Degory Doubt and Dorothy Trease see Data see Family Tree     (generation 12)
(This text added to website in May 2011)

Dorothy Trease is thought to have been born between 1585 and 1595. Her parents are not known. It is surmised that she may have been the daughter of William who died around 1597 when she would have been a minor.

The first record we have of her is 'late in 1611' when she married Degory Doubt, a farmer of North Petherwin. The fact that the marriage took place in North Petherwin indicates that she and possibly other members of her famly were living there. Members of the Doubt family are, like the Trease family, recorded in North Petherwin as far back as 1522 so the two families may have known each other for many generations.

There is a possible reference to a child of Degory Doubt being christened at North Petherwin on the 22nd August 1630 but so far this has not been investigated further. Apart from that possible reference, no further information about Dorothy and Degory has been found until they make their wills.

In his Will of 1658, Degory leaves the residue of his estate to Dorothy after making a bequest of £5 and one bed to Jane Gallsery. His will was proved in 1660 and Michael Trease, the son of Michael and Thamsyn was one of the three persons who produced and signed the Inventory.

Dorothy wrote her will in August 1663 making 'kinswoman' Jane Galsworthy (the same beneficiary as in Degory's will) executrix and leaving the residue of her estate to her, after making a small bequest of some troughs to ' Michaell Treise the son of Michaell Treise of North Petherwin'.

The fact that neither Degory nor Dorothy leave bequests to any children implies that they had no surviving children but is not conclusive. The very close relationship with Jane Galsworthy is currently unresolved but it is thought most likely that she was Dorothy's unmarried niece and that she was living with Digory and Dorothy, who had taken care of her following the death of her parents. This in turn would imply that Dorothy had had a sister, whose name is currently unknown and who had married into the Galsworthy family.

The Corwall OPC Database records the June 1663 marriage of Jane Galfrey (thought to be 'Galsery') to Thomas Goode and the following burials, 1684 - Jane Goode, 1696 - Thomas Goode, 1673/4 - Jacob Goode (who is possibly the Jacob Goode who carried out the inventory to Dorothy's will). This implies that Jane may be a generation later than Dorothy, possibly her (or less likely her husband's) niece and that Jacob Goode may be the same generation as Dorothy.
