Early life

Elijah Treays was born in Stoke Damerel, Devon, on the 10th August 1857 to Elijah and Ann Treays. His father Elijah worked as a sawyer in the H.M.Dockyard. His grandparents Samuel and Ann Treays lived nearby at Middle Swilly. When he had finished his education he worked as an errand boy before taking on work, like his father, at the H.M.Dockyard where he undertook a variety of occupations most of which appeared involved with ironwork such as driller, ironsmith striker, iron bolt maker.

Marriage

In 1882 he married Mary May and they had three children, two boys and a girl.

Later Life

They remained living in the Stoke Damerel/Plymouth area for the rest of their lives. Elijah died there in 1923 aged 66 and Mary died there in 1946 aged 90.

Children

  • Son Elijah Ernest was born in 1883. Like his father and grandfather before him he was employed in H.M. Dockyard where he worked as an ironsmith striker and a blacksmith. In 1909 he married Ella Coulson and they had at least one child, a daughter. Elijah died in 1938 aged 55.

  • Daughter Catherine Violet was born in 1888. In 1909 she got married in East Stonehouse.

  • Son Arthur Stanley was born in 1892. In 1917 he probably enlisted in the Royal Navy. In the early 20s he visited both the USA and Canada possibly with the intention of deciding whether to emigrate. In 1924 he married Laura Kerswill in Plymouth. Arthur died in Plymouth in 1943 aged 50.
