TREISE family of Castle Milford List of Changes Abbreviations

These pages provide a tentative family tree, supported by source data, for the Treise family who lived at Castle Milford from 1577 (and possibly earlier) until 1622 and who died out in the male line in 1780. As they lived just over a mile from the farm at Pattacott where the Trease family were living at the same time, it seems likely the two families were related but evidence to confirm this is lacking. The Research home page gives details of other possibly related family trees that are currently being researched.

Source data is grouped by family and the document from which it is derived is appended in italics. However, different interpretations of the information could place the person to whom it refers in another family and the information shown may be inaccurate e.g. it may have been transcribed incorrectly or the source document itself may simply be wrong. Most source data shown here is merely a subset of more comprehensive data already available in these documents: -

but does include some new data, including at time these web pages were first created in January 2012 : -

Research is ongoing and new information found is listed in the List of Changes.

Dates and abbreviations are explained on the Standards and Abbreviations page but please also note the following two abbreviations specific to this tree : -

Family of William and Alice? TREISE nee ?

This William is very probably the father of William who married Mary. His wife is thought to have been called Alice and he is thought to have died before 1577 as Alice Treys, widow, is recorded at Castle Milford in property documents dated 05May1577 and 03Sep1578.
There are two references to an Edward Treane living in the area in the 1540's. Although the surname looks similar to Trease, it may be a variation of the name "Trehane".

Edward TREANE

Below are references we have to Edward who lived in the Manor of Penheale and combined parish of Egloskerry and Tremaine.
Although the name 'Treane' appears similar to "Trease" and does not seem to appear elsewhere in Cornwall in this form, the reference may be to the surname "Trehane". In 1567 Sampson Trease of Southill married Elizabeth Trehane the widow of Edward Trehane.
The christian name Edward is used by the Stoke Climsland Trease families.

John TREYS

Below is the only reference we have to John who lived in the combined parish of Egloskerry and Tremaine.
By the terms of the Muster, he would have been an able-bodied person between the ages of 16 and 60.
The ratio of able-bodied men to adult males appears to be about 1:3.5., i.e. only about 30% being classed 'able-bodied', so other male family members would almost certainly have been in the parish including William, possibly his older brother, who may have been over 60 by then.

Family of William and Mary TREISE nee ?

We know that in 1577 William Treys, thought to be father of Leonard, bought Castle Milford. Castle Milford was not a Castle, it was a manor /farmhouse by a ford with a watermill. The property there is referenced in documents as far back as the 12th century. The 1623 inquisition carried out after William's death tells us that, by the 1609 marriage settlement for his son Leonard, a dwelling house (messuage), a corn mill and 80 acres of land in Castle Milford and Sockingham were purchased by the Squire family for him to use for the rest of his life. The 1577 indenture for Castle Mylford and Sockingham indicates that William Treys had already purchased the property from George Greynvyle of the manor of Penheale so either the Squire family purchased it off him or he had transferred it to another or the William Treys who bought the property was not the same William Treys father of Leonard. The christian name Leonard seems to be unusual for the Treise family and it is thought that Leonard the son was named after his maternal grandfather. There are several possibilities. Unfortunately evidence is unlikely to be ever found but some conjectures are examined here.

Family of Leonard TREISE and Radigund nee SQUIRE

Leonard was the son of William and Mary and possibly the grandson of William and Alice. He followed a successful career as a lawyer and rose to become the most important secular person in the parish of Launceston. He eventually reached the rank of Esquire/Armiger which placed him well within the top 1% of families of the realm by wealth.
In 1609 he married Radigund Squayer daur of John Squayer. She is thought to be related to Radigund daughter of Richard Gedy of Trebursey, near Launceston, and wife of Sir John Eliot the great patriot with whom Leonard struck a friendship.
In 1605 Thomas Gedy, who was buried at Kea in 1605, left a legacy of one sheep to Redigon Gedye, the daughter of Richard Gedy of Trebursie (per tree from descendant Nick Gedye about year 2000). One Thomas Gedie was signatory to both the indenture for the sale of Castle Milford and a subsequent document confirming payment.
Radigund Eliot died in 1627 and when her father died in 1629 he made her husband, Sir John, his executor and John Eliot junior, a minor, his heir, as he had no surviving children. However, by then, Sir John had been imprisoned in the Tower of London by Charles 1st so his children were effectively without parents. As a result, Leonard Treise had to handle Richard Gedy's affairs plus look after Sir John Eliot's children.
Leonard's own children were born in Launceston up until March 1620 when their birthplace is recorded as Trevallet. This implies that sometime between 1617 and 1620 the family moved to Trevallet, a farmhouse about 2 miles due west of Launceston, high on the south side of the valley of the River Kensey. Radigund's uncle, George Squire had lived there until he died in 1614.
The family supported the Parliamentarians during the Civil War and it seems that they left Trevallet to live in London when the Cornish Royalists advanced on Launceston. Their son Leonard died in London in 1642.

"Parochial & Family History of the parishes of St Mabyn and Michaelstow in the County of Cornwall"
by Sir John MacLean, F.S.A. Pub 1870

The notes in italics are the author's comments.

St Mabyn
1629 June15th. Thomas PORTER, clerk, MA, was admitted to the Rectory of St Mabyn, vacant by the death of Thomas DUCKE, last incumbent, upon the presentation of Elizabeth PORTER, widow, relict and administratrix of John PORTER deceased, for this turn, the true patron by the grant of William LOVEYS [8] of the same rectory, the true patron.

[8]. This is an error. The Grant was by King James 1st (see ante p10n). Mr PORTER was sequestrated at the time of the Rebellion (Walker's sufferings, part 2, p327) and a Mr William TREIS intruded into the Rectory. Calamy says "Mr TREIS was reckoned a profound scholar, and his composures extraordinarily good but he was unhappy in his delivery (Vol i p355). As Mr PORTER survived to the Restoration, he was , of course, reinstated in his Benefice and was buried St Mabyn 30Sept 1665.
1668 October 9th. John HILL, clerk, [9] was admitted to the Rectory of St Mabyn vacant by the death of Thomas PORTER last incumbent upon the presentation of Thomas TOCKER, Gent, the true patron.
[9]. Bishops Reg., N.S., vol i fo108.
In 1664 Richard LOVEYS & Frances his wife granted the Advowson of the Church of St Mabyn to George SPRY (Finium 16th Charles II Michs). This was perhaps the next presentation only, and was probably assigned by Mr SPRY to Thomas TUCKER
1681 April 21st. John HILL was admitted to the Rectory of St Mabyn and his previous title corroborated upon the presentation of Charles II.

Family of Cecilia TREISE and George DENNIS

Cecilia was the daughter of Christopher and Elizabeth TREISE nee ROBINS and the granddaughter of John and Cecilia TREISE nee DUNKIN.

In 1718 she married George Dennis whose father Edward (per History of Parliament) "was the son of a Liskeard attorney several times mayor of the borough near which he bought the estate of Trenant in 1702. Marrying into one of the principal local families, he was active in borough affairs, lending money to the corporation and joining his interest to that of Richard Eliot, to whom he no doubt owed his post as comptroller of the lotteries. In 1734 he gave up this interest to his son in order to be returned for Liskeard, but next year Eliot reported to Walpole that 'Mr Denis is so infirm that for the future I must not expect much assistance from him'. He voted with the Administration on the Spanish convention in 1739, and on the place bill in January 1740, dying just over a month later on 8th March."

Trenant (per The parochial history of Cornwall edited by Davies Gilbert) "was sold by Mr Medhope in the first year of Queen Anne to Edward Dennis of Liskeard attorney at law who had before a mortgage on it and it is now the seat of his son George Dennis, Esq., sheriff of Cornwall in the 1st year of George II ... Trenant has frequently changed its proprietors since the time of Mr Hals. It passed from Mr Dennis to his sister's son Sir Christopher Treise who was Sheriff of Cornwall at the accession of King George the Third and knighted on the occasion of presenting an address".

Family of William and Olympia MORSHEAD nee TREISE

Olympia was the daughter of John and Olympia TREISE nee LARK and the granddaughter of Christopher and Elizabeth TREISE nee ROBINS.

She married into the St Neot branch of the MORSHEAD family. It appears that in 1683 William MORSHEAD of Penharget in St Ive died childless and divided the MORSHEAD estate between his two brothers Richard who inherited Penharget and Crilla in St Ive and Edward who inherited East Down in St Neot. Details of this complicated family tree are shown HERE.

With the death of her brother Christopher in 1780 she became the sole surviving child and heiress of this branch of the family and the family's wealth passed to the MORSHEAD family into which she had married.

Wiliam Morshead's family tree

A brief history of the Morshead family is given in The Parochial and Family History of the Deanery of Trigg Minor in the County of Cornwall written by John Maclean published 1873 p.80 - 83 and states:-

"The family of Morshead is said to have resided at Penhergett, in the parish of St. Ive, in the early part of the 16th century. A century later Edward Morshead lived at the same place. William Morshead, the eldest son of Edward's son William, died there in 1683 a bachelor, and bequeathed Penhergett and Crilla, in St. Cleere, to his next brother, Richard, and East Down, in St. Neot, to his brother Edward. The descendants of Richard became extinct in the male line on the death of John Morshead, of Penhergett, 1739. The heiress married John Luke, of Trevilles, in the parish of Ruan Lanihorn, Esq., father of Admiral William Luke, on whose death, s.p., the elder branch became wholly extinct.
William Morshead, the only son of Edward, last above mentioned, married Catherine daughter of John Cole, of Cartuther, Gent., and eventually sole heir of her brother John Cole, of the same place, Gent., who dying s.p. by will proved April 2, 1716, bequeathed his land in Blisland to his nephew John Morshead and his heirs, with remainder to his nephew William Morshead, to whom also he bequeathed Cartuther and other lands. John died unmarried, and William inherited the whole of the estate. This William, by Jane, daughter of Edmund Herring, of Langton, co. Devon, Esq., had a son William to whom a grant of arms was made by John Anstis, Garter, on March 11, 1744. William Morshead was sheriff of Cornwall in 1753. He married Olympia, sister and sole heir of Sir Christopher Treise, of Lavethan, Knt., by which marriage on the death of Sir Christopher, he acquired the great estates of that family. ... "

Also an abstract of a family tree by WM (believed to General William Morshead who married Jane Hussey) is given below.

In February 1644 at St Neott Edward Morshead, the youngest of (?) Brother of William Morshead Gent. of Penharget in St. Ive, married Phillippa Mitchell
In April 1649 they baptised their son William
In February 1686 son William married Katharine Cole daughter of John Cole, Gent.
William had three children: -
- John baptized January 1687, who died a Bachelor at Trewarbin and was buried at St. Neot March the 4th 1719.
- Elizabeth baptised ?June 1689, who was buried May 11th 1706.
- William baptised January 1690 who either in 1717 or 1718 married Mtrs. Herring of Langston
Their son William had several children: -
William born in August 1722 married in April 1745 Mtrs. Treise, only daughter of John Treise Esqr. of Lavethan.
This William had 13 children: -
- Eldest son John born July 1747 married in April 1778 Mtrs. Frederick eldest dr. of the late Sir Thomas F. Bart. by whom he has 5 children, 2 sons & 3 drs.
- Second son William born in Sepr. 1748 a Lieut. General in the army & Batchelor
- Youngest son Edward born February 1762 married April 1798 Mtrs. Kelly Eldest dr. of Arthur Kelly Esq. of Kelly in the County of Devon by whom he has five children 3 sons & 2 daughters.

A family tree derived from the two sources quoted above and supported by evidence from transcripts, where available, is shown below. The information provided by "WM" in his family tree is almost certainly correct and well supported by evidence from surviving parish registers but the tree provided by Maclean is more difficult to reconcile with evidence from other sources because : -

- the statement that Richard MORSHEAD's line became extinct on the death of John MORSHEAD of Penharget in 1739 and the heiress married John LUKE is largely substantiated by William MORSHEAD of Penharget's will of 1739 proved in 1751 after his death in 1749 but the words on the death of John Morshead, of Penhergett, 1739 need to be replaced with on the death of William Morshead, of Penhergett, 1749

- it is currently impossible to substantiate the earlier parts of the tree from the patchy information available from parish records but they will be checked when other information sources are located.

Sampson TREASE of St Ive, from another branch of the TREASE family, was on friendly terms with members of the Penharget branch of the MORSHEAD family and must have been aware of the St Neot branch of the MORSHEAD family who later married into the TREISE family even if he did not personally know them.
In 1717 Sampson witnessed the will of Judith BENNICKE, the widow of Richard DOIDGE who later remarried to James BENNICKE.
In 1726 Sampson's own will was witnessed by James BENNICKE and William MORSHEAD of Penharget, whose mother Elizabeth MORSHEAD had remarried to James BENNICKE after their respective first spouses had died.

Whose daughter was William's wife Mary?

The fortunes of the Trease family seem to dramatically increase with the family of William and Mary and it is surmised that this may be attributable to Mary's parents who so far are unidentified.

The use of the christian name Leonard has only been found in this branch of the family and in the family of William Trease of Whitstone, who may be related in some way to the Castle Milford family. It is surmised that the son Leonard was named after his mother's father, in which case we are looking for a prosperous man named Leonard probably living in the area.

Leonard Bligh

Could Mary be the daughter of Leonard Bligh who signed the 1577 purchase of Castle Milford? Leonard Bligh is recorded as living at Tregeare, possibly building the mansion house there and dying in 1583. There appears to be a 1583 Inquisition Post Mortem for a Leonard Bligh that currently has not been investigated further (NAI C142/200/16).
The 1620 Visitation of Cornwall shows Leonard Bligh as the second son of William Bligh of Botadon (which is in South Petherwin) and son William as the heir. The subsequent additional work done by J.L. Vivian (Visitations of Cornwall published in 1887 Exeter) shows the more precise tree below:-

Leonard was the second son so his father's estate was inherited by his brother William but Leonard was wealthy in his own right possibly by his marriage to Katherine. The fact that his estate passed to his brother William implies that he had no heir so the possibility of him being a grandfather to Leonard Treise seems ruled out. It is conceivable that William may have had a good working relationship with Leonard and and that as Leonard had no children of his own he made arrangements to help William out financially but the circumstances in which this would occur seem remote.
Currently the only link between the two families that has been found is that Leonard Bligh signed the endorsement on the back of the first indenture.
