptismal register records children of John and Agnes BABB starting in 1634 with John (who may be the John BABB buried in 1702). That appears to be the only Crediton based BABB family but their sons appear a bit young to be husbands of "Widow BABB". The following Crediton BABB references in the Devon Wills list may also be relevant: -

RETURN TO TENTATIVE FAMILY TREE

FAMILY OF SAMUELL TREASE and REBECKAH PRISE [14s_rp]

Samuel's marriage is the second record of a TR**S found at Crediton and as it appears shortly after Richard's marriage it is thought they may have been brothers.

NOTE: She married in 1654, 58 years earlier so would have been about 28 when she married and born about 1626.
For Mrs BABB to be her sister in law, the simplest scenario is that Samuel had a sister, name currently unknown, who married a BABB.
The other scenario is that Samuel's wife had a brother who died and whose wife remarried to a BABB, but the joint burial suggests a
stronger bond or relationship than would normally arise in that scenario.
It is also just conceivable, but extremely unlikely, that this burial refers not to this Mrs TREASE but to the wife of Richard TREASE
	who married in 1647.

				RETURN TO TENTATIVE FAMILY TREE

FAMILY OF JOHN TRAIES and Lidia KERSWELL [15j_lk]

John is the second oldest son of Samuel & Rebecca TREASE. It is thought that the 1737 burial of a John TR**S at Crediton, which is the earliest appropriate burial found, may be him. The next burial of a John is in 1766, which is too late for this John, but the burial register is known to be incomplete. There are numerous burials of Lidia TR**S - 1730, 1732, 1735, 1737 and it is impossible to unravel with any certainty which, if any of these, is John's wife. Eight days after the 1737 burial of a John TRAYS, a Lydia TRAYS was buried at Crediton. This may be John's wife but their grandson Joseph is buried is also buried that day, so it could equally be their grandaughter Lydia for whom no subsequent marriage nor burial has been found.

The first Crediton burial of a Lydia TRAIES is in 1730 but Lydia may have died earlier and the burial record have not survived.
As the name Lidya is rare in Crediton, surname transcription errors have been considered but no surnames similar to TRAIES found -

FAMILY OF JOHN ROW and THOMOZIN TREES [15jr_t]

Thomozin may be a sister of Samuel and John who married a few years before her. The choice of the names Samuel and Rebecca for the oldest children may be indicative of her being the daughter of parents of the same names.
There are several John Row marriages at Crediton - Judith WHITE 10Dec1662, Gartherude HILL 29Apr1678, Joan PHILP 4May1691. Children of "John Row" (no wife mentioned) per Crediton baptismal register are William 26Aug1685, Samuel 19Apr1686, Joan 6Apr1690, Robert 23Mar1696 - dates rule out William and Robert as children of John & Tamzin but Samuel (1686) and Joan (1690) look possible, so are listed below with a "?".

				RETURN TO TENTATIVE FAMILY TREE

FAMILY of SAMUEL TRAIES and SARAH, FAMILY of WILL TRAIES and ELIZABETH

The only references to these two families are solitary entries in the baptismal register for the church at Holy Cross, Crediton which record: -

No marriage or other baptisms have been found in Crediton or elsewhere for either family, and the following possibilities are considered below : -

Entries may be simple copying mistakes

The register appears to be a copy and it is possible that errors may have occurred during copying. In both cases : - There is an instance in a later copy register of the son's christian name being repeated in error : - where the father's christian name was written as "SAMUEL", crossed through, and replaced with "William".

Where two copies of the Crediton registers have survived, comparison of the copy registers reveal that the copies were not careful verbatim transcriptions of the original entries. For example: -
  1. For the same entry, the spelling of the surname may differ in the two registers. "TRAISE" and "TRAIES" are frequently encountered, and in one extreme case, a burial entry is recorded "Lydia TRAIES" in one register and "Lydia CREASE" in the other.
  2. Words are omitted. One register says "and Elizabeth his wife" and the other simply records "and Elis". A baptismal record for Sarah TRAIES on the 9th November 1794 confusingly adds "baptised the 12th day of October last" whereas another more clearly states "privately baptised the 12th day of October last".
It is therefore concluded that it is quite plausible for the entries to be simple copying mistakes but we obviously can never know for sure whether they actually are.

Option - Samuel c.1726 is actually the son of John and Sarah

If this Samuel was the son of John and Sarah (rather than Samuel and Sarah), he would have to have died before their son Samuel was baptised on the 22nd June 1731. So far no such burial record has been found, but we know for certain that the Crediton burial records are deficient.

Option - Samuel c.1726 is really the son of Samuel and Sarah

If the baptismal record is not a copying error, we have a previously unknown Samuel, with an untraced marriage, and no other children. The only Samuel Trease we know of in the locality is the son of John and Lydia. He is currently attributed to marrying Elizabeth Creese in 1717 and was still married in 1726. He could be the father, but, if so, we are still missing a Samuel TRAIES.

Samuel, the father
He could be the son of Michael TREASE and Ruth WINTER christened in 1706/7 in North Petherwin and and who disappears from that area. It seems plausible that he would move to a locality where relatives from a previous generation had gone and had made a successful living. Another possibility, but this seems highly unlikely, is that he is an unrecorded son of Samuel and Martha who married in 1780. The records of a Samuel TR**S nearby, which have not been satisfactorily accounted for, and the consistency with which the name is spelt TRAYS rather than TRACY, definitely lend credence to there being another Samuel of the Trease family living in the area : -
1735	m. 1735 Samuel TRESE married Joan LEE of Bow (ER)
	1735	c. 26Feb1737	Clannaborough. Mary TRAYS d/o Samuel & Joan (IGI C05064-1)
1737	i. 21Jan1740	Clannaborough. Joan TRAYS	(FMP img)

Also there is a nearby Richard whose name is sometimes spelt like TRACY, and who like many of the Traies family is following the occupation of shoemaker/cordwainer.

1722	m. 25Feb1722/3 Richard TRACY of Bow alias Nymet Tracy, cordwainer, married Priscilla SKIBBOW of Hittesly, widow (ER)
1723	c. 13Oct1723 Hittisleigh, Devon. Andrew TRAYSE son of Richard and Prisilla (IGI C05110-1)

Sarah --?, the mother
We have no known records of her apart from a possible burial at Crediton in 1731. This burial could be that of Sarah, the daughter of John and Sarah, but the fact they did not name any of their daughters born subsequently Sarah may indicate otherwise.

	?1731	i. 26Jun1731 Crediton	Sarah TRAIES DCSRT

If, indeed, this was the burial of Sarah the mother, that would : -

  1. Explain why there are no more children baptised at Crediton,
  2. Enable the unidentified Samuel TRESE of the 1735 marriage of a Samuel TRESE to Joan LEE at Bow to be the same Samuel of Samuel and Sarah (who would then be his first wife) who had baptised their son at Crediton.

Samuel, the son
Apart from his baptism, we have no known records of him other than a possible burial at Crediton in 1731. At first sight it would appear that this burial was of Samuel, son of John and Sarah baptised a few months earlier in 1731, but he almost certainly survived as John and Sarah's son John refers in his 1787 will to four nephews whose descriptions match the children of this Samuel and no subsequent baptisms of Samuel son of John and Sarah have been found.

1726	c. 25Sep1726 Crediton. Samll son of Samll and Sarah TRAIES (IGI C050742)
	?1731	i. 14Sep1731 Crediton. Samuel TRAIES (DCSRT)

Option - Will c. 1730 is the son of Samuel and Elizabeth

If this Will was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth (rather than Will and Elizabeth), it fits in better with the Will of William TRAIES, who died in 1770, and who refers to William and Samuel, sons of his brother Samuel. However we would still be missing a baptismal record for the other son, Samuel.

Option - Will is actually son of Will and Elizabeth c 1730

If the baptismal record is not a copying error, we have a previously unknown William, with an untraced marriage, and no other children. The only William Trease we know of in the locality is the son of John and Lydia. As he almost certainly married Mary Rawling in 1721 and was still married in 1726 we can rule him out. Like Samuel, he could be the son of Michael TREASE and Ruth WINTER christened in 1704 in North Petherwin and and who disappears from that area but we are unable to formulate any ideas as to what subsequently happened to him and Elizabeth.

FAMILY OF JOHN TRAIES and SARAH PIDLAR [16j_sp]

This John is the son of John and Lidia TRAIES born in 1696. He married Sarah in June 1724, christened their first child in March 1724/5 and their last child in April 1736.

It is thought that John may have remarried in September 1741 to Rose BADSTONE, but for this to be the case, Sarah must have died after the birth of their last child and before John's remarriage. The only Crediton burial of a Sarah TRAIES found after 1735 and before September 1741 is recorded in June 1741 only 3 months before John's remarriage. If this burial is of her, then John must have been expecting her death for him to remarry so hastily. One would have expected Sarah to have produced children for longer than 12 years, so maybe she suffered from ill health after 1736.

Burials of a Sarah TRAIES in Crediton are recorded in 1732, 1741, and 1748 but only one baptism of a Sarah has been found so far.

John, thought to be John's son, appoints one Daniel Baston as executor of his 1787 Will. This may be the Daniel Badstone born 1725 (almost the same age as John Jnr), the son of Daniel Badstone who married Ann Gwin in Exeter in 1721 and who may be related to Rose Badstone. The Traies/Badstone marriage was childless which fits with it being a second marriage on both sides.

The explanatory notes to Generation 18 of the family tree examine the possibilities regarding this family.

	John TRAIES

We have no baptismal record of John but he appointed "brother William" executor of his Will. In the subsequent court case brought by "brother William" concerning another executor, Abraham Wyvell, it is apparent that this brother is the William who married Mary Bond in 1759. The age at death of that William and other evidence point to him being the son of John and Sarah, who was baptised in 1728. There is also circumstantial evidence - another executor of the Will is Daniel Baston, and it seems that he may be related to Rose Badstone, possibly the second wife of brother William's father.

		2.	After the baptism of their daughter there is no further evidence of this couple in Crediton.
		3.	His daughter christened in 1763 is also baptised "Sarah".

				RETURN TO TENTATIVE FAMILY TREE

FAMILY OF SAMUEL TRAIES and ELIZABETH CREESE [16s_ec]

There is only one appropriate Samuel Traies in Crediton recorded baptism registers and that is the son of John and Lydia who would be aged about 26 in 1717. It therefore looks likely that this marriage refers to that Samuel.

Samuel had a brother William, who is thought to be the William who draws up his Will in 1768, when he would have been 70. However, in this Will, William makes reference to William and Samuel, sons of his brother Samuel. This creates a challenge because the Crediton baptismal register does not have any record of the baptism of these two sons by Samuel's marriage to Elizabeth. However the Crediton registers do record sons, Samuel (1754), John (1760) and William (1763) by the 1749 marriage of a Samuel Traies to Willmet Bowden. So, at first sight, it looks as though Samuel remarried in 1749, but closer examination reveals three major obstacles to this being his remarriage : -

  1. Why is the order of inheritance William and then Samuel, but with no mention of John? Normally the inheritance goes to the oldest child first so you would expect the order to be Samuel followed by John. John, baptised in 1760, is almost certainly the John who dies in 1803 aged 63 and thus would have been alive and eight years old when William drew up his will.
  2. Why is no burial of Samuel's wife Elizabeth recorded before the marriage of 1749? The only appropriate burial of an Elizabeth Traies is recorded in 1767, when it is thought Samuel's wife would have been in her early 70s, a likely age to die.
  3. When the Will was drawn up both sons were minors, aged 14 and 8 respectively. It seems rather strange that no mention of them being minors was made.
If Samuel did not remarry, the following problems arise : -
  1. No baptismal records of Samuel and William, sons by his first marriage, have been found. However a reference to Samuel TRAISE junior in a 1751 Court action regarding the theft of shoes from Samuel TRAIES senior seems fairly conclusive that a son Samuel did exist.
  2. We can find no further trace of Samuel's son William other than the reference in William's Will of 1768. A 1730 baptism recorded as Will "son of Will and Elizabeth TRAIES" may be a possible Church register copying error for "son of Samuel and Elizabeth TRAIES" but that of course is purely conjecture. The two other Williams whom we know were alive in 1768 were William, son of Samuel and Willmet baptised in 1763 (who married Mary Hooper) and William, son of John and Sarah baptised in 1728 (who married Mary Bond). If the William who, until now, is thought to have married Mary Bond was, in fact, not the son of John but the son of Samuel, there are several William Traies burials that could account for him. This then presents us with a further challenge as we know for sure that the John who married Mary Porter in 1760 had two brothers, William who married Mary Bond in 1759 and Samuel who married Elizabeth Chubb in 1755.
The explanatory notes to Generation 18 of the family tree examine the other evidence and, on balance, conclude that William (m1751 Rebecca RAWLING) is Samuel's brother and that Samuel did have sons Samuel and William.

FAMILY OF SAMUEL TRAIES and JOAN LEE [16s_jl]

The 1735 marriage of Samuel TRESE to Joan LEE of Bow/Nymet Tracey is recorded in Boyds Marriage Index does not record the full date of the marriage - purely the year.

The identity of this Samuel is uncertain.

  1. For him to be a son of Samuel, John, or William, he could not be older than 17 so this seems unlikely.
  2. He could just about be the Samuel who married Elizabeth CREESE in 1718 but for this to be so we would have to accept that :-
  3. He may come from elsewhere. One possibility is that he is the son of Michael Trease of North Petherwin.
  4. He may not be related to the TRAIES families, but the way the surname is spelt in surviving records and the use of the christian name Samuel indicate otherwise.
Wherever he comes from, we have the mystery of where he disappears to. His wife, Joan, died in 1740, so he could be the Samuel who married Wilmet Bowden in 1749.

FAMILY OF WILLIAM TRAIES and MARY RAWLING [16w_mr]

There is only one William Traies in Crediton baptism registers prior to the 1721 marriage and he is the son of John and Lydia. It is therefore probable but not certain that this marriage refers to him. It also appears that all the children of this marriage may have died and that William, heirless, may have remarried in 1751 to Rebecca Perkins, when he was about 53 and she was about 27.

FAMILY OF WILLIAM TRAIES and REBECCA PERKINS [16w_rp]

The family of William and Rebecca is very well documented in the lawsuit Traies v Traies of 1807 brought by William Trowbridge/Traies, son of daughter Mary, against Rebecca Traies and her daughters. Further supporting evidence is given in the papers re 4 High Street, Crediton which include a copy of William's Will drafted in 1768. Accordingly we can be sure about this family and that there were no surviving male sons.

What we are less sure about is William's ancestry, as the evidence for this is circumstantial. The explanatory notes to Generation 18 of the family tree examine the possibilities. One line of thought is that he is the son of John and Lydia and that he had an earlier marriage to Mary RAWLING

FAMILY OF MARY TRAIES and JOHN TROWBRIDGE [17jt_m]

Mary is definitely the daughter of William and Rebecca TRAIES and most probably the granddaughter of John and Lidia TRAIES.

"Another sailor was John Troubridge whose will of 1795, when he was an armourer's mate in H.M.S. Terrible left a small property in our High Street William Traise als Troubridge. The year 1797 was so critical for the Royal Navy that a forced levy was made on every town in the Kingdom of just ordinary landsmen. The demand was fixed at 8 men for every 65 inhabited houses: on which 5 were extracted from Crediton cum Newton St Cyres."

"Venn, T.W., a typescript history of Crediton (2 Vols, 1968 revision) 1,88 states that in a 1795 will John Trobridge left a small property in High Street to William Traies als Troubridge. John, although described as of Moretonhampstead in the registers, was undoubtably of Crediton origin. His family, at one time classed as gentry, were in Crediton from 1407 to 1960 and Troubridge House in the second world war was used to house some 40-50 prisoners of war. In the 1569 Muster Roll appears in the list of Crediton archers "John Trawbridge gent."

Also in a manuscript note of George Edward TREASE : -
"Venn, op. cit. I.215 traces their history from 1232 and illustrated? the Georgian Trobridge House. The last Trobridge of Crediton died about 1960 but there is a Trobridge Society in the USA."

RETURN TO TENTATIVE FAMILY TREE

FAMILY OF JOHN TRAIES and SARAH ELLACOTT [17j_se]

The explanatory notes to Generation 18 of the family tree examine the possibilities regarding this family and conclude that it is likely that John is the son of John and Sarah TRAIES and grandson of John and Lydia TRAIES. We have no baptismal record of John but he appointed "brother William" executor of his Will and in the subsequent court case brought by "brother William" concerning another executor, Abraham Wyvell, it is apparent that this brother is the William who married Mary Bond in 1759. The age at death of that William and other evidence point to him being the son of John and Sarah, who was baptised in 1728. There is also circumstantial evidence - another executor of the Will is Daniel Baston, and it seems that he may be related to Rose Badstone, possibly his father's second wife.

Intriguingly, the family of the other executor, Abraham Wyvell, came from Launceston. As Wyvell and Trease were such uncommon surnames, it seems more than just a coincidence that Wyvell and Trease happened to be the same surnames of the two families who farmed at Pattacott, a few miles from Launceston.

1727	Born? The date of his apprenticeship implies he was born about 1727 as 14 was a normal age for apprenticeships.

1754	m. 17Feb1754 Crediton John TRAIES and Sarah ELLACOTT (IGI M050741)
The reasons for thinking this is a first marriage of this John is purely circumstantial: -
		1.	The date of this marriage is shortly after the finish of his apprenticeship.
		2.	After the baptism of their daughter there is no further evidence of this couple in Crediton.
		3.	His daughter christened in 1763 is also baptised "Sarah".
It could also be the marriage of John b1718 s/o Samuel and Elizabeth. John and wife Sarah could then account for these burials :-
