Early life
William was born in Sheerness/Minster, Isle of Sheppey , Kent in 1858 the son of Peter and Catherine nee Buchan and grandson of Peter and Margaret nee Olver.
The 1881 census records him living at home with his parents on the Isle of Sheppey and working as an Engine Fitter.Marriage
On the 31st August 1885 in Minster in Sheppey church, William married Margaret Jane Ann King, a local girl who was three year younger than him and the daughter of William Walter King. They settled in the Sheerness area of Kent, where they brought up a family which consisted of at least five children, three sons and two daughters, with one of the sons dying in infancy. William continued to work as an engine fitter certainly until 1901 when the census records him living with his family at 29 King Street Sheerness.
Later Life
William died at 23 Winstanley Road in 1921 aged 62 and was buried in Halfway Cemetery Sheerness. His wife, Margaret, outlived him by 13 years dying at 253 High Street in 1934, aged about 74. She too was buried in Halfway Cemetery Sheerness on the 31st January 1934.
Children
The children that have been traced so far are: -
- Son William King who was born in Sheerness/Minster, Isle of Sheppey, Kent in 1886 and baptised at Holy Trinity Church on the 8th September 1886. In the 1901 census return he is recorded as a 'telegraph messenger' age 15 living with his parents. In 1912 he married Elsie E M Wills in Sheppey but the marriage appears to have been childless. William died in 1954. Elsie's death has not been found so far.
- Son John Cleaveland was born in Sheerness/Minster, Isle of Sheppey, Kent in 1889 and died there 2 years later. He was buried in Halfway Cemetery Sheerness on the 4th April 1891.
- Son Walter Robert was born in Sheerness/Minster, Isle of Sheppey, Kent in 1892. In 1915 he married Hilda M Benstead in Sheppey and they had at least three children. Walter died in 1962, and was buried in Sheppey Cemetery on 31st October of that year. So far his wife's death has not been traced. Of the three children identified so far - Marjorie may have married young in 1936 to Norman Edwards, Roland died aged 21, and Derek married Jean Wickham in Bath in 1954.
- Daughter Ethel Margaret was born in Sheerness/Minster, Isle of Sheppey, Kent during 1898 and married Edwin Pash in 1921.
- Daughter Lilian May was born in Sheerness/Minster, Isle of Sheppey, Kent during 1903. She died aged 17 in 1920 and was buried in Halfway Cemetery Sheerness.
