This branch of the family may have existing male descendants but has not been investigated further.

The information is posted to support the ROOTSCHAT "interactive" research into James Traies born 1785 but may be of interest to others. Please also note there is no firm evidence that the TRAIES family is related to the TREASE/TREAYS/TRAYES families on the main website.

Research is ongoing. The tree will be changed as more information comes to light and significant changes recorded in the Change History page. Details of other Trease families being researched can be seen on the Research tab on the main menu bar above.

You should note that different interpretations of the information could place the person to whom it refers in another family and the information shown may be inaccurate e.g. it may have been transcribed incorrectly or the source document itself may simply be wrong.

Dates and abbreviations are explained on the Codes & Conventions page

Family of SAMUEL TRAIES and ELIZABETH nee CHUBB [17s_ec]

Some Traies family trees show Samuel son of John & Lydia as marrying Willmet BOWDEN in 1749, but there are good arguments for that son being the Samuel who married Elizabeth CHUBB. The explanatory notes to Generation 18 of the family tree examine the possibilities regarding this family. Some observations are: -

  1. Samuel's brother John in his will of 1787 leaves bequests to nephew Joseph Treais and to a nephew who is a tucker in Exeter.
  2. Samuel and Elizabeth's son Joseph is the only Joseph Traies known to be alive in 1787 and another of their sons, Samuel, is described on his death certificate as a tucker of Exeter - both fit the descriptions of the nephews. Samuel and Willmet nee Bowden had three sons - none called Joseph, all living in Crediton, and the one whose occupation is known was a mason.
  3. Samuel was christened in 1731 - had he married Willmet he would have been a minor aged about 18 at time of marriage, assuming he was christened when a baby.

It is thought that James is the son of Samuel and Elizabeth nee CHUBB but he does appear to have his first marriage quite late in life at 37 and after that he strangely marries for a further three times. The deaths of the previous wives align with the subsequent marriages so it does appear that their husbands are the same James.
In John TRAIES's Will of 1787 he leaves bequests to "my two nephews which is soldiers Joseph and his brother" . . "and my two nephews which are tuckers". We know that nephew William is a soldier so that makes Joseph and William the soldiers and leaves Samuel and James as the tuckers so the description "mariner" seems inappropriate for James, the son of Samuel and Elizabeth nee CHUBB.
One possibility is that this James is the son of Joseph and Mary LAKE. So far no baptisms from that marriage have been found. The 1803 marriage to Sally CREES is unlikely to be a son of that marriage as James would be too young but the 1815, 1820, and 1833 marriages are possible.
The following entry may relate to James : -

1808	i. 27Mar1808 Stoke Damerel. James TRAIES age 40 (FMP image? MI?)
but needs further investigation. If he did die young, the next entry could be his wife's remarriage and would explain the lack of children and inability to find a burial record for her.
1816	m. 01Apr1816 Exeter, St Olave. Sally TRAIES married William WESTCOTT (ER)
If the 1803 marriage is of the older James and he did die in 1808 then the 1820 and 1833 marriages would be for a different James (perhaps a son of one of his brothers).
The 1839 burial of 19 year old Harriett TRAIES in Bethnal Green, London matches his daughter Harriett christened in 1819. In which case, the Elizabeth TRAIES who witnessed the following two marriages in Bethnal Green on the same day in 1834 may be his last wife Elizabeth, widowed name HOWE, but whose maiden name we don't know : -
m. 27Jul1834 Bethnal Green by Banns. (ANCimg)
John LAKE otp bachelor (signs) & Jane Welch TUCKER otp spinster (marks)
Witnesses: Elizabeth TRAIES, Saml AMES (both sign)
m. 27Jul1834 Bethnal Green by Banns. (ANCimg)
Robert Francis SCAIFE otp bachelor & Mary Ann TUCKER otp spinster (both sign)
Witnesses: Elizabeth TRAIES, Saml AMES (both sign)
NOTE 1 Saml AMES witnesses all other marriages in this register made around that time.
Elizabeth TRAIES signs only these two and definitely uses spelling TRAIES.

Elizabeth is in some way connected with the brides &/or grooms of these marriages. Robert Frances SCAIFE was baptised on 17Jul1815 s/o Samuel Thomas & Mary Ann SCAIFE, painter in the Bethnal Green area, and looks unlikely to be the connection.
John LAKE names a daughter Elizabeth TRAYES LAKE, so either he or his wife appears a possible connection. In the 1851 census he said he was born in Exeter, Devon, aged 37 and a carpenter. Family trees (ANC) state that he was born in Magdalen Street, Exeter in 1814 and his wife was born 17Apr1816 in Bute Street, Plymouth and baptised 06May1816 at Brook Street Independent, Tavistock, Devon d/o James TUCKER & Jennifer WELCH. Also Mary Ann TUCKER was born in Plymouth in 1812 and appears to be a sister of Jane Welch TUCKER.

In 1775, when he was 18, William enrolled in the army. He was 44 when he married in 1802 and was then described as a widower. Sometime between these two dates he appears to have married but there is uncertainty as to when and where.

POLICE INTELLIGENCE - Marlborough Street

Mr Fraies, a tin-plate manufacturer stated that on the previous evening himself and friend went into the Nag's Head, kept by John Hancourt, and requested to have a game of bagatelle, but a man who was in the room said they were informers and several men being fetched from the "Free Concert" in the up-stairs room, they rushed the two men and after having beaten them severely, one made a snatch at Mr Fraies' watch and carried off his gold chain and seal. The complainant exhibited a pair of black eyes. The landlord was sent for (the house only being in Carnaby-street) two or three times by the Magistrate, but could not be found.
Mr Conant said it was a shameful thing but if he could not identify any of the parties, he could not assist him
Mr Fraies expressed his inability to do this and withdrew.

Belfast Morning News - 17 October 1863

A PENALTY FOR KISSING - Frederick TRAYES the son of a shopkeeper in High Street, Notting Hill was summoned to the Hammersmith Police Court on Friday, for assaulting Henrietta Kaill, a young girl, by kissing her against her inclination on the 27th ult in Kensington. It appeared that the complainant was walking along when the defendant, who was a stranger, came up to her and said 'Don't be cross, my dear". He caught hold of her cloak and nearly pulled her down. She got away from him when he followed her and wanted to kiss her. She refused to allow him, when he struck her on the back, caught hold of her by the cheek, and kissed her by force. The defendant denied he was the person, but the magistrate thought the identity proved and fined her 20s and 15s costs.

Family of Joseph and Mary TRAIES nee LAKE [18j_ml]

Apart from his marriage to Mary Lake in 1786 and a fleeting reference to him being a soldier in his Uncle's will, nothing more is known of him. If his wife was the Mary Trays, widow, who married in Exeter in 1797, then we now know he died young but there almost certainly were children. So far no christenings have been found. Any children of the earlier marriage would have been orphaned young - presumably they would have stayed with their mother after the remarriage. Some of the marriages of a James in the Exeter area currently attributed to his brother James could be those of a son of this marriage. There is also a possible Exeter LAKE family connection with the last marriage attributed to his brother.
