Dorothy and Michael are related, probably brother and sister. Michael was living at Pattacott in the 1640s and thus appears related to Walter Treys who leased Pattacott in 1545. One possibility is that Michael is the son of William, Walter's grandson :-

TENTATIVE TREE 2 - William Trease of Whitstone probably born about 1630

Records of this William start in Whitstone in 1661. On early family trees he was tentatively identified as the son of Leonard Trease, who had been clerk of St Mabyn, but it is now known that Leonard`s son William was buried in Lanivet on the 3rd August 1686.

Those early family trees also tentatively indicated that William, son of Michael and Thamsin, was the William who had married Alice Skelton at Tintagel in 1660. Recent research has shown that the marriage of William and Alice Skelton is actually recorded in Landrake parish register together with their subsequent burials in that parish. The source of the Tintagel reference was Boyd's Marriage Index (BMI), which, like all such indexes, is known to contain errors, and, being organised in alphabetical order by area rather than parish, is more prone to the parish being incorrectly copied than indexes organised in parish order. It is however still possible that BMI got the Tintagel reference from some other source so there may be a real connection with Tintagel some where. However in the absence of any real proof that Tintagel is not simply an error it seems more probable that the Landrake marriage is of another William Trease living in that area.

In view of these later findings, the possibility that William of Whitstone may be the son of Michael and Tamsin is being investigated. William shows strong links with the North Petherwin area through his family relationships with persons there plus a small property he owned at Pattacott included in the inventory to his Will.

Family of Michael and Margery TREYS nee ?

Michael is the son of Walter Treys and appears to have been born around 1520 - 1525. He married Margery before 1552 and they had at least one surviving child, a son called William. Michael, Margery, and William were all alive in 1579.
It is not known when Michael and Margery died but their son may be William Treys of North Petherwin whose will was proved in 1597. There are however no references to any of this family in the Church Accounts after 1586 and this may be construed to imply they no longer lived there. However the accounts are on separate undated sheets not filed in chronological order and almost certainly incomplete. For example, no references to the family exist between 1565 and 1580 and the original dating of the sheets estimated the latest sheet was dated 1589.
A reference to Margery Treys found in these records by the late Professor George Trease before 1978 seems to have gone astray. Assuming it was correctly transcribed it would imply that her husband Michael predeceased her.

Family of Degory and Dorothy DOUBT nee TREASE

We have no baptismal record of Dorothy Trease and thus cannot determine with certainty her father's name. In her will written in August 1663 she leaves a bequest to Michael Treise son of Michael Treise of North Petherwin. Although the relationship is not stated in the Will it seems highly probable that Michael the father was her nephew, son of her brother Michael. Dorothy's major bequest is to her 'kinswoman' Jane Galsworthy. Jane is obviously very close to Dorothy. The following observations are made: -

It is therefore thought most likely that Jane was living with Dorothy and Digory and that she had been taken into their home by them either following both of her parents dying and her being unmarried or following her husband dying. On balance it is thought that the first scenario is the more likely.
As the North Petherwin Bishop's Transcripts recorded only one of the eight children of Michael Trease although he appeared to be living there, it is thought possible that Degory and Dorothy may also have had unrecorded children particularly if the 1630 baptism reference below is confirmed. Also if the baptism is confirmed as one of her children it is safe to assume that she must have been born on or after 1585 as she was unlikely to have been older than 45 when she gave birth.
This would be compatible with her being the daughter of William or a brother of his, if he had any brothers, and the grand daughter of Michael.

Family of Michael and Thamsine TREASE nee NETHERTON

Michael was living at Pattacott in 1641 and is almost certainly related to Michael, the son of Walter Trease, who also leased the farm at Pattacott. Michael, the eldest surviving son, remained in Cornwall but no trace of the other sons has been found in the area. It appears they may have gone elsewhere to seek their living. Several possibilities have been found but definitive proof that they are sons of this Michael is lacking.
No records of Michael's family have been found between 1619 (when the baptism of his first son Michael is recorded in the North Petherwin Bishop's Transcripts) and 1641. Often a young bride went to her parents' or parents-in-law's home to have their first child. Possible explanations are 1) Michael was the first child and they lived elsewhere after they first married, or 2) Transcript omissions, or 3) simply a failure to baptise the children.

Priscilla 'Silly' TREASE
Although named 'Silly' in her father's Will she is likely to have been 'Priscilla' or, less likely, 'Cecily'.
She is thought to be the first child and born about 1617. She appears to have been unmarried in 1645. Only references found to Priscilla Trease in the area are:-
1628 m. 09Sep1628 Kilkhampton. Priscilla Trease and Ed. BUSE (COD and IGI). She is known to be the daughter of John Trease of Launceston.

Ann 'Nanny' TREASE
So far the only possible reference to her in North Petherwin is the burial below. The year after this burial Michael Trease, thought to be her cousin, married Ruth Winter. It is surmised that Ann may have stayed in North Petherwin and helped her cousin on his farm and that, after her death, he needed a wife to replace her.

William TREASE
William appears to be the second youngest son probably born in the early 1620s. The original version of this website, based on early research, showed William as having married Alice SKELTON in Tintagel parish in 1660. Tintagel is about 12 miles west of North Petherwin, is where his sister Tamsin had married in 1655, and close to Advent where his father Michael married in 1616.
However, it is now known that the marriage of William and Alice actually took place in Landrake which is about 20 miles south of North Petherwin, near to Saltash and Plymouth and close to where other Trease families were then living. The change of location lessens the probability that this marriage is of this William. One possibility is that he is William TREISE of Whitstone. The original version of this website, based on early research, showed William TREISE of Whitstone as the son of Leonard TREISE and Radigund SQUIRE but, since then, the 1686 burial of Leonard's son has been found at Lanivet and thus he can't be the William TREISE who died at Whitstone ten years later. William TREISE of Whitstone had many connections with families in the North Petherwin area and in his Will refers to property at Pattacott. Further research is underway on the TREISE family of Whitstone whose last son Leonard died in 1742 with no apparent heirs to discover what connections they had with the Trease family of Pattacott and in particular if William was indeed the son of Michael.
The following entries relate to William & Alice SKELTON:-
1660 Wm. Treas married Ealse Skelton, Tintagel Parish, Lesnewth Hundred (Boyd's Marriage Index)
1660 m. 13Nov1660 Landrake. William TREASE and Alice SKELTON (IGI M052841, COD)
1679 i. 07Feb1679 Landrake with St Erney. William TREASE (COD)
1680 i. 28Dec1683 Landrake with St Erney. Alice TREASE, wid (COD)
Although the Boyd's entry records the marriage as at Tintagel, the Phillimore's parish register transcript for Tintagel shows several marriages in 1655 including that of Tamsin Trese followed by two entries in 1660 neither for William and Alice's marriage. The marriage certainly took place in Landrake where parish register transcripts of their marriage and burials exist. The Landrake Registers have for 25Dec1659 John BAKE and Phillip BROOKING, then the one 1660 marriage of William & Alice, none for 1661 nor 1662, then CLOKE and HEDE at start of 1663. The Boyds marriage entry may relate to Banns in Tintagel or a Marriage Licence referencing Tintagel or simply be incorrect. The fact that no baptisms of children of this marriage have been found and both William and Alice are dead within 23 years may be indicative of a couple who married late in life and possibly had second marriages.

Samuel TREASE
Samuel appears to be the youngest son probably born in the mid 1620s. The following entry may refer to him: -

One of the following may refer to this Elizabeth, and the other to an unrecorded child of brother Michael and his wife Elizabeth :-

1660i. 08Apr1660 North Petherwin. Elizabeth Trees buried (ER)

The order of births has been determined from Michael's will on the basis that sons would inherit at age 21 and daughters at age 25 and using the delays in giving the bequests:-
Silly - 4yrs, Nanny - 5yrs, Thamson - 7yrs, Elizabeth - 10yrs, Michael - 1yr, Richard - 2yrs, William - 3yrs, Samuel - 4yrs.

Family of Michael and Elizabeth TREASE nee ?

Michael is the son of Michael and Tamsin Trease nee Netherton. His grandparents are not known but his grandfather may be William Trease.
Although Gartrude is the only christening found, further children may have been born and christened earlier both during the Civil War when baptismal records were not maintained and the Bishop's Transcripts for North Petherwin appear to have been incomplete. Michael and son Michael referred to in the 1670 lease for North Petherwin are thought to be this Michael and his son.
In 1663 Dorothy Doubt, in her will, leaves a bequest to Michaell Trease son of Michaell Trease of North Petherwin. This appears to be Michael, the son of this Michael, who must have then been living at North Petherwin, and Michael his son who appears to be running an independent life.
Before Dorothy's will was found, it had been assumed that, as no entry for Michael Trease was found in the 1662/4 hearth tax returns for North Petherwin (but 11 or more entries for North Petherwin are illegible) and as his son was thought to be aged, at most, about 10 years old, the Jacobstow entry for Michael Trease refers to this Michael Trease, and the farm at Pattacott was no longer being farmed by the Treases.
If this deduction is correct, it raises several questions. If we assume Michael's son was, at minimum, 18 years old at time of the 1662 hearth tax, then he must have been born prior to 1644 and prior to Michael's father's will of 1645. Michael's daughter Gertrude was baptised in 1658 at least 14 years later than the indicated birth for his son Michael so were there other children? If so did they all die in their infancy? If not where did they go? Did Michael's wife die and he then remarry later creating a long gap between the births of his two known children?

Michael TREASE
He appears to have been working his own farm when named beneficiary in Dorothy Doubt's will of 1663. He appears to be the Michael who married Ruth Winter in 1703 when he may have been about 60. One year prior to this marriage, the death of an Ann Trease is recorded in North Petherwin. It is surmised that she may have been his Aunt living with him on the farm and that following her death he decided he needed a wife. Alternatively Ann may have been his wife but if so neither marriage nor children have been traced and the marriage would have to have been after the 1670 Pattacott lease.
1663 Is named as beneficiary of Dorothy Doubt's will.

Elizabeth TREASE
One of the following may refer to this Elizabeth, and the other to her Aunt Elizabeth, daughter of Michael and Thamsine :-
1659i. 15Nov1659 North Petherwin. Elizabeth Trees buried. (ER)
1660i. 08Apr1660 North Petherwin. Elizabeth Trees buried (ER)
Neither of these entries has further identifying information but there appear to be three Elizabeths. Michael's sister was a spinster so it would have been difficult to add further identifying information for her other than spinster or sister of Michael (neither of which does not commonly appear on a burial register). His daughter and wife could be described as such. The most likely sequence of burials appears to be that Elizabeth the sister died first before Elizabeth the daughter was born. That way :-
  • at the time of the first death there would have been two Elizabeths alive - Elizabeth, wife of Michael, and Elizabeth
  • at the time of the second death there would have been two Elizabeths alive - Elizabeth, wife of Michael, and Elizabeth, the new born baby
  • the lack of a baptismal entry could be explained by the baby having had a difficult delivery and hastily baptised at home with a private christening which was not subsequently entered into the Church Register.
but this is possibly reading too much into these two entries. Elizabeth the daughter could be described as daughter of Michael. On balance it is thought that the first death was the sister and the second the daughter.

Family of Michael and Ruth TREASE nee WINTER

Michael is the son of Michael and Elizabeth Trease or possibly an earlier wife of Michael's, and the grandson of Michael and Tamsin Trease nee Netherton.
We do not know when Michael was born but if he is the Michael recorded in Jacobstow 1664 Hearth Tax, then he must have then been born about 20 years earlier making him about 60 when he married Ruth Winter and 80 when he died - not impossible. He may have had an earlier marriage and even children but so far no record of such a marriage nor children has been found. It may be that the Ann buried in North Petherwin the year before his marriage to Ruth was his first wife but it also could be his Aunt Ann who may have been a spinster then in her late 70's and helping him on the farm.
His sons Samuel and Richard, like many sons of his grandfather Michael, appear to have left the area. Two possibilities exist for Samuel but definitive proof that either is the son of this Michael is lacking.

No suitable further references to him have been found in the vicinity of North Petherwin. Possibilities are:-
Possibility 1. Samuel went to Bristol.
The age at death of this Michael is an exact fit. His wife would have been about 40 when they married so they could have had children. It is also possible he had an earlier marriage.

The age at death fits Mary the sister of Robert's wife Elizabeth. No other marriage for her has been found.
Possibility 2. Samuel went to Nymet Tracy .
This is in the vicinity of Crediton so another possibility is that this Samuel may be related to the Crediton Traies family. It is of course possible that after the death of his wife Joan in 1740, he went to Bristol and married Mary Tucker there in 1751.

Family of Oliver and Gartrude GREGORY nee TREASE

Gertrude is the daughter of Michael and Elizabeth Trease and is the only one of their children whose baptismal record has been found. Although the baptisms of only two of Gertrude and Oliver's children have been found at North Petherwin, it seems probable that they may have had more children including a son named Oliver who made his home in North Petherwin and brought up a large family.

Family of William and Mary TREASE nee ?

The first reference to William found so far is the 1661 retun when he is included with Anthony Sleeman.

When William made his Will in 1683 he was ill but he must have recovered somewhat as he went on to live until 1696. The Mary Treise, widow, who died 24 years later in 1720 appears to have been his wife. The length of time between their deaths may indicate that she was much younger than William, and that William therefore married late in life or married a second time but it is of course possible that William simply died young.

Only one baptism has been found for William's children, namely that of Prescilla who was baptised in 1670, whom he states in his Will to be the youngest of his five daughters.

One tantalising connection between various Trease family members is found in a set of property transactions : -
1. In 1628 Walter GOOD of Whitstone sells to John PHILLIPS a house and some land in Fonston "formerly in the tenure of William TREIS deceased" and "William BATE deceased". Fonston, is less than one mile from Castle Milford and it has been conjectured that William TREISE deceased is William TREISE of Castle Milford who died on the 4th May 1622 and was the subject of an Inquisition post mortem on 25th April 1623. This William TREISE had a son Leonard TREISE and his family tree has been documented.
2. In 1629 Walter GOOD sells some more property to John PHILLIPS this time, Thorne and Nethacott both in Whitstone. In 1665 the tenement called Nethercott is mentioned as being in the tenure of one HORRELL and John SLEEMAN as part of the marriage settlement between Thomas PHILLIPS, John's son, and Susanna GAYER.
The following connections with various Trease families exist: -
1. The land at Fonston, as already mentioned, appears to have been occupied by William TREISE of Castle Milford.
2. The tenement at Nethercott (value £35) is mentioned in the 1696 Inventory to William TREISE's Will so sometime after 1665 William TREISE must purchase or inherit it from Thomas PHILLIPS/Samuel GAYER.
3. John SLEEMAN is named as joint occupant of Nethercott in 1665, and Anthony SLEEMAN's name is bracketed with William TREISE's name in the 1661 return for Whitstone.
4. John HORRELL is named as joint occupant of Nethercott in 1665 and William HURROLL takes over the lease of Pattacottt, after the TREASEs have gone.
5. From 1670 onwards, the tenement at Thorne is occupied by Mary PETHICK, whose daughter becomes the wife of Leonard TREISE of Whitstone, William's son, and later passes from mother to daughter.
6. Edmund PHILLIPS of Stoke Climsland is involved the 1665 trust re Thomas PHILLIPS marriage. In 1687 Sampson TREISE of Stoke Climsland marries a Mrs Susanna PHILLIPS.

The tenth item in the Inventory of the 14th April 1696 is 'one tenement in Paddacott in North Petherwin'. This item may be a coincidence but it is thought more likely that the tenement indicates a connection with the Trease family living at Pattacott.
The sixth item In the Inventory is a tenement in Nethecoott which was "in the tenure of one Horrell and John Sleeman" in 1665. The 1745 lease for Pattacott is to Willm. Hurroll so may be there is some link between the Horrell, Sleeman and Trease families, yet to be discovered.

RESEARCH INTO MARY PETHICK's ANCESTRY
There are four possible baptisms at Whitstone plus a further Mary d/o John - baptism not found. The William Pethick of Thorne who died in 1684 is thought to be her father. Some of the PETHICK families in the Whitstone area use the christian names Nathaniel and Stephen in addition to Mary. There may be a connection with the Stephen PETHRICK who married Margaret TREASE at Callington in 1668, named a son Nathaniel, and died in 1724. Many of these PETHICKS left Wills so it may be possible to confirm this by inspection of an appropriate Will. : -

RETURN TO TENTATIVE FAMILY TREE

Family of Robert and Thamsin BRAY nee TREASE

Thamsin is the daughter of William and Mary Trease. She married Robert Bray in 1702 but died 12 years later having given birth to two sons whom we know of. Her husband remarried in 1716 - his wife may be the widow of Bartholomew Marshall. Robert Bray in his will of 1730 mentions his second wife Francis and the three sons and daughter listed below so the list appears complete except for the possible birth of a second son John. Robert appears to have been a farmer with probably a small farm judging from his will. His father appears to have been a carpenter. Subsequent records relating to the children have not been found in Whitstone. The William Bray who married Mary Stacey there on 26th May 1734 is possibly a son of the Bray family of North Tamerton.

No more records of Robert & Sarah in Whitstone but records in the neighbouring parish of North Tamerton may relate to them. Unfortunately from 1732 onward, there are also baptisms of a Robert & Mary BRAY recorded in North Tamerton so it gets very difficult to identify members of the two families and we aren't really sure if the Robert who married Sarah is the son of Robert & Thamsin

Sp2. Frances MARSHALL (nee ?PEDLAR)
Frances appears to be the wife of the late Bartholomew MARSHALL who appears to be the son of John MARSHALL. Records of baptisms of the children of John MARSHALL start at Whitstone in 1670 and finish in 1693 with the baptism of a daughter Frances. The Exeter BTs for Whitstone record c. 26Jun1631 John MEARSHALL s/o Thomas & Peasheo so Marshall family in Whitstone for at least one previous generation. The burial of Mary MARSHALL, wife of John, is recorded at Whitstone on 09Dec1702, but we have been unable to find their marriage. RETURN TO TENTATIVE FAMILY TREE

Family of Aaron and Prescilla LOAZE nee TREISE

Priscilla is the daughter of William and Mary Trease.
She married Aaron LOAZE at Whitstone in 1695. Two of their children were baptised at Whitstone in 1695 & 1697. After that date, baptisms of their children are found at North Tamerton and it is assumed they must have moved to that parish. Priscilla died at North Tamerton in December 1713 shortly after giving birth to a daughter Priscilla who appears to have survived for only a few days. No LOAZEs have been found at North Tamerton other than the few entries from 1700 to 1713. It seems that sometime after Priscilla's death, Aaron returned to Whitstone where he died
Aaron's baptismal record has not been found. It may be that his parents were Eloam Loaze and his first wife Honour, who appear on the Whitstone parish register. Unfortunately earlier records for Whitstone have yet to become available : -

RETURN TO TENTATIVE FAMILY TREE

Family of Jacob and Katherine BRAGGE nee Trease

Katherine is the daughter of William and Mary TREASE. Her baptism has not been found but she is mentioned in her father's will. The will was drawn up before Katherine married in 1689 and makes a bequest to 'her boy' so it appears that she may have had an illegitimate son.

In 1689 she married Jacob BRAGG who may be related to the William and Lettice BRAGG of North Petherwin as he and Thamsin name a daughter 'Lattes'. Bragg is an unusual surname for Cornwall. It also appears in the 1665 Will of John TOOKER the elder of Milton Abbott together with the name HORRELL. From this will it appears that John TOOKER's daughter Katherine had married a BRAGG and had a daughter Dorothy.

In 1671 Sapience BRAGG and Aaron LOASE married in North Petherwin. In 1695, six years after Thamsin married Jacob BRAGG, her sister Priscilla married an Aaron LOASE in Whitsone. Like BRAGG, LOASE is an uncommon surname in Cornwall and it seems likely that the two husbands were related to the BRAGG and LOASE of the 1671 North Petherwin marriage.

Surviving North Petherwin Wills/Admons may reveal potential family connections: -
- Lettice BRAGG (Admon 1666), William BRAGG (Will & Inventory 1661), & Thomas BRAGGE (Will, Inventory, Account 1680/81) - NOTE i. 26Dec1680 North Petherwin Thomas BRIGGE? (COD)

The 1st letter of the surname is shaped like a shepherds crook resting on the line of writing, but not going below it, and with a short horizontal line half way up. It is identical to the 't' at the end of the name Doubt. The second letter is 'r' and letters 4-6 are definitely 'ase'. The fourth letter is unclear in both places but could be an 'e'

WILL of WILLIAM DOWT made 28th December 1663 and proved 4th September 1664

William signs both Dorothy and Degory's Wills and appears to be the following William:-
1642 William Doubt 10s.0d. (Assessment for North Petherwin)
So far no other references to him have been found. He appears to have left no surviving children. From the bequests it appears that he had three female cousins, Frances wife of Stephen Oliver deceased, Thamsin wife of Leonard Orchard, and Elizabeth wife of Hugh Pedler deceased. Also Edward Doubt of Boyton was related to him in some way. The major beneficiary by far was Henry Bate, son of John Bate.

NOTES
1. In the bequest to Edmond Chapman the "six pewter dishes" does appear before "of Maxworthy ... etc" in the original document.
2. Both this Will and that of John BATE made on 13Oct1632 leave bequests to Jacob, John, Elizabeth & Thomsin PEDLER children of Elizabeth and Hugh. William's Will also leaves bequests to two more children, Joan & Frances. The baptismal records shown below fit the family referred to in William's Will but it seems highly unlikely that the mother Elizabeth PEDLER whose daughter Frances was born in April 1656 was the same Elizabeth who already had a family of four in 1632 : -

c. 20Jun1641 Boyton. Jacob PEDLAR s/o Hugh (COD)
c. 29Jun1643 Boyton. John PEDLAR s/o Hugh & Elizabeth (COD)
c. 22Apr1656 Boyton. Frauncis PEDLER d/o Hugh & Elizabeth b. 02Apr1656 (COD)

A possible explanation is that Hugh married twice but it seems more probable that the Wills refer to two different families. The Hugh PEDLER of John BATE's Will was still alive on 26May1655 when he proved the Will. It could be that he was the Hugh PEDLER, husbandman of Boyton, whose Will was granted Probate in 1660 and his wife was the Elizabeth PEDLER, widow, of Boyton whose Will was granted Probate in 1665. The 1632 Will was witnessed by Richard PEDLER who possibly could be the father of Hugh. A Hugh PEDLER s/o Richard was baptised at Boyton in 1575.
The PEDLER family appears to have been extensively researched and a Book about the family has been written which may give further information but some of the information in the Wills is not readily available from other sources. For example, that Hugh PEDLER's wife was Elizabeth BATE daughter of John BATE of Boyton. On the Internet, in addition to the parish register details, the following may give further information : -
1. 1656 Will of John PEDLER the elder
2. 1620 indenture naming William PEDLER as son and Heir of John PEDLER

Inventory taken and prized by Henry Badcock gent and Degory Hunny of the same parish the 10th of April 1676
... implements belonging to a carpenter...
Total £17 12s 4d

Another document dated 12th December 1676 makes Katherine Pethicke the executrix of the estate as Mary is of insufficient age to perform that role. Katherine appears to be Nathaniel's wife. Jasper Phillips is surety

NOTE
In 1676 Nathaniel names three living children John, Stephen, and Mary who is in her minority. This Nathaniel matches the Nathaniel, carpenter of Whitstone, who has two sons John and Stephen mentioned in property document for Hilton in Whitstone on 10Apr1652. It seems that the sons were of age in 1652 (born 1631 or earlier) and the daughter Mary perhaps is the daughter of a later marriage. (CRO RD/1114)
Margaret Trease (daughter of John and Flower) marries Stephen Petherick in Callington in 1668 and names a son Nathaniel. They may be related but so far no connection has yet been found.
Stephen of Callington died in 1724 and married in 1668 so it is unlikely he was the son of Nathaniel who died 1676 but he may be a later generation of the same family. Analysis of Nathaniel PETHICKs of Whitstone : -
