FAMILY OF SAMUEL TRAIES and WILLMET BOWDEN [16s_wb]

In the absence of any baptismal record, the Samuel of this marriage was once thought to be the same Samuel who married Elizabeth CREESE in 1717 but it now seems more probable but not certain that he was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth and grandson of John and Lydia.

Samuel TRAIES
No baptism found but Crediton registers unreliable. The following points to Samuel (m1717 Elizabeth CREESE) having a son Samuel : -
1753	14 December 1753	QUARTER SESSIONS BUNDLES: 1754: EPIPHANY: RECOGNISANCES
Samuel Traise, junior, of Crediton [no status given]; Philip Milton of Crediton, sergemaker; and Stephen Hamlin of Crdeiton, sergeweaver,
are bound to appear at the next Session to prosecute and give evidence against Daniel Fish, Thomas Plymsell, John Philips and John Lee
for stealing three pairs of shoes from Samuel Traise, senior, of Crediton. [No sureties]
		(DRO QS/4/1754/Epiphany/RE/50)
The EXPLANATORY NOTES examine this further and conclude that he did exist and was the Samuel in the following marriage : -
1749	m. 16May1749	Crediton. Samuel TRAIES to Willmet BAWDON (FMP img)

It is thought that the Samuel TRAIES who died in Crediton in 1757 was Samuel's father.
In which case, the following entries probably refer to Samuel junior who, almost certainly, would have taken over his father's business.

1760	Qtr Sessions Epiphany (06Jan)	(DHC QS/4/1760/Epiphany/PR/12)

NOTE: No marriage record has been found so she appears to have died unmarried.
We know from the court case of Traies v. Traies 1807 that the Betty Traies who died in 1772 was the daughter of William & Rebecca.
No other Betty Traies fits the 1770 burial other than Samuel and Wilmet's daughter

NOTE: Like sister Betty, no marriage record has been found so she appears to have died unmarried.
The above is the only Crediton burial of a Lydia TRAIES after 1757 and it precisely matches her age
so it is a reasonable assumption it is her. From a family history point of view, it is a great shame
she didn't make it until the census on 6th June 1841 as it would have been interesting to see whom
she was staying with, if not alone.

Exeter & Plymouth Gazette - Saturday 4th July 1857

APPEAL CASE

THE PARISH OF CREDITON v. THE PARISH OF ST. DAVID'S EXETER

MY NOTE: Crediton was called upon by St. David's to pay for the cost of the removal to and maintenance at the County Asylum of Betty Folks, a pauper lunatic. Respondents said pauper had no settlement of her own so they were thrown back on her mother's settlement which was undoubtedly Crediton. Messrs Ring and Bere were representing the appellants, Crediton. Rest of report is shown below: -

"The history of the family appeared, from documents produced, to be this : -
On the 24th July 1779, the grandparents of the pauper lunatic - Samuel Traies and Sarah Harris were married at Crediton and subsequently had three daughters - Betty (the mother of the pauper lunatic) christened June 9th 1780; another daughter christened 1782 and Sarah christened 1790. Betty lived with her father and mother till her marriage, which was with a stranger, John Folks, a woolcomber, then working in Crediton, on the 29th November 1807. Soon after they were married, the husband, Folks, entered the militia and subsequently the Royal Marines which he went to Plymouth to join, leaving his wife at Crediton. She followed him to Plymouth, and soon after the peace was proclaimed in 1815, the pair reunited to Crediton, bringing with them a daughter (the pauper lunatic) who was less than two years old. Soon after this, Folks disappeared (deserting his wife and child) and had not since been heard of. The mother earned her living as best she could and her child was transferred to her sister, "Aunt Sarah" who bought it up till it was 17 or 18 years old, when the young woman took service in St Thomas. She was residing in St. Davids about the time the order was made. - Mr Ring contended that the case was defective, as the respondents had not negatived the settlement of the pauper lunatic's father, but the Recorder said the appellants might rely on any settlement they pleased, as it was for the appellants to show a better one. - Mr Ring said the answer to the case was this - the girl had been in service, and as there was no evidence whether her's was a weekly or yearly hiring, the presumption in law was that it was a yearly hiring and, if so, she had gained a settlement for herself. - Mr Bere took several objections to the magistrate's order - first they did not set out their power to send the woman to the asylum, this was the defect in it; then the order said in one place that the lunatic was not a pauper, and subsequently that she was a pauper, it should be shown when the lunatic became a pauper as she might have had money with her when the order was made; thirdly the order was made on the clerk of the Crediton Union, whereas it should have been made on the Board of Guardians. - The Recorder said he should confirm the order, subject to a case to be granted on all the points - Mr Ring applied for the case and it was granted."

If she was the mother of children baptised in 1795, 1798, and 1801 she would have been 46, 49, and 52 years old respectively when she gave birth. Births at such ages are unusual but not impossible. Late baptisms of the children are discounted as the William baptised in 1798 must have been born after the William who died in 1797. 2. The same parents appear to have christened another daughter Hannah in 1766 so Ann baptised 1749 may have died. If the names are considered different then John married Hannah Snow (the younger daughter) not Ann Snow. If he did marry the younger daughter, then the age at death is recorded incorrectly in the parish register or has been mistranscribed but it is also possible that the Hannah who was buried was not the wife of John Traies. As no other Hannah Traies appears to be in Crediton in 1831 who fits the age of 82, then the age would have to be incorrect in which case either the Hannah born 1756 or the Hannah born 1766 could be John's wife :- - The Hannah baptised 1766 would have been about 17 when married and 35 when she bore her last child. - The Hannah baptised 1756 would have been about 27 when married and 45 when she bore her last child. 1831 i. 10Nov1831 Crediton, Devon Hannah TRAIES age 82 (DCRST) Samuel TRAIES 1784 c. 30Mar1784 Stockleigh English, Devon. son John and Hannah TRAIES (IGI C052401) 1812 m. 31Mar1812 Holy Trinity. FAMILY of JOHN TRAIES and ANN POPHAM [18j_ap]

John was baptised in December 1793, the son of John and Hannah TRAIES. He married Ann POPHAM in Crediton on Feb 4th 1814 and they christened their son George 10 days later.

What happened after that is difficult to establish. The proximity of the marriage to the christening may imply that John was unwilling to marry Ann unless the child survived or it could be that Ann was unaware she was about to give birth - such things can happen. Whatever the truth, the wedding looks like a last minute necessity, rather than something both parties planned, and this may help us to interpret what happened subsequently.

There is no further record of any subsequent christenings at Crediton or possibly elsewhere (but see later) so it seems that John and Ann's son George, certainly conceived and possibly born before their marriage, was their only child.

Ann appears to have stayed in Crediton and to be the Ann TRAIES who was recorded in 1839 as having worked 25 years as a servant to Mrs EMES and in 1841 as a female servant working for Grace and Ann EVANS in Union Terrace, Crediton. The reason for the long standing arrangement with Mrs EMES coming to an end is not known. It may have been simply that Mrs EMES died although we have no evidence of that. A consequence for Ann was that she was not getting any younger and positions for older female servants may have been harder to find. That may be what prompted her to remarry in 1844, when she was about 60, to James TREMLETT, a local builder, who was about 5 years older than herself. It is thought that her second husband, James, died in 1855. Aged 75, she was visiting her only son George in London in 1861 when the census was taken on the 7th April 1861. It is thought that, although she was classed as a visitor in the census return, she may have already moved in with her son. On the 11th December 1862 she died at his new residence in Cripplegate and the following year, her son George was granted probate to her estate.

Ann's son George also appears to have stayed in Crediton where he is recorded on the 6th June 1841 living in "digs' and working as an agricultural labourer. However by 1851 he is renting accommodation in London in Golden Lane, Finsbury but still working as an unskilled general labourer. In 1853 he marries Martha HOLSGROVE at St Thomas Charterhouse church in Finsbury and in the marriage register gives the first definite information we have on his father since George's own christening almost 40 years earlier in Crediton. He merely states that his father is John TRAIES and is a bricklayer. He does not state that his father is dead and the absence of such a statement merely supports rather than proves the case that his father is alive.

Records exist of a John TRAIS/TREIS living in the same area of London as George. This John says he's a bricklayer born in Devon, the son of a John TRAIS, a labourer, so he matches our John. He also has a wife Ann, so at first sight, it appears that he is still with Ann POPHAM but the 1851 census indicates that this wife Ann was born in Wandsworth, Surrey, so he seems to be with a different Anne. He and his wife Ann christened a daughter Mary Ann TRAYS/TRAIS in Holborn in 1819 but she died in 1839. The address of Chatham Gardens given on Mary Ann's burial record is the same as that of John and Ann in the 1841 census so there seems little doubt that we are talking of the same John. Therefore John must have been living in London as early as 1819. The indications are that John had two separate families with Mary Ann living with her parents in Chatham Gardens, Shoreditch, London in 1839 and George renting accommodation in Crediton close to his mother in 1841. For this reason, it is felt that John and Ann separated shortly after their marriage, with John going to London where he met up with and married his second wife and with Ann staying in Crediton with her son.

Unfortunately, with the limited information we have, this currently seems the best interpretation of events but it may, of course, all change as further information comes to light. The big problem with this interpretation of the facts is that, if correct, then both parties committed bigamy, albeit consensual as their marriage had broken down at least 30 years previously. No second marriage record has been found for John and Ann in London and it is possible that they simply lived together and never married. It is conceivable that John's second wife, Ann, may be the Mary Ann LANGLEY, whom he married in 1852, but there is no apparent reason for him marrying her then, unless he had only just got to hear about his first wife's remarriage. The only daughter found from John's second relationship was named Mary Ann and she may have been named after his wife. A more likely scenario is that John remarried after his second wife Ann died. This fits with the description "widower" recorded on the marriage register entry for his marriage to Mary Ann. In June 1852 an Ann TRAIS was buried in Golden Lane cemetery which is close to where John and Ann and John's son George were recorded living. Although this Ann's recorded age at death of 84 seems rather high, it is not too far away from the age of 78 recorded for her, just one year earlier, in the 1851 census.

John's uncle William also worked in the building trade. His employer, John PRAWL, kept a detailed diary, which has survived, and records the names of William's work colleagues. These include a TREMBLET, who could well be the James TREMBLETT, builder, mentioned above, or a relative of his, and a HOLSGROW, who may be related to John's daughter in law Martha HOLISGROVE.

FAMILY of WILLIAM TRAIES and MARY HOOPER [17w_mh]

William was christened in Holy Trinity Church, Crediton on the 2nd of October 1763, the son of Samuel and Willmet TRAIES. He became a builder and it is thought that he probably worked as a general labourer for local builders when he was young, as no apprenticeships for him have been found.

On the 19th November 1786 he married Mary HOOPER. It is thought that she was baptised in December 1762, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth HOOPER, but other than that, far we have no further information about her. About three years after his marriage, possibly earlier, William started working for a local builder, John PRAWL, and when John died in 1822 continued working for the same building firm which then passed to his son-in-law John BERRY. His employer assembled teams for the various building projects with the rate of pay depended on the pricing of the job and the amount of work done, which obviously could be seriously affected by the weather. William must have been one of the best workers as, by 1793, he was the highest paid of all of them, sometimes getting as much as his employer paid himself. In that year he averaged 9s 6d on a good week and sometimes as much as 1s 10d a day. William often worked on several projects simultaneously. The names of some of his working colleagues on other teams can be recognised from the family history of his nephew John who also worked in the building trade as a bricklayer in London, e.g the teams of TREMBLET and EASTBROOK, STEPHEN and HOLSGROW.

In 1815 William was living as a yearly tenant in one of 3 adjoining cottages in what was then known as Broad Street, Crediton but subsequently became known as Crediton High Street. In 1827 William was affluent enough to purchase all three properties from the executors of the will of Mrs Mary PRIDSEY. In 1832 they were destroyed in a fire and William built 5 new cottages on the same plot. He and Mary occupied one and let out the other four, which presumably would give them a nice income when William finally retired. Four years later he still seems to have been working but possibly was about to retire as, in November 1836, he was presented with a long service award at a local show in recognition of the 47 years he had worked with Mr PRAWL and his son-in-law Mr BERRY.

In 1837 Mary died. After Mary's death William continued living in the same cottage he had built until he himself died in 1848, aged 86.

William and Mary had seven children : -

Many of this firm's account and day books have survived. Firm was begun by John PRAWL in the 1770s in Crediton.
They refer to "Traise" many times e.g 30May1796 "Self, Traise and Bery at Fulford.." etc.
Traise was one of the best paid workers. His earnings over 3 weeks in 1793 are shown as 9/6d, 7/4d, and 6/3d and he is recorded with a daily rate of 1/10d, the same as Prawl. Some workers got 1/2d per day. Traise is recorded in 1794, Jan & Aug 1796, Jan & Aug 1816 but may not be the same Traise. One employee, Short, earnt 64% of what Traise earnt.
Day Books had headings e.g. "Traise and Minard at Great Lee putting in windows (05Aug1816).

The late MR TRAIES, the eminent painter, died at his residence, Parker's Well Cottage, Topsham-road, on Sunday, in the eighty-third year of his age. It is not for us to lift the curtain of the dying chamber of this glorious old painter. 'William Jackson, born in this city 29th May, 1730, died 5th July, 1803. In the science of music an eminent professor; whose genius united elegant expression, pure and original melody, with peculiar delicacy of harmonic combination. In painting, in literature, in every liberal study that enlightens the intellect, or expands the heart, his attainments were rare and distinguished. A writer novel and acute in observation; a correct and discriminating critic; endeared to his select associates by a conversation and demeanour of impressive and fascinating simplicity. Mary, wife of John Downman, Esq., (R. A.) who was also buried here, directed this monument to be put up to her father and herself, desiring no other memorial than that she was the daughter of William Jackson'

William Jackson, in his will of 1803, refers to - wife Mary, daughter Mary (MY NOTE: who would be a spinster in 1803), son Thomas and 'natural' son - son of J-ne Bradford - whom he wishes to take the name William Jackson.

CONCLUSIONS
John DOWNMAN R.A. cannot be the father of Maria Richards DOWNMAN : -
- Maria and her sister Frances were baptised in Devon during the years that John was living in London.
- John does not mention Maria & her siblings in his Will although they were alive.
- John did paintings of his known children Isabella, Damon and Charles but none exist for Maria and her siblings.
- No researcher into his life has found evidence of a marriage in 1790 or having any of the children recorded from that marriage.

The father of Maria Richards Downman was almost certainly the son of Hugh Downman and Ann Richards and a cousin of John Downman R.A.

Sunmmary - William TRAIES - landscape artist

Source: Dev Ass. Vol 14, P312. in Art in Devonshire - Part II by George Pycroft

TRAIES, WILLIAM, landscape painter, born at Crediton in 1789, one year earlier than his friend and brother-artist John GENDALL.

Like all men who have succeeded in art, he showed his talent early in life. He was at first a clerk in Exeter Post-office, at that time in the Cathedral yard, and he and John Gendall used to go out sketching together and compare their drawings, as two young friends naturally would. One of his first successful efforts was illustrating a work in natural history by Dr. Neal, a Scotch physician. His talent was early recognised and encouraged by the Rev. Gayer Patch, rector of Trinity in Exeter, a worthy son of the well remembered hospital surgeon of Exeter. Mr Patch introduced him to the Rev. Palk Carrington, rector of Bridford. In him he found a genial and a kindred spirit, and for years he spent his autumn at the rectory, amidst the beautiful scenery of that neighbourhood. The rector and the artist strolled together and traversed the surrounding neighbourhoods, sketching scenes in Bradford Wood, among others which the artist made famous in "The Gypsy Encampment." Captain Parker of Whiteway, the father of Montague E. N. Parker, late M.P. for Devonshire, was a warm friend and patron of Traies and for a long time his studio and residence were at Whiteways, where the charming scenes in this locality were depicted by the artist. The late Mr. Robert Saunders, Mr. William Miles, and Mr. Kendall, were warm friends and patrons, indeed for the first of these he could not finish his paintings fast enough. In 1820 and on one subsequent occasion he was an exhibitor at the Royal Academy. His paintings were much prized in his native country. He contrived to bathe his distances in atmosphere and to get light and space in his skies in a way few artists could excel. His ravines and waterfalls in the Ruysdael style will always be valued, but there is a want of lightness and variety of tint in his foliage, which gives a heaviness to it which was the fault of the landscape painters of the age in which he lived. His second son, Frank, inherited much of his father's genius. He painted pictures of cattle scenes, and was so promising an artist that there can be no doubt that had he not been cut off in early life he would have made his mark among our English cattle painters. The early death of the son was a source of enduring grief to his worthy father.

He died at his residence, Parker's Well Cottage, Topsham Road, Exeter, on 23rd April 1872 aged 82 years.

OBITUARY - William Francis TRAIES

The following appears on page 37 of "THE TABLET" published on 1st November. 1890

A correspondent, signing himself "R. W. M. P.", sends to The Guardian some brief notice of the late Father Traies - a notice which for its singular beauty and sincerity of language, as well as for the dead priest's memory of whom it speaks, we cannot choose but print :

On Thursday, the fifth inst., there passed away one who was in all lines of thought essentially an Oxford man, though not known, except by name, to more than a small handful in the Umversity. The Rev. W. F. Traies, M.A., Fellow of Merton, was formerly a scholar of Worcester, and obtained a First Class in Moderations, and a Second Class in the Final Classical School in 1872. Among his contemporaries in his own college he was a man greatly beloved. He was somewhat shy and retiring except among intimate friends, but with them his conversation was always quick and full of interest, stainless and pure, with a great sense of humour flashing out on frequent occasions. As a letter writer he particularly excelled, being gifted with a perfect hand and much brilliancy of epigram. There was something wonderfully winning about him, and he gained the respect of men of very different tastes. To those who knew him best it was no surprise when Merton, out of a large field of over thirty candidates, elected him to one of two lay fellowships. As there was then no sphere of work vacant in college, it was not long before he left for London, and, after taking holy orders, worked for some years as curate, first in St. George's, Bloomsbury, under Mr. Capel Cure, and then in St. John's, Red Lion-square, under Mr. Webber. His life as a London curate was marked by great diligence and devotion. But he was not destined to continue in the English Church. He was a man of much ecclesiastical reading - perhaps chiefly in a special direction - and for some years had entertained feelings of uneasiness as to what began to appear to him to be the paramount claims of the Roman obedience. These views continued to assert themselves, and none of the ordinary explanations appeared to him sufficient. He gave up clerical work, and for a year devoted himself to patient study with regard to points that troubled him. At last, though not till after full consideration, he was " received " at Farm-street in 1887 or shortly afterwards. After this step he rarely returned to Oxford. He threw himself warmly into the duties of his new position, and after a theological course was admitted to the priesthood. At one time he worked in Lincoln's-inn-fields, at another in Plymouth, where he had charge of a mission. More recently he was Prefect of Studies at St. Edmund's College Ware and for the past year he has been connected with St. George's College, Southwark, In every position his life was one of very deep devotion. He lived for the other world with a supreme and unquestioning faith. It is only fair to say that he never regretted the step he took thirteen years ago. He claimed to have found within the Roman communion the satisfying of his soul. One point was very characteristic of the man - he never had a hard word for those he had left, though sometimes a very gentle smile if he was reminded of some of the incidents of his past. "Genial, frank, and kindly as ever" was the verdict of an old friend. No man, with one exception, has passed over from Oxford to Rome in the last 15 years with one-tenth part of his ability and spiritual power combined with such remarkable grace and beauty of character. His profound humility gave him a touching charm of manner, the courtesy of bearing and respectful deference belonging rather to an older generation. To this was added the sweetness of expression of a face of most appealing and pathetic beauty. It had a singular look of Dr. Liddon - clear cut, refined, and saintly. Many throughout the kingdom will be glad to know that his death was peaceful and painless. He had returned to his home near Exeter for a short holiday, and on the way, or before leaving town, must have laid the foundation of his illness. In a few days typhoid fever declared itself, and though everything was done that medical skill and loving nursing could suggest, the end came in the early morning of Thursday week. On Wednesday, the 22nd inst., in the little churchyard of Countess Weir, near Exeter, he was laid to his rest, with the rites of that Church to which he had given his heart and the earnest service of his later years. How great his loss is to his friends these imperfect words can only very faintly convey. Such deep affection and such tender sympathy can never be replaced. At forty, or a little under, the chapter of his life has closed. Requiem aeternam clona ei, Domine. Et lux perpetua lureat et%.

FAMILY of ALICE TRAIES and JAMES WALLWORK [20jw_a]

Alice was the daughter of Frank Downman TRAIES and Maria BEVAN. Both her parents died young and she went into service.
Her birth registration has not been found. It was probably, as for her brothers and sisters, registered in Kensington and may have been mistranscribed.
Alice did marry in 1893 and appears to have been back in service by the time of the 1901 census so maybe her husband died.

FAMILY of GEORGE RUDGE and MARIA TRAIES [20gr_m]

Maria was the daughter of William Hugh Downman TRAIES and Miriam CARTWRIGHT. Her first marriage has not been found but there were no children from the marriage as Maria states in the 1911 census that she had two children who were both alive and must be the two children traced from her second marriage to George RUDGE. After their marriage they appear to have lived in Mauritius for a while where their first daughter was born.
