William was the son of Michael a farmer of Pattacott in North Petherwin parish.

He is thought to have been born about 1555. He was named in the 1579 lease for Pattacott and in the 1580 North Petherwin Church accounts when he paid 12 pence for declining to take his turn as a "Guild Warden". His father Michael is listed in the 1581 Subsidy Roll for North Petherwin whereas William is not. This could be taken to indicate that William was living with his parents and helping them to farm Pattacott or that he was living elsewhere. No subsequent references have been found until possibly 1597 when the will of William Trease of North Petherwin was proved. This may be his will but unfortunately it has not survived and nothing further is known for sure, of either him or his family, assuming he had one. However, a Trease presence did continue at Pattacott and it seems safe to assume that the later families living there are related to the earlier ones.

After the 1597 probate record for William Trease of North Petherwin, the next references to Trease family members at North Petherwin are to Dorothy and Michael Trease. They both marry within a few years of one another and are certainly related to each other, possibly brother and sister. They may be children of William or of a brother of his, assuming he had one.

Links to narratives of Dorothy and Michael together with brief details of their lives are given below but it should be noted that currently there is NO definitive evidence that they are William's children: -
