Mary & John Daniel Whitehouse

Early Life

Mary was born in Burton-on-Trent in late 1862 the daughter of John Trease and Eliza Spencer and the granddaughter of John Trease and Esther Whitehouse. She spent her early childhood in Burton-on-Trent where her father worked as a Brewery Traveller or Agent probably for one of the brewery companies based there. For a period her Aunt Jane Trease, who was a schoolmistress, lived with the family so it is thought Mary would have received a good education.

Sometime after 1871 and before her mother's death in 1876, the family moved to Ashby de la Zouch which was where her mother's family lived. She was just 13 when her mother died. After her mother's death it appears she stayed living with her father in Ashby for a further 6 years until he died in 1882. After her father's death, she found work in domestic service. By 1891 she was working as a nurse to the family of Benjamin Gilbert, a tentmaker, living in Cambridge Street, Ladywood, Birmingham.

Married Life

On the 2nd of November 1892, by which time Mary had moved to London and was living at 97 Paragon Road, Hackney, she got married in Hackney to John Daniel Whitehouse, a farmer living at Moor End Green House in Erdington. Mary's sister, Alice, and her husband, Edward Freeland, witnessed the marriage as did Mary's sister-in-law Jane Whitehouse and one Charles Peat. Like Mary's parents, both of John's parents, John Bullivant Whitehouse and Jane Reeve had died. The year before the marriage John's grandmother, Elizabeth Whitehouse nee Bullivant, had died and John had inherited a farm and a considerable acreage of land at Erdington in Birmingham (which is now a housing estate called Moor End).

It is not known how John and Mary came to meet but it may be that Mary had at some time worked for John Whitehouse's family. Originally it was thought that John Whitehouse may have been related to the family of Esther Whitehouse, Mary's grandmother, but no connection has ever been established between the two families. Mary's daughter Louisa stated that 'there was never any mention ... that the name 'Whitehouse' was associated on her mother's side as well as her father's", and felt that "such a fact would surely have been mentioned".

After their marriage, John and Mary appear to have lived on the family farm in Moor End Lane, Erdington. They were certainly there in 1901. They had two children who survived infancy. Their first was a daughter,
Louisa Diana Mary Whitehouse, born on the 13th August 1983 and their second was a son, John Bullivant Whitehouse, born on the 14th March 1896.

Early death

Like her mother, sister, and brother before her, Mary died young in late 1909 aged only 47. She had been the last surviving member of John and Eliza Trease's family. Her husband, John Daniel Whitehouse, died shortly after on the 14th February 1910 at Moor End Green House, Erdington, Warwickshire, aged 60, leaving the two children Louisa and John orphaned at ages 16 and 13 respectively.

After the death of both their parents, the two children continued living in Moor End Lane where their aunt Jane Diana Whitehouse, who was then just 60, looked after them with the support of a domestic servant. Daughter Louisa never married and it is surmised that she would have stayed living with her Aunt Jane until Jane died in 1933(?).

Mary & John Daniel Whitehouse

Louisa Diana Mary Whitehouse was born on the 13th August 1893 in Birmingham. After her parents' deaths she was brought up by her aunt Jane Diana Whitehouse and it is surmised that she would have stayed living with her aunt possibly until she died. She became very active in the local community in Erdington. Rather than marry and dedicate herself to bringing up a family, it seems that she chose to dedicate her life to community work. She was certainly supportive of her local church and the girl guides and brownies and became a JP.

All the information about Louisa was obtained from public records. Although no contact had been made with her or any of her friends or relatives, Louisa herself, in July 1968, made contact with Professor George Trease at Nottingham University. She stated that she had been quite young when her mother, Mary Trease, died, had lost touch with the Trease family, and was anxious to trace relatives of her mother's family. Unfortunately research into family history was far more difficult then, in those pre-internet days, and insufficient information was available at that time to definitely establish the family links that are now given here on this website. Copies of the letters received can be seen on this link. They were written by another on her behalf.

Louisa's last known address before she went into a nursing home was "Poplars" 150 Orphanage Road Erdington. She died aged 91 at St. Faith's Nursing Home Cheltenham on the 10th March 1984.

Mary & John Daniel Whitehouse

John Bullivant Whitehouse was born in Birmingham on the 14th March 1896. After he and his sister were orphaned in 1910, they lived with their Aunt Louisa at Moor End Lane, Erdington.

John became a surveyor. He married twice, the first time being in 1922. By this first marriage, he appears to have had at least 6 children, four of whom are known to have survived. His wife died sometime after 1937 and in 1945, when he was nearing 50, John married again. His second wife, a 44 year old widow, had been born in the Birmingham area in 1901 and had first married in 1925. She appears to have had no children by her first marriage and not surprisingly, in view of her age, this second marriage also appears to have been childless. John died in Gloucestershire in the 1970s leaving his second wife a widow for the second time.
