Oliver Gregory and Gertrude nee Trease see Data see Family Tree     (generation 15)
(This text added to website in May 2011)

Gertrude is the daughter of Michael and Elizabeth (whose maiden name is unknown), and a grandson of Michael and Thamsyn Trease of North Petherwin. She was christened at North Petherwin in May 1658.

It is thought she may have stayed on the farm at Pattacott helping her father until his death in 1680 and then possibly helping her brother Michael until 1685 when, aged 27, she married Oliver Gregory in North Petherwin parish church. Her husband was the son of Oliver and Elizabeth Gregory of Advent whose birth in January 1658/9 is recorded in the St Breward parish church records. Oliver was thus almost the same age as Gertrude. On Christmas day 1677 Oliver's sister Tamsen was baptised at Advent church. During the intervening period of 19 years many other children may have been born and baptised in Advent parish whose registers for that period have not survived. It was common at that time for the first child to be baptised in the mother's parent's parish so it is possible that Oliver's maternal grandparents lived in St Breward.

Oliver's parents lived in Advent where his father owned a small farmhouse with one fireplace and a couple of outbuildings and appear to have lived next door to Clement Symons and his wife Thamsin (nee Trese), thought to be Gertrude's Aunt. It seems probable the possible Trease family connection with the next door neighbours was how Gertrude came to meet her future husband.

After Gertrude and Oliver married, they lived in North Petherwin where they appear to have had a large family.

Gertrude died in August 1723, aged in her mid sixties, just a few months before her older brother Michael. Her husband Oliver appears not to have remarried and died just over twenty years later in January 1744/5 aged in his mid eighties.

The baptisms of two of their children have been found so far but it seems probable that they had more children than this, judging from the burial and marriage records at North Petherwin.:-

The Oliver Gregory who married Mary Gerry in North Petherwin in 1723 is thought to be the eldest of their sons but so far no record of his baptism has been found. He stayed in North Petherwin after his marriage and had a large family with many descendants.
