Walter is the earliest Trease ancestor to be traced so far.

Walter was a farmer who was living in North Petherwin, on the North Cornwall/Devon border from 1524 and possibly earlier. In 1524 he was recorded as being of below average wealth and it is surmised that he may have been in his early twenties, newly married, and needing time to establish himself as by 1545 he is recorded as being of average wealth for the area.

From 1552 and possibly earlier he leased a farm at Pattacott in North Petherwin. This farm together with another farm to the South may represent the same Pattacott mentioned in the Domesday Book. The 'North' farm at Pattacott farmed by Walter was about one hundred acres and of varying quality. About 30 acres was moorland, described in a later lease as 'Treys Moor'. We do not know for sure how it was farmed by Walter but later records show that the major business of the farm was the rearing and fattening of livestock, sheep, beef, cattle and pigs and it is thought that Walter will have also found that this was the best use for the land.

Walter married and had at least one son Michael, who appears to have been born about 1525, and he may have had other children. It is thought that his wife died in 1552 and that Walter himself died in 1579, judging from revisions made to the lease agreements for his farm.

Brief details of Michael, the only child of Walter Trease traced so far, are given below: -

Currently nothing more is known of Walter's ancestry nor whether he had other children and grandchildren. Research is ongoing. One possibly related Treys family are recorded in 1577 living, one mile from and within sight of Walter's farm at Pattacott, at the water mill and house called Castle Milford and appear to have been living there for at least one generation.
