Early Unplaced Trease Families

From 1538, Parishes were required to keep Registers but, even where they complied, few registers have survived from that date and those that have are often in a poor condition. From 1598 parishes were also required to send annual copies of the Registers to their Bishop (Bishops' Transcripts - BTs) but not all complied and some of the copies are unreliable. During the Civil War and the period of the Republic, BTs were not sent and Parish Registers were not maintained. As a consequence research prior to the restoration of the Monarchy in 1660 is based on patchy records. Attempts to reconstruct family trees from incomplete records of this early period are included here. These families are almost certainly related in some way to those for whom more complete trees have been constructed including both the Trease family of North Petherwin and the other Trease families listed in the research pages.

The tentative trees constructed here are speculative, unreliable, and incomplete. In all cases the associated data sources are shown but please note that in many cases different interpretations of the source data are valid and will place the person to whom it refers in a different family group. Also the source data shown may be inaccurate - it may have been transcribed incorrectly or the information on the source document could simply be wrong. These pages are under development and are in places incomplete.

The 'families' are grouped by location:-

The locations of Cornish parishes are shown HERE and may assist you in interpreting the events listed.

These pages are revised as new data is found and a summary of major changes is shown in the Change History. The abbreviations used together with an explanation of how dates are handled can be found in Data Standards.

Treases from the Launceston area (1573 - 1670)

Launceston, alias Dunnheved (Saxon name) had three parishes, referenced as M, T, and S in the partially constructed trees : - The notes below should be read in conjunction with the partial trees shown.

Launceston Notes

Members of the TREISE family of Castle Milford who lived in the area in that period are shown in a separate tree. There was a substantial Trease presence in the area at the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th centuries. Including the Castle Milford family, six households are listed there in 1660 but by the end of the century they'd all gone.

Note 1: Those named ROBERT

In the 1641 Protestation Return, two Roberts are recorded - Robert TRESSE of Launceston St Mary & Robert TREISE of St Stephen by Launceston . The first fits the Robert who married Jane WHALE in 1590 in Launceston St Mary, possibly then in his 70s. The second fits Robert TREISE who married Joan SOUTHWOOD in 1622. He appears to be the Robert of St Stephens who died around 1645, leaving a Will, now lost and his wife to be the Joan TREASE, widow, who died in 1660.

In the 1660 Poll Tax only one Robert is recorded - Robert TREAS & wife at St Stephen by Launceston. After that no more Robert Treases are recorded in the three Launceston parishes. The Robert Trease of Milton Abbot who marries there in 1658 may be the son of Robert and Joan baptised 1633. The age at marriage of 25 is a good fit but there is no other supporting evidence. If Robert is the son of Robert and Joan we have a problem with the 1660 Poll Tax record as Robert senior is dead and Robert Junior is in Milton Abbot. It could just be that after Robert senior's widow Joan died, Robert Junior and his wife were temporarily in the area helping their mother who died in March 1660/1661.

In 1621 the baptism of Honer daughter of Robert & Pascho TREASE is recorded in Launceston St Stephens. The solitary reference to this couple is a mystery. Mothers of first children often stayed with their mothers to get through the first childbirth in which case Robert and Pascho may have been living in a different parish. Currently this Robert is shown in the tree as the same Robert who married Joan in 1622. However in 1633 Robert, the husband of Joan, leased a property naming all three daughters by Joan, but not Honour who almost certainly was alive and went on to marry in 1641 and was the only Honour we know of at that time. It is of course possible that Robert made a separate arrangement for Honour, now lost, so there is no certainty about this. Pascho was an unusual christian name - by a strange coincidence an Anthonie SOUTHWOOD married a Pascho SPETTIGUS in 1631 and this is the only marriage of a Pascho we can find in the Launceston area around that time.

Note 1: Those named JOHN

In 1641 two John TREISEs are listed in the parish of St Thomas by Launceston. One of these is the son of Leonard TREISE. The other John with wife Alice has not been identified and does not appear on the charts below.

Family of Richard and ?

All we have for this family is a solitary baptismal record for a daughter Alice.

?Alice
1573   c. 26Nov1573 Launceston St Thomas. Alice daughter of Richard (Treise) (ER)
NOTE: Unclear why 'Treise' is in brackets but possibly no surname in Register

Family of Richard and ?Joan TREASE nee DAWE of St Stephens by Launceston

According to early Trease researchers, Mary, who died in 1593, was the wife of Richard who was buried on the same day. Transcripts from both the Mormon website (IGI) and the Cornwall OPC database state she was the daughter of Richard who was buried on the same day. The IGI transcript also states that she was the same child baptised the previous year. The tentative tree here assumes the latest transcriptions are correct and will be changed if this assumption is proved wrong.

On 20th December 1593, Richard, his daughter Mary, and sister Emma were buried at St Stephens by Launceston. It is surmised that they may have been together in the same house and died in a house fire. Although Richard appears to have died in an accident, he had already made a will, unfortunately now lost. Presumably he made this Will following his marriage implying that he may have been a person of some wealth.

The earlier transcript done by visual inspection shows "ux" instead of "ye". If "ux" is correct then "uxor" is wife.
Some transcripts bracket together the death of Marye with the baptism of a Marye on 22Feb1593.
If we trust the later transcripts more than the earlier then this is a young child of Richard not his wife.

Family of Richard and ? and Joan TREISE nee TURNEY of Launceston St Thomas

Joan, wife of Richard, who died in Launceston St Thomas in June 1618 is thought to be Joan Turney who married Richard Trease in 1602. The Launceston St Thomas baptisms of the children of Richard Trease straddle the period 1595-1608 and may relate to the same Richard. We know that a Richard Trease was in Launceston St Thomas parish in 1573 when his daughter Alice was baptised and that he may also have had a son who could be this Richard.
After daughter Mary's christening in 1608, no further references to this family have been found in Launceston cease apart from references to daughter Deborah and her husband Henry which appear as late as 1668 and 1682. A reference to Richard, son of Richard Trease, a goldsmith in London, has been located but it is a 'long shot' that this could relate to this family : -

Family of William JORY and Deborah TREASE

Deborah married William JORY, a glover, and appears to have spent the rest of her life in the parish of Launceston St Mary. She had one son, Thomas, and possibly other children so far untraced. Apart from the entries below, no further trace of the name JORY has been found in Launceston. The similar sounding name GERRY appears in connection with the TREASE family of North Petherwin. Leonard GERRY witnessed Dorothy Doubt nee Trease's will and Oliver GREGORY married Mary GERRY in 1723 but so far no connection has been found between them and the JORY family of Launceston.

Family of Robert TREASE and Jane WHALE

This Robert is thought to be the same Robert who is recorded as having a tailor's shop in Launceston simply because he is the only Robert Trease recorded in the local parish registers at that time. He seems to be amongst the best of tailors as he had the Sheriff of Cornwall as a customer. Strangely although baptism records start from 1568 in St Stephens, there is only the one baptismal entry and that fits the 1590 marriage in the parish of St Mary Launceston.

We know that his wife Jane, nee WHALE, died in 1618. In 1643, 53 years after Robert married her, William Treise married another Jane WHALE in Stoke Climsland. WHALE is not a common name in the area and it seems probable that both marriages are connected in some way. Some research into the WHALE family is included here. The marriage of Robert TREAZE and Martha BOWNSALL six years later is thought to be his remarriage possibly to an older woman as no childen are recorded from this marriage. The 15 year gap between the two possible children of his first marriage seems strange. Possibly any other children died during or shortly after birth and their baptisms at home were omitted from the parish registers.

Family of John TREASE and Johan BECKLYE

Baptisms before 1582 seem to be missing so there may be more children. It appears that John's first wife Mary LYTTACOT died within a year of their marriage possibly as a result of a difficult childbirth and John remarried to Johan.
A visual inspection of the Stoke Climsland register, most pages of which are illegible or partly missing, reveals the marriage of John Beckly to Jone Trayes (date illegible but previous entry is September 1559). It is felt that John's second wife Johan Becklye may be related to John Beckly. She may be a sister or a daughter. It is felt unlikely that she is his wife as there would be a span of 38 years from her first marriage to her last child.
The 5 year+ gap between the births of heir first child, Alice, and the next, Thamsyn, seems improbable - there may be missing children.

Family of Thomasine TREASE and John EDGECOMBE

Thomasine was the daughter of John and Johan TREASE nee BECKLYE. Currently her grandparents are not known. She is thought to be the same Thomasine who married John Edgecombe in 1613 who appears to be the son of Roger Edgecombe christened in 1588 in the parish of St Stephens by Launceston. One Roger Edgecombe both witnessed and performed the inventory of the Will of Richard Glaste who is thought to have married Christian Trease in the same parish in 1587. Whilst this is only circumstantial evidence it may point to a family link between Thomasine and Christian.

The John EDGECOMBE, thought to be their grandson, married Joan HOOPER the daughter of William and Radigon HOOPER of Linkinhorne (per details of a marriage settlement of 1668 regarding land in Clovelly) . In February 1644, one William HOOPER, almost certainly her father, witnessed the wills both of Edward TREASE and of Sampson TREASE, his nephew, both yeomen of Stoke Climsland. It was Edward's wish that William HOOPER perform the task of overseer of his Will so William must have been a trusted friend or relative. Although again only circumstantial evidence it may indicate a family link with the Trease family of Stoke Climsland.

Family of Richard and Christian GLASTE nee Treise and Margaret GLASTE nee ?

A solitary marriage register entry is the only reference to Christian Trease. It seems that she died young and her husband Richard remarried. Richard himself died young. His Will, written on the 7th March 1606/7, indicates he was a farmer, married to Margaret, and that his sons were born from 1596 onward, the baptism date of Richard, the first named son in the will. A daughter Katherine, named in the Will, may have been from his first marriage and and there may have been other married daughters not mentioned in his Will. Katherine may also be the Katherine who married in North Petherwin, an adjacent parish

It is thought that Richard's first wife, Christian TREASE, may be related to the nearby Trease families of Pattacott, North Petherwin or of Castle Milford, Egloskerry. Roger Edgecombe and Timothy Veal, both of whom witnessed his Will and carried out the Inventory, were presumably friends and/or neighbours. Roger Edgecombe may be the same Roger whose son John Edgecombe married Thamsin Trease at St Stephens by Launceston in 1613.

An Arthur TREISE married Elizabeth PALMER in Stoke Climsland in 1612 and the administration of Arthur TREISE of Stoke Climsland is granted in 1689. It is thought there may be a connection between those events and this Arthur. The marriage recorded in Stoke Climsland may even be a second marriage of the same Arthur.

Family of Justinian and Joan BEST Nee TREASE

Priscilla PAYNE nee TREASE makes a bequest to her widowed sister Joan BEST in her Will of 1684. Joan herself died in 1686. Her husband is believed to be Justinian, an innkeeper of Launceston, who died in 1678 and who performed the inventory of the estate of Joan's brother in law, John Payne of Launceston. Both Joan and her husband left Wills. Neither Will has been inspected yet. Joan's Will may possibly reveal more Trease relatives particularly if she had no surviving children. No children of this marriage have been found.

Family of Priscilla TREASE and Edward BUSE

Priscilla Trease is the daughter of John and Johan TREASE nee BECKLYE. She married a miller, Edward Buse, at Kilkhampton on 09Sep1628. The location 'Buse's Mill' still exists in Kilkhampton.
In her will she granted a bequest to kinswoman Thamsin Pearn. The most likely relationship is that Thamsin is her niece, the daughter of Priscilla's sister Joan who married Edward Pearne in 1610. It would seem that Thamsin who was born about 1613 and would have been unmarried and over 40 when Priscilla made her will was the most needy of Priscilla's close relatives. The John Bewes who performed the inventory for Robert Trease who died in 1644 may also be related perhaps her late husband's brother.

The only definite record we have of this Alice is that she married Richard CHING in 1665 in Poughill. No baptisms of any children have been found nor has any record of her death. Several records of Richard CHING have been found in the area but none have been definitely identified as being of Alice's husband.

FAMILIES in PLYMPTON ST MARY area (1620 - 1703)

A run of early register entries at Plympton St Mary help us to establish that a Trease family lived in that area from around 1620 (and possibly earlier) until about 1703. Whence they came and whither they went has yet to be established.

FAMILIES in ST WINNOW and surrounding areas

A run of records at St Winnow enables us to establish a tentative tree for one family there. St Winnow adjoins to the South - St Veep, North - Cardinham, East - Bradock/Boconnoc, West - Lostwithiel, Golant and Fowey. References in adjoining areas are too patchy to determine relationships with the St Winnow family.
The christian name 'Walter', a name rarely found for Trease sons, appears several times in these families and implies a possible link with the family of Walter Trease of North Petherwin. The spelling TERISE appears in Fowey and raises question whether TRERISE is another spelling variation of the name.

RETURN TO INTRODUCTION

DATA SOURCES for St WINNOW families

Family of John TREASE and Ann ...? of St Winnow

We have no record of John's baptism, marriage nor death. John, almost certainly his son, got married at St Winnow in 1624/5 and the baptism of his first child, Catherine, is recorded in 1625 as 'daughter of John Junior' and that of his second child, John, in 1627, as 'son of John the younger'. This confirms that John senior was still alive up to 1627 and living in St Winnow. However, the third child christened in January 1628/9 is recorded simply 'daughter of John'. By implication John Senior died between 01Apr1627 and 25Jan1629/9 but no burial record has been found at St Winnow.
The Ann Trese, widow, who was buried at St Winnow in 1644 is thought to be his wife. If so, she died between 15 and 17 years after him so John: -

  1. may have died young, or
  2. married Ann late in life. or
  3. his wife simply lived to a good age.
It is surmised that John was his oldest son and born about 1600 in which case he may have been married in the late 16th century and born around 1575 in which case option 1 above seems the most appropriate.
He may have had other children but none appear at St Winnow. Surviving daughters most probably had married. A William Trayes recorded at Fowey in the 1640s is thought to be related and may possibly be a younger son of his or even a brother.

Family of John TREASE and Agnes KNIGHT

John is thought to be the son of John and Anne Tres. He names one of his sons 'Walter' which is an uncommon christian name for the Trease family and suggests links with the family of Walter Trease, the earliest recorded Trease ancestor, who lived at North Petherwin many miles away.

The John who was baptised at St Winnow in 1627 the son of John and Agnes Tres nee Knight is thought to be the same John Treys who married Elizabeth Pearse at St Veep in 1655 when he would have been 27. Shortly after a John Trease appears in a poll tax return for Lostwithiel and it is surmised that he is the same John. The evidence that the the marriage and poll tax returns relate to this John are that :-

No children of theirs are recorded but the John Trease who marries Thomazine Nanjulian in Luxulyan in 1700 could be an unrecorded son.

TO INTRODUCTION TO ST WINNOW FAMILIES

Family of John and Thomasine TREASE nee NANJULIAN

The first record is John's marriage to Thomasine in Luxulyan in 1700. Thereafter several Trease burials appear in Lostwithiel, possibly his children, plus property references to a John Trease, clothier followed by the burials of John and Thomasine Trease in 1739 and 1740 are very probably them.
Wills of a Nanjulian family at Lostwithiel exist - Thomasine, widow, 1746 and Samuel, hatter 1750. These Nanjulians may be related to John's wife because of the matching christian name and related occupation.
If the Lostwithiel burials of Walter - 1701 and Eady 1703 are of their children, the use of the christian name Walter implies a connection with the Trease family of the parish of St Winnow.
John may be the son of John and Elizabeth nee Pearse

The Ann who married Phillip Hobb in Fowey within a few weeks of William's second marriage is almost certainly related, possibly a younger sister of his and/or may be the Ann baptised in St Winnow in 1628.

FAMILIES in ST ENDELION and surrounding areas

The key reference document is the Will of John Trees the Elder of St Endelion made in 1613. A few patchy records of his and his brother's family enable some of their family members to be identified but there is insufficient information to construct a dependable family tree.

Several males appeared to survive to continue the family name but further records have not been found. The surname TRESAYES and variations exist in the area and may be another possible variation on the name TREASE.

Family of Otto and ? of Padstow

Otto's will of 1599 does not appear to have survived. John, son of Otto Trees deceased of Padstow, is a beneficiary of the 1613 Will of John Trees of St Endelion by which John also leaves bequests to the children of Otto Trees, of his daughter Jane, and of Paul Hendra but not of his son John. This implies that his son John had no children in which case the marriage and baptism of John Tres of St Endelion are most likely to refer to Otto's son John and John's son.
Otto Trees, whose children are beneficiaries, is named without further identification implying that he was the only Otto Trees in the area. It is also thought that this Otto was the son of John, as all his children are beneficiaries.
Beneficiary John Hicks als Treglyne who is described as John's nephew is most likely the husband of Otto's daughter but may also be the daughter of a sister of John's.
Otto and John are closely related. Their deaths within a few years of each other in the same area plus the similarity of their son's names indicates they were probably brothers born around 1525 - 1535.

Children - names unknown
1614 Married and with children when Uncle John makes Will
John TRESE
Unlike his brother Otto, no children are recorded in his father's Will and it is assumed that John was unmarried in 1613 and that the John who marries in 1596 is the son of Uncle Otto but it is of course possible that John had married and that his wife and any children had all died.
1614 receives a bequest in John's Will
1641 Not found in the 1641 Protestation returns for Endellion or surrounding area so moved, died, or simply not recorded.
Jane TRES
In 1613, when her father drafts his will, he bequeathes 12d a year to 'every one' of her and Thomas's children. This may imply she has at least three children alive at that time or simply be worded to include children not born at time Will drafted.

Philip Hobbs - references to families in Fowey

Unfortunately Philip's will makes no mention of wife nor children so we do not know whether he is the same Phillip Hobb who married Ann Terise. If it is, then wife Ann and any children seem to have had predeceased him and he died without further issue. He does makes reference to Kinsmen Thomas and John Hobbs of St Austell and James Hobbs. There are many other references in parish records, Wills and property documents to Hobbs families in the area. In Fowey the following Hobbs refences have been located:- It is surmised that Michael the surgeon, and Susanna (William Trayes's wife) may have been brothers and sisters to Philip and had all predeceased him. Michael's son Robert if alive would not have needed support so would not have been included in the will. Phillip's will mentions Thomas Luny junior. In 1690 the property mentioned in the property documents below is leased by Thomas Luny son of Thomas Luny mason. in 1682 the will of Thomas Luny mason of Fowey is proved - possibly related. A Thomas Luny mason of Fowey occupied a house at Polkerris in 1675. There are two property documents referring to a Phillip Hobbs of Fowey, Miller: -
