Family of James and Hannah TREISE nee PARTON [17j_hp]

James was baptised in Callington in 1752, the son of Charles and Mary nee HAYE and whose grandparents are thought to be John and Hannah nee AUSTIN. He went to Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire, and married a local girl there in 1788. It is not known why James should have gone so far away. If it was for work reasons what trade did he have that he needed to go so far to use it? Could his employer have moved there? In the 19th century some Southern parishes had arrangements with Northern parishes to send paupers to work in the mills but it is unlikely such arrangements existed in the 18th century.

On the same parish register transcription as James's children appear is the following baptism entry:- c. 24Feb1793, Newcastle under Lyme, Martha TREISE daur of Thos TREISE (IGI P010291) James's daughter Hannah TREISE was christened 18 days earlier. Is the 'Thos' above a transcription error for 'Jas'? in which case Martha would have to have been a twin sister of Hannnah or was there a Thomas related to James also living there or was it simply another family with a similar sounding name?

In November 1804 James died and was buried in St Giles church, Newcastle under Lyme. Hannah was at that time pregnant with son Samuel and the local parish had to wait until after her son Samuel was born to return the family to Callington to prevent them becoming a burden on the inhabitants of Newcastle under Lyme parish. When they returned to Callington, the local parish authorities arranged apprenticeships there for the two sons who were over 7 years old, believed to be the minimum age at the time for such apprenticeships, and made similar arrangements for son Samuel in 1813 once he reached the same age.

Callington parish supported the family and references to the support given have been recorded in the Callington Vestry Minutes. The Minutes for the period around 1820 make mention of a Mary TREISE who has a child and appears destitute. This Mary has not been identified and it is thought possible that James may have chosen to name one of his daughters Mary after his mother and she may be another daughter of his whose baptism has not been located.

RETURN TO TENTATIVE FAMILY TREE

Family of Charles and Mary TREISE nee POWELL [18c_mp]

There is not a lot of evidence that this Charles is the son of James and Hannah Treise but Charles Traise is an uncommon name and, if, as is thought, James was the son of Charles and Mary, he would be likely to name his first son Charles and if that son died young he would be likely to name a subsequent son Charles (which he appears not to have done). It is therefore possible that a son Charles did survive in which case this Charles fits with regard to age and occupation but further evidence is required.

Another possibility is that Charles is the son of John TREISE thought to be the son of Charles TREISE and Mary HAYE.

Hannah Treise was the daughter of James and Hannah Treise. In 1806 she was apprenticed to William Moon. She had three base children baptised in 1813, 1817, and 1821. The father may have been William Moone whose will was proved at the PCC on 18th June 1833 (PROB 11/1817) when he was described as Yeoman.

Family of Richard and Mary Ann TREISE nee SYMONS [18r_ms]

Richard Treise was the son of James and Hannah Treise, born in Newcastle under Lyme about 1797. His baptism record has not been found. After he marries in 1833 only one baptism has been found between then and 1839. In the 1861 census, a granddaughter Elizabeth J Treise aged 5 is staying with them. This implies an older son who has not been traced so far.

Family of Samuel and Jane TREISE nee SECCOMBE? [18s_xx]

Samuel Treise was the son of James and Hannah Treise. His marriage to Jane may have taken place about 1837 in Callington. Although the marriage record has not yet been found it is surmised that she may be the daughter of Nicholas Seccombe baptised 1816 in Calstock. So far the Samuel who married Elizabeth DAW in Callington in 1827 has not been identified with certainty. It is thought that this may be this Samuel and that his first wife may have died childless in 1833.

NOTE: This appears to be the correct birth registration but it is 3 years before what appears to be the marriage.
If mother Elizabeth Ann TRAYs did die at end of 1882 aged 43 then she would have been minor when child born.
The fact that the daughter was said to be the daughter of John's parents is thought to be a deliberate "white lie" to conceal
that her mother was about 16/17 years old when conceived and that her parents were unmarried - they married 3 years later.

RETURN TO TENTATIVE FAMILY TREE

Family of William John and Maud TRAYES nee THORNE [20w_mt]

William was the son of John and Eliza TRAYES nee SMITH. He signs himself William John TRAYES on the 1911 census and there seems little doubt that he is the William John TRAYES baptised in Christ Church Plymouth in October 1860. His wife is given the christian name Maud on the 1901 and 1911 census returns. The name Maud does not appear on any appropriate marriage register entry for William TRAYES. It seems that Maud may also be otherwise named as Mary Ann and be the Mary Ann THORNE who married William TRAYS in Plymouth in 1884. The place and date of marriage fit as does the death of Mary A TRAYES age 60 in 1926, who is thought to be William's wife or is otherwise accounted for by any other TRAYES families in the area. Examination of these two registration certificates may assist further in identification. So far no death register entry for William John TRAYES has been found. He was definitely alive at the time of the 1911 census but no later reference to him has so far been found.
