Jane was born during 1835 probably at Plymouth, Devon, where she was baptised, the daughter of
John and Esther Whitehouse
and the granddaughter of
William and Martha Uglow.
In 1865, when she was 30 years old, she married Charles Padman Brown at the Wesleyan Chapel in Bristol Road,
Birmingham. He was about three years younger than her and had been born in Grimsby, Lincolnshire during 1838. As yet his parentage is
unknown. He appears to have been a ‘Commercial Clerk’. Jane and Charles had four children, two sons and two daughters. In 1881, Minnie and
Louie, the daughters of Jane's brother, William, came to live with Jane and Charles' family at Kings Norton for a while.
- their first child, a son, was born in Birmingham during 1866 but died before he was christened.
- their second child, daughter Eleanor Trease, was born in Birmingham during 1868. She remained a spinster all her lfe. She spent "many happy
years of her life" working for the Trustees of Wesley Hall, Selly Park. She died in Bournville, Birmingham during 1951.
- son Charles Herbert was born during 1868 in Birmingham. He married and appears to have had five children.
Charles Herbert died in Alcester in 1943. Some time after his death, his wife and daughter, Iva, went to live in Weston-Super-Mare
where his wife died in 1952.
His daughter, Ethel, relates in a letter of 1961 'I can only think that the Cousin Charlie who caused the raised eyebrows was my
father, Charles Herbert Brown. His family were extremely religious in the narrow
Puritanical sense of the word & were life-long teetotalers. Father, bless him, was not in the least like that. I can only remember him
going to church three times, when I & my two younger brothers were married. He liked to spend Sunday mornings playing golf, if fine,
otherwise bridge. Also he was fond (but not over fond) of whisky. I can remember how, years ago, we teased him about the cost of living
going up to 12/6 a bottle!'
- daughter Iva Margaret was born in 1894 in Kings Norton. Iva remained a spinster all her life and died in Weston-Super-Mare in 1973.
