Early life
Samuel David Martin Treays was born in Stoke Damerel, Devon, on the 25th May 1853 to Elijah and Ann Treays. His father Elijah worked as a sawyer in the H.M.Dockyard. His grandparents Samuel and Ann Trays lived nearby at Middle Swilly. When he was 10 years old he started work with a baker.
Marriage
On Christmas Eve 1876 he married Mary Amelia Shepherd at St James the Great Church, Keyham. That year was a "White Christmas" year in the West and unfortunately for them, it was snowing and the horse which was drawing their carriage slipped and fell breaking the shafts. About 5 years after he married, he went to work at the Dockyard in Devonport and stayed working there for a further 42 years. Samuel and Mary had nine children, two of whom died young. A newspaper article of 1926 celebrating the 50th anniversary of their wedding stated that they then had 6 children and 14 grandchildren.
Later Life
Samuel was 70 years old when he retired from the Dockyard and was presented with an Imperial Service medal. Altogether he had worked for 60 years so he deserved to have an enjoyable retirement. Certainly the newspaper article written when Samuel and Mary were respectively 73 and 72 stated that they both enjoyed the best of health. Samuel died in 1931 aged 77. Mary lived for a further 12 years before dying in Plymouth in 1943 aged 88.

Report in Western Morning News. A "WHITE CHRISTMAS"
To-day marks the 50th anniversary of Mr & Mrs Samuel D Treays of Bedford St. Ford Devonport who were married on Christmas Eve 1876 at St James the Great Church, Keyham.
That year was evidently one of those rare occasions when there is a really "white" Christmas in the West for Mr Treays related to a "Western Morning News" reporter how they were married in a snowstorm. The ground was covered with ice and snow he said, and on leaving the church, the horse which was drawing their carriage slipped on the slippery surface, fell down, and broke the shafts.
He commenced work when he was 10 years old, being employed by a baker. He served for 42 years in the Dockyard at Devonport and was presented with an Imperial Service medal. He worked altogether for 60 years before his retirement.
