(Revised Nov 2011: Text updated and source data added)

James was born on Tuesday 18th January 1848 at Warbstow Cross the son of James and Elizabeth Gynn and a grandson of William and Martha Uglow.

James trained as a carpenter. When he was 23 he was lodging in Cross Street, Camborne. Three years later in 1874 he married Elizabeth Hannah Hancock and he and his family appear to have settled in the Camborne area but regularly changed home. James seems to continue to work as a carpenter working some or all of his time in the tin mines in the area but in an 1883 Trade Directory he is recorded as a "tin stream machine maker" of Vyvyan Row, Camborne. He subsequently continues to record his occupation under the general heading of "carpenter" so perhaps the "tin stream machine maker" classification of 1883 involved a specialised form of carpentry rather than metal working.

James died in the Redruth area in 1920 at age 72 and his wife died there 15 years later in 1935 aged 83. James and Elizabeth had at least nine children : -

William Trease a striker employed in Messrs Holman Bros' smith shop, accidentally got his foot in a tank of boiling water on Tuesday morning, and badly scolded it. He was taken to his home and attended by Dr Telfer Thomas who ordered his removal to the Miner's Hospital, Redruth.
1932(Cornishman 17Mar1932)
SUDDEN DEATH AT CAMBORNE
The death took place suddenly at Camborne, on Wednesday morning, of Mr William Trease, aged 54 of No 10 Sting Park-road, Camborne.
Mr Trease, who was unmarried, had been employed at Messrs Holman Bros., for about 38 years as a smith's strike.
He went to his work at about 8 o'clock this morning as usual and apparently in normal health. He was working at an anvil with Mr William Yeo a smith of 65 Church View-road, Tuckingmill.
Mr Yeo turned away from his work for a moment in order to get some wire which he required and when he turned back to the anvil he found Mr Trease lying on the ground apparently dead.
Dr Coldrey was sent for and on his arrival he found that death had taken place.
Mr Trease was well known in Camborne, and resided with his mother Mrs Anna Trease, a widow. So far as was known, he had always enjoyed good health.
