This branch of the main family tree covers descendants of Samuel TREAYS, who married Mary SOUTHER in Quethiock in 1784, until the first half of the 19th century, or the first generation abroad for emigrants. Unlike his nephew William who signed his name "TREASE", Samuel signed his surname "TREAYS", as did many of his descendants who could write. Consequently descendants of the two families came to have what appear now to be different and unrelated surnames. In Samuel's time the surname spelt "TREASE" may have been used to indicate pronunciation as two separate syllables - "tre" and "ays". Then as now, some Cornish people stressed the second syllable and the first syllable would have had litle or no vowel sound. So the name would have sounded like Tr'-ays with the "tr" part sounding like the "Tre" in "Trelawney". In Devon, the name could have been pronounced with the emphasis on the first syllable as "Tree- ays", which is how the surname "TREAYS" is now normally pronounced.
The families shown on this tree are confined to those for which there is sound evidence of a relationship. There may be other families who are possibly related. Research is ongoing and the tree will be revised as new data is found. A summary of major changes is recorded in the Change History.

Much of the information shown on the tree came about as a result of research by a team of enthusiasts from the UK, USA, and Australia who worked together using the facilities provided by Rootschat. We all contributed but particular thanks are due to "Deb, USA" whose diligent research into the name variants uncovered information that would have remained undiscovered by the rest of us. As at July 2014 the Rootschat research threads are still available and make interesting reading on the value of this type of research. Starting from the original request for help from Australia, you can see how the research gathered momentum as more contributors joined to form an "ad hoc' international team. The team quickly uncovered far more than a solitary researcher could do - it also made for great fun and you got a real sense of achievement as the family tree unravelled.
