Peter and Catherine nee Buchan see Family Tree     (generation 19 P&CB Peter = Catherine)
(Revised on 20 Jan 2008: children - births/deaths Peter & Margaret, William now found in 1901 census)

Peter was born in Stoke Damerel, Devon during 1828 the son of Peter and Margaret nee Olver and grandson of Samuel and Mary nee Souther. He was baptised in the Morice Street Wesleyan Chapel/Church in Devonport, [Baptismal record ‘Trayes’.] with his brother George, probably his twin.

In the 1851 Census, when he was 22 years old, he was recorded as unmarried, living with his widowed father, and his occupation was ‘Shipwright (Apprentice).

In 1854 when he was 25 years old he married Catherine Amelia Buchan. Catherine had been born in July 1826, the daughter of William Buchan and Catherine Hoskins (married Stoke Damerel 1811) and about a month later had, like Peter, been christened in the Morrice Street Wesleyan Church. However their marriage took place in Poplar, London (better known now as the Canary Wharf area of London’s Docklands). It would appear likely that Peter had moved to the South-East as part of his career development.

In the 1871 Census Peter’s occupation was recorded as ‘Shipwright’ and in the 1881 Census as ‘Shipwright (Leading Man)’, at both times the family were living at Minster on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent. Peter and Catherine appear to have had at least three children, one son and two daughters, but one daughter died in infancy.

Peter died in Camberwell (possibly the hospital there) during 1886, aged only 57. Catherine died on the Isle of Sheppey during 1902, aged about 74, probably whilst living with her widowed daughter Eliza Jane.

The births and deaths of two further 'Treays' children are recorded in the registers for Sheppey :-

It is highly probable that these register entries relate to two further children of Peter and Catherine as they appear to be the only Treays family producing children at that time who were living in the area.
