On the marriage certificate of Richard Gynn Trease on 11th November 1876 his wife is recorded as:-
Eliza Pearce, Age 21 years, Spinster of Carnworthy Water, Jacobstow (Father George Pearce (deceased) Cabman)
Here as in all the Warbstow Census Returns she gave her age as exactly the same as her husband RIchard Gynn Trease born circa 1855.
Her monumental inscription also confirms that birthdate by stating:-
In loving memory of Eliza the beloved wife of Richard Gynn Trease of Fern Grove, Warbstow who passed peacefully away on Monday Nov 15th 1915 aged 60 years
There is the problem of the variable spelling of the surname plus suspicions about her possibly too-equal age.
The Census Return below is the nearest found so far - it has the right Christian Name, approximate P* surname (may be Pieris on the
original but hard to make out - did they pronounce the name like the shrub and was the enumerator a horticulturist! ), the right area of
birth and the right father's Christian Name plus occupation. If that is her she was born 1851/2 and is thus 3 or so years older
than her husband.
